I just read something about a training series that said "The average speed will be about 3 miles less than the pace." Do you know what that means? What is the difference between average speed and pace? Is this language specific to this club or common terminology?

That's an interesting observation. "Pace" is what you see when you look at your cycle computer while riding; "average" is miles/hrs for the whole ride, factoring in starts and stops, hills, etc. That explains why I seem to see 18 mph whenever I look at the computer, but only a 15 mph average when I'm done :(.
