Hmm.... so far it has been looking good. I've improved - built muscles, stamina, speed, I can climb a while and can last 100 km these days. It's just going further that scares me a little. 4-5 hours in the saddle are ok, since raising the stem angle I don't get paralyzed fingers anymore. But last time we were going to go significantly over 100 km I chickened out and we took the train home. OK - it was about 34 degrees C.

How to take that next step? perhaps to 140? 160?

I think you'll be surprised at how easy it is to go beyond 100K. What worked for me when I was pushing my distances out was to break it down into small groups in my mind........as in, ok I've ridden 50 so far, 75 is just another 25 and I Know I can ride 25 easy (in my case it's miles but the same applies). I also planned a route that wasn't too far from home but far enough that I had to really think before bailing coz someone was going to have to come get me if I bailed. (does that make sense?) and laugh if you want - but I Told quite a few of my friends what I was doing, knowing they would ask me if I had made it or not......and that was incentive to keep going when I wanted to quit! I had to learn not to listen to the chicken. When was the last time a ride was too far and you really struggled? Tell the chicken to take its baawwking self somewhere else (unless there is some real and rational reason for you to be afraid of more than 100 km). IT's ancient history rearing its ugly head.
To fool the chicken you might have to just not ask the computer how far you are going until you are done, and then you can show the chicken and make the chicken admit it was wrong about you.

the funny thing about riding a bike is that if you get tired, just find somewhere to sit and rest for a little while. It always works for me- 10 minutes off to stretch etc and I'm generally good for at least another 20 miles...
