i know there was a thread going on about using earbuds which made me think of this problem:
went running the other day with the ipod and the next day it froze up on me. i researched how to reset it and it worked fine. though i hear if you run with an ipod it can really mess it up, no matter which one your using (nano, shuffle, whichever). i have a friend that went through 3 different ones and they all broke when he ran.
has anyone else run into this problem? i'm afraid to use it for running, indoors or out. if it is a normal problem is there a good mp3 player to use?

I have a Shuffle and have never had a problem with it while running (inside use only :)). Maybe it is because I am so slow and it doesn't notice the difference between my running and my sitting
I have a Creative Zen 40 GB that I don't use for running b/c it has a moving hard drive inside it rather than the flash memory (no moving parts) my Shuffle has.

HA! This would explain why mine works so well, too!
I've run with my Shuffle since I got it last fall, never had a problem.

I have a mini and run with it regularly. I have never had a problem. Quite honestly, if I couldn't run with it it would be relatively useless to me.

The Nano stays safely at home, but I've been running with my Shuffle for 1-1/2 years without a problem. That Shuffle's been dropped, knocked into walls, stepped upon, nearly swallowed by a lab, left inside hot cars, covered by sand at the beach ... and still works great.

Yep! That has to be the reason for me too. Maybe I should give up running since I hate to anyway.:D

The iPod uses a hard drive, so it's NOT made for running.
The Nano uses a flash drive, so it's made for running. I guess this is why the Shuffle doesn't get messed up why running.
Get a Nano... problem solved.

I don't know, I have a Nano and a Shuffle, and it bugs me that the Nano can't work like the Shuffle. Shuffle: load Podcasts, turn on, and go. It plays them I _think_ in order of newest to oldest. Nano: load with Podcasts. Scroll through the menu to Podcasts, and the particular Podcast you want, and the particular episode you want, then it plays only that one before stopping. I only use it in the car- it's too complicated for the bike. Maybe it's better for just music...Plus, the Shuffle has a great pretty sweat-proof nice small case, and there is no way to practically waterproof the Nano. Yeah, there's the Otterbox, which at least doubles the size of it. Nothing else is anywhere near sweatproof. And try using the controls while doing anything or in bright sunlight. The Shuffle is simple, foolproof, easy to use. I love it.

I never heard that the shuffle shouldn't be run with. It's a whole hard drive vs. flash memory thing. Hard drives aren't meant to be jostled (like when running), but flash memory isn't supposed to have a problem. So the shuffle and nano (and any other digital music player using flash memory) should be fine when running.

My son is a cross country runner. He is a typical teen (careless) and runs with his all the time without any problem, I think everyone on the teen uses them. He has an arm band for his (he has an iPod mini) and runs with it in the heat and humidity with no problem and the band does not slip around his sweaty, skinny arm.

Odd. I've heard that due to the speed of the hard drive's spin, and the sheer size, the later-gen iPods "weren't supposed to have a problem" with running. That said, it might see less abuse if it were in a case around your neck instead of on your arm, just because people tend to move their arms more running...
