snap, he really wasn't all that friendly looking. Nor was he mean looking. He was just very LARGE and IN THE ROAD. We had to stop a moment to let him decide what he wanted to do. Earlier this year I guess a mountain biker got treed by a bull moose up at the top of Millcreek Canyon. They can be Scary Animals at times. No doubt, if you go up against a moose, you will lose!

Anyhoo, that ride (which is one of my regular routes) will now forever be known as the "moose and squirrel" ride because of Mr. Moose and because of the dozens of chipmunks that were darting all over the place.

Yesterday on our ride we rode into Wyoming on a dirt road (on our road bikes...they had put some sort of goo on it that made the surface nearly as good as paved. Better in fact than some paved roads I've been on) and ran into a bull (as in cattle, not moose) in the middle of the road. The conversation was something like this:

M: "I don't see any horns or any baggage. You think it's a bull?"

Y: "Oh, I see horns and baggage."

Riders approach the bull...

M: "So do you ride slow around or past him or whip by?"

Y: "I say we whip by."

M: "If we whip by and you go first, then I'm the one he'll go after."

Y: "OK, let's go slow then."

Slowly we pedal toward the bull, he turns around to get a better look at us, Martha is ahead, and as we are within 15' of him he starts to walk towards us and I say "gogogogogogogo!", which we do, and we safely get past him.

We also saw a cowboy out on his horse tending the herd in the sagebrush. He waved howdy and we waved back. I suspect they don't see many (any?) bike riders out there. And then later on the paved road we got caught behind a smallish cattle drive.

This ride is now known as the "wild west" ride.

funny story about cows. bf was mtb down in mexico and came around a corner and ran SMACK! into a cow.

unfortunately not there to see it, but i can imagin. he was rather beat up.

Yellow- you've got a lot more nerve than I do! Wonder what the moose and the bull were looking at? With helmets on we don't look very human to them, I'm sure! Can't imagine they see many bikes either. ;) ;) ;) ;)

Good idea to give the moose a lot of room. They can strike with their front hooves if they feel threatened. They can move VERY fast.

The bull, too. Geez, I'd just make sure I wasn't surprising either one of them, and then try to sneak past if there was room, or wait it out if not.

I have a friend who tells a story of a guy being treed by a moose on an island and having to wait most of a day for someone else to come along to distract it so he could get back to his boat. At least they can't climb.

i've heard some bad stories of that happening in town and other parts of ak. we don't have any down here, or if one show's up he's really lost.

Be extra careful of bull moose in the fall when they are are in rutt.

Believe it or not, the exotic I've seen lately was a BUNNY RABBIT!!!!!

I can't believe that it's been ten years since I've seen a bunny rabbit. Last year, we saw jack rabbits while we were out exploring one day, but they're not bunnies, so they didn't count!

While in Gros Morne National park in nNfld a few years ago, they have these signs which are pretty self explanatory.

I can assure you this is not a sign seen outside of Nfld...

you just need some caribou instead of moose. they really aren't to bright. not a threat at all.

I read somewhere last week about a woman competing in a tri who hit a bear. She got thrown, the bear ran off. She finished.

New Hampshire was (is?) posting signs on their highways giving the number of moose/vehicle collisions for the year. The numbers were quite large (hundreds) and people died in those accidents frequently. The moose are so tall that the car's front end only hits their legs and the moose's body then hits the windshield. Moose populations have expanded in recent years and dawn/dusk/nighttime road encounters are likely. A very good reason to drive slowly in those area at night.
