View Full Version : Seattle: Planning in advance (for once!)

Quick, take a picture! I'm planning a ride with ADVANCE NOTICE!!!!
(it may never happen again. :D )
Now that the STP is over, and with Danskin looming on the horizon, how 'bout we start planning that giant Seattle area TE ride?
I'm thinking sometime after Aug 20th, maybe on the Sammmamammish trail or the Burke Gilman or Lk Wash Blvd or something else that's kinda central and easy for everyone to get to. How about the wineries?
So, if y'all would like to post up some dates and some places you'd like to ride, we can get this show on the road! (or trail, or whatever)
(how about catching the Edmonds or Mukilteo ferry and riding on Kitsap or on Whidbey?)

Great idea. I have a couple of dates I need to check, and then I will post some dates. We could go to the wineries, or even Red Hook Brewery for lunch, or to Ballard. How many of you ride the Sammamish River Trail from Bothell to Redmond? If you haven't, it's a major treat---unlike the B/G, it's smooth, the river is beautiful, I always see eagles and herons, have seen otters, goldfinches. We could meet somewhere in north Seattle territory on the BG; ride to Marymoor Park; ride to the brewery or to St. Michele after Marymoor. Kitsap or Whidbey would take a little more knowledge-gathering for me.
So back soon with dates...thanks, KY, for getting this started.

Yay - advance notice!
I am definitely interested. Unfortunately, August 20 is the best date I have until mid-Sept. Now that STP is over, my climbing buddies are bugging me to get out, but I'll try to carve out some time once a date is picked.

I'd really like to go, except I had a few questions -
1) I'm not particularly fast. Scratch that, I'm not fast at all, and I'm not a hill-person. How fast do you guys think you'll be going? Probably more importantly, how far do you think this ride might be?
2) What's a TE ride?

Fresh Sushi, TE is team estrogen!
and those rides are all fairly flat.
KnottedYet and I are not real fast riders. Maybe she'll remember what speed we went last time

 Oops. Obviously not the brightest crayon in the box either.
Someone mentionned August 20th, that's would be my best date as well. Count me in!

I think she meant after the 20th -- she's doing the Danskin, which is on that day.
I might be able to come over and go, maybe with my mother in law (we are doing the Danskin together, too), if I'm available. I'll keep watching :)

I think Mimitabby and I went about 12 or 14 mph for the most part. A social TE ride can go whatever speed works for everyone, or if folks really want to go at different speeds we can break up into a couple groups at meet up at strategic locations. (Gateway park in woodinville, etc.)
I like salsa's idea of a ride Bothell to Redmond to the Brewery for lunch. (I've not ridden to the brewery, so Salsa is in charge of that route!! :D ) Red Hook ESB is my all time favorite beer. In fact, I'm drinking one right now!
Yup, Danskin triathlon is on Aug 20th. Colby and I will be rather busy that day....
Edit: more on the idea. We could meet in Bothell if folks wanted a longer route. We could meet folks who wanted a shorter route at Marymoor. Then all of us could ride together out toward the wineries/brewery. (I'm just a little fixated on the beer aspect). There is handy parking at both places, and both are easy to find from major roads.

Dates, you guys: The only dates when we are planning to do organized tandem rides and are therefore OUT are: 8/13, 9/17, and 10/7. Sundays tend to be better than Saturdays for me. And...9/2 and 9/9 are tentative dates for a dye study group I'm in (weavers). So. Any weekend dates but those are wide open right now.

September 3 and 16 are good for me. October 14th or 15th are each good, and are really the best in October, as my next "good" weekend is Oct 28 and 29 when the weather might be more iffy.
I don't think those dates conflict with Salsa's.
Chime in, folks! What dates work for you?

Sept 16 sounds good to me too!
october is 3 months away!

I just joined the forum and would love to join some local folks for a TE Seattle event. September 3 and 16 are my first available dates and they seem to match some others'. Right now it looks like October 15 and 22 would work, also.

So now all we need is a time and a meeting place? I personally would vote
for 9am at Gasworks park; but I am only 1 voice here.

My sorry little buns won't make it from Gasworks to the Red Hook brewery... and there must be beer!
Hey, I could make it from Gasworks to Hales Ales Brewpub! (that's what, 1 mile? 2 miles? hee hee :D )

Ugh - I only have one commitment so far in September and it's on the 16th! That's too bad. Hopefully I will be able to catch you all on the next outing.

Knotted, i don't drink alcoholic beverages so i have no idea where any breweries are except pyramid, which is near my office.
So pick a place, and pick a start place and time; you're sort of the ride leader anyway.

September 16 at 9am works. I'll meet wherever everyone else concurs. Since I live on the Eastside, Marymoor or Bothell are convenient starting points, but I'm sure willing to drive and then ride.

I gotta confer with Salsa, cuz she knows how to get to the wineries/brewery/food.
I'm thinking Bothell (long ride) at 9:00, hook up with shorter ride (at Marymoor) around 10:30 and ride to lunch together.
I'm SLOW. And I do mean SLOW.
Salsa, how far is it from Marymoor to food?
(did I mention I'm lazy, too?)
mimitabby
08-11-2006, 07:03 AM
by Bothell do you mean start near the mall with the bookshop? (third place books?) a lot of us will have to drive to there.
You're not that slow! I think we're going to be a good group.
and there's a Subway shop right IN Marymoor park, I ate there 2 weeks ago.

*snifflesnuff* I don't think there's a single day of the week where I can make a 4hr drive to/from a ride... but maybe if we met up somewhere between Seattle and Portland someday...

It's not far at all from Marymoor to Red Hook Brewery---6-7 miles. Any meeting place at all on the BG/Samm River trail will work for me, so if people have strong preferences, state them strongly, OK? Maybe the easiest way to do it is "It's REALLY inconvenient for me to go to..." wherever. And we'll meet at the place that works best for most people. It's about 13.5 miles from Logboom Park in Kenmore to Marymoor, fyi---not far at all.

Logboom is easy for me.
I just did a search on fun places off Sammamish trail and they include:
" I took a quick break at an upscale cluster of liquor, lodging and dining where the trail intersects Woodinville's Northeast 145th Street. It includes Willows Lodge, a luxury hotel; the venerable Herbfarm restaurant and the more casual Barking Frog bistro; the Columbia Winery, Redhook Brewery and, just to the south, the Chateau Ste. Michelle winery." Seattle PI
The Barking Frog has a great menu--not sure if they would be hospitable towards sweating cyclists though. Redhook has a nice menu too.

I don't know anything about Barking Frog, but we've never been refused service or even had waiters look at us with askance because of being in sweaty bike clothes; and we've gone to a lot of cafes and restaurants with sweat dripping off our faces!

Mmm, herbfarm. In fact, it all sounds good. I need to move back to Seattle... sigh :)

C'mon over the hills, Colby!
Saturday, Sept 16th. We'll be meeting at Logboom at 9:00, proceeding to Marymoor on the bike trail (anyone want to meet us there to have a shorter ride?) and then riding to lunch.
Parking for Logboom is plentiful and varied, some along the roads in the neighborhood near the trail/park, some parking lot at the park, some farther west in the Lake Forest Park shopping center where Third Place Books is.
I've not been to any of those Woodinville area restaurants. Went to Red Hook 20 years ago when it was in Fremont. but that probably doesn't count, eh?
I like inexpensive food. And good beer. (the beer can be expensive, 's ok with me):D
(And I like to ride sweep. Cuz I'm slow anyway.)

I just saw the reminder thread and wanted to comment here, too - I've never ridden with a group and totally want to but am VERY intimidated by club rides. I would love to join you guys but the rear wheel of my bike looks like a Pringle right now.
I think that the October date sounds good too - let's ride then, too! :D
KnottedYet

I putter along at around 12 mph, smelling the roses and admiring the scenery. No heavy-duty club ride here!
If October sounds good, yes, we should ride then, too!
HipGnosis6, ya wanna be in charge of that one? Pick a day, time, place, and destination that appeal to you and put up a thread!

Oooo that sounds like a fun ride. can I come too? I'm not sure how I'd do with a real lunch complete with beer under my belt, though. And the sweat issue...ugh. Maybe I could just munch my reliable little sawdust bars and keep y'all company?

Red Hook has salads---I would never be able to ride after a big meal. And I don't drink either, so...it'll all work out. The sweat thing I don't worry about at all--they get lots of cyclists dropping by for lunch.
Any TE person is welcome on this ride!

if you're not sweating, you're not working. We all sweat, even when it's cold out.
You will be with a bunch of other sweaty bikers.
