View Full Version : Do you find this slimming?

SadieKate

It seems that many of the apparel manufacturers are now using contrasting color thread for the stitching on their shorts (see the link).
http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=17163

Do you find this look flattering? I always thought it accentuated the largest and most unattractive part of me, the part most women try to camouflage a bit. But a couple of guys told me recently that they thought it was slimming.

What do you think?

snapdragen

I think it would depend. If you have a heart shaped butt, the stitching might accentuate it. (everyone shaking their heads....heart shaped butt, wtf is snap talking about?)

I think it's pretty. Terry has a really cool pair with pink stitching. My Sugois have light gray. I like it. _All_ bike shorts are slimming!

I think (sadly) that most manufacturers think women cyclist are all size 2's and have lovely, firm, tight little rears and most do but then there's folks like me. I tried on those PI shorts and well - let's just say it wasn't pretty. Not pretty at all! :(

I noticed stitching like that on AuntieK's shorts in the post about the TT race she did with yellow. I thought they looked very pretty. Slimming? Does it make my gut disappear? That's all I care about! :p

The reason I'm asking is that I seem to have misplaced (not lost because they will show up) a pair of Castelli shorts. The current version has the contrasting stitching. I just don't see that posterior in those shorts, but I love Castelli for the road. Sigh . . .:(

Well, thanks, but just because I look better doesn't mean it looks good! Kind of like comparing muffin tops - no matter what size the roll is, it still is unattractive.

I actually just bought those PI shorts not too long ago. I have large thighs and I think they are slimming from the front, but I think they make my butt look slightly bigger than my all black shorts  . That's ok though because I love the chamois and that's more important to me.

I love the contrasting stiches. As long as they don't go down the front (camel toe) or straight down between the butt cheeks like a g string they're OK with me.

those PI shorts i just happen to order and get the other day. i love them and they fit perfect. make me feel skinny. in the front i feel thinner, but dont know about the back and the stitching. i was more worried about diaper butt then what the stitching looked like. no matter what my butt looks like or what someone else things i like them.

Yep, down the front. But isn't it weird that they put women's shorts on a male manikin? What was their marketing department drinking that day?

Whoever's butt that is, as I said, slimming. I WISH my butt was that little!! Can't you see, everything outside the lines doesn't count??

My worst ever butt shorts (that I sent back) were the Shebeast expensive ones. Because of the way they were pieced together in the back. Talk about square butt...

SadieKate
07-26-2006, 03:19 PM
Isn't that funny? That's my butt and all I see is the stuff outside the lines. The human brain . . . what a quandary.

So if I have a dinner plate with a small circle painted in the middle, I can eat everything outside the line?

Wow, I think I have those PI shorts (not at home to check) and I didn't even think about the contrasted stitching on the back (I did notice on the front). I'm not sure my husband will appreciate me asking if they make me look fat or make my butt look big, though... he gets tired of me asking how I look and just says "you look fine" ;)

I think the stitching make the shorts more flattering. The lines draw the eye's attention up and down, creating an impression of length - ie focussing on shapely legs, not wide butt.

Sk, I have the PI microsensors with the red stitching and feel like a million bucks wearing them. I agree with southernbelle though - I felt the need to buy a red jersey to match them:p

I saw the Castilli donna shorts in all red and about fell over - I thought they were the sexiest shorts I have ever seen but they weren't available in my size and now I can't remember what website I found them on! OH, the tragedy.....

Comment from female coworker "She's pretty thin!"What're you guys snortin' at work? I'm definitely on the saddle-baggy sturdy side. Just have skinny calves (I want yellow's calves).

mtbdarby - I think TE has the Castelli shorts in red. I want them but V says red shorts really make you look fat. Based on the wide variety of opinions from this group, I might have to try them on anyway. Of course, then I'd have to ask hubby those dreaded seven words . . .

I have learned to ask "Do you think these are flattering?" That allows him to answer based on the pant style rather than my weight and doesn't provoke a sigh of exasperation.

My husband never wears shorts -- NEVER -- until I bought him the baggy shorts for his bike. He hates his legs, thinks they are skinny and wimpy.

My gosh -- I love his legs, and have always told him so! If we'd had daughters they would have been Rockettes. We both have long, slender but well-defined legs -- well, until I gained weight. LOL

But he has great well-defined calves and nice thighs, but he thinks they're skinny. He was a skinny little boy and his friends teased him. The most athletic of his friends had big muscled thighs. Thing is, that's great, but I'm not attracted to big muscled thighs!

I finally pointed out to my husband that the most "fit" guy we know wears shorts all the time -- cycles, runs, works out -- and he has scrawny calves. It doesn't stop him from wearing shorts, though.

I don't know that you can really change those insecurities that we carry within us, huh? All I know is I can't wait to get the hubster in tight road shorts. Hubba!

We are always having Skinny Leg contests with my husband! He is an awesome rider and has always had skinny legs. So, do his two sisters. They have great legs! We've even gotten down to measuring guy's legs to see who wins. Mark usually does! But there have been an occasion or two when he has lost!

The colors merge to purple and teal. At around 45 - 50 miles an hour they merge to a kind of ugly blue. I estimate that speed as I've only seen the yucky blue when the bike is in the trainer with no resistance.

I just bought a pair of Hincapie Power shorts (unfortunately, not carried by TE). http://www.hincapiesports.com/details.php?ccode=317&scode=RSH-LPWL02

The shorts have contrasting colored stitching but Bubba said it is actually in a flattering design, much better than the current Castelli YPRO3 shorts or the PI Microsensors. Wow!

Waist is cut the same height as the above two shorts. The Hincapie Performance short has a really high waist and no flat locked seams which gives them two thumbs down from me automatically.

I'll give them a test drive later this week.

I actually prefer shorts with stripes or multiple colors....they are hard to find unless getting a team kit and barely exist in women's models. I think they are generally much more flattering than solid black shorts and being colorful, make one that much more visible on the road....

SadieKate
08-06-2006, 08:42 PM
Another note on the Hincapie Power shorts: if you liked the old Castelli YPRO pad from a couple years ago, this pad is exactly the same size and shape except the v-cut at the back isn't quite as deep. The chamois is just a tad thicker but doesn't seem stiff. The short fabric appears to be the same as the Castelli YPRO short. I'm expecting great things. Wonder if they come in red . . . .
