This Sunday I'll be competing in my first triathlon (a sprint). I have yet to swim in the open / salt water and I don't think I'll have time to get one in before the race. Any advice? Or any advice in general for a newbie? Thanks.

Congrats on getting ready to do your first tri. Since you may not be able to do an open water swim beforehand, then I would just try to start at the back of the pack and "follow the leaders." Get into someone's slipstream and hang on and let them lead you to the finish. Just be sure to sight often so you don't go too far off course.

Remember to simply enjoy the experience and have fun! You can't ever get back your first tri, so stay in the moment and enjoy yourself. I wouldn't worry about time/placement/being first or last. Just go out there and have fun!
Have a great time, and be sure to tell us all about it when you get back!!! :) Good luck!

You got great advice on the swimming part, just remember to have fun!

When I did my first in June, the Danskin, the hills on the bike were killing me! (wouldn't have been because I was on a walmart bike...:o ) As I was struggling up a hill, a woman commented on how beautiful the sunflowers were...and that totally reminded me to have fun and enjoy! It was MUCH better after that!

Good Luck!

They might say something before the start of the swim about how the currents are running. It's important for you to be aware of this because it will affect how you aim for the buoys and the swim exit. So don't miss the pre-race briefing!

Saltwater is great to swim in, though, it's so bouyant! Try not to swallow any, though, it could upset your stomach. Maybe have a bottle of water in transition waiting.

Usually the water is calmest at dawn- hopefully that will be true for your race!
