View Full Version : What's for breakfast?

I hate to eat first thing when I get up. In a perfect world, I'd have some coffee and then eat my first meal about 10. But with workouts, skiing and all that, I have to force myself to eat in the morning. I don't like a big mea, but something that stays with iss good... like a slice of really good WW bread with peanut butter, or leftovers from dinner.

I'm looking for new ideas for morning food.

I'm with you, Irulan, as far as eating breakfast. I don't like to eat right away in the morning, but my schedule doesn't allow a leisurely start most days, so I either eat early, or don'teat at all, which is not a good option! I make myself eat something. I agree with the PB on WW. That's my usual. Or else I will make a bowl of oatmeal w/ raisins. MMmmmmm, good on a cold morning. Yogurt and a WW bagel works. It has to be something quick and easy, preferable with some protein to make it last longer. I'm not very creative here. Hopefully, someone else will have some great ideas!

On early ride/run mornings, always a bit of coffee first! I have to force myself to eat too, for some reason! At work, I'm starving & having b'fast b/wn 7:30-8 am. But anyway, I've used Slimfast, the liquid yogurt stuff w/straw when driving (Dannon Fusion, etc.) and those new-ish chewy Trail Mix bars, they seem to stay pretty well. By Nature Valley, I think. Very 'gorp'-like stuck together w/honey. Even toasted waffles spread w/pb or syrup. Dried fruit.
Leftovers too! I'm glad I'm not the only one who eats leftovers in the a.m. Not imaginative, but kinda quick.

Hi all, what a nice bit of chit chat that goes on here! Saying hello from sunny Melbourne, Australia!

I am a creature of habit in the mornings, 2nd or third thing I do in the morning is eat breakfast. It's always weetbix/muesli, yogurt and cold milk. Can eat exactly the same thing for a year and not think twice about it...am I normal? :D

Try a couple of sausage links with your oatmeal. We usually cook up a package on the weekends and then reheat them in the microwave as needed. Ham or steak is good too. I actually usually have the meat after the oatmeal.

I don't get to eat again until 10:30 - that's when snack time is, and I find a bit of meat in the morning keeps me from being starving.

My favorite breakfast is 2 eggs (poached) with some nice whole grain toast, glass of OJ and a bit of coffee.

if i am in a hurry, i usally make some oatmeal with flax meal and extra wheat germ.

Sometimes when i am bad :D i heat up some left over thai (mmmm)

I'm actually kind of spoiled in the breakfast department. Most mornings Thom cooks up an egg (sunny side), a bit of ham and puts it on a sandwich size English muffin for me.

i'm chronically late in the morning (ten more minutes of sleep, please??) so i eat breakfast at work. hence, portable breakfasts. i make bacon/sausage ahead of time, prep as much as i can the night before (cut onions, wash lettuce, etc), and take 5-10 min in the morning to make it and take it with me. some ideas:

BLTs --very hard to eat on the bus :D and not re-heatable unless you take out the L
frozen waffles --i found no-name whole wheat at my grocery store-mmm!
scrambled eggs on a bagel -- melt cheese on one half under the broiler if you've got time-- yummy
smoothie-- blend a banana, yogurt and frozen fruit and dump in a portable coffe mug. drinkable while driving or bussing.
muffins--they take a half hour to make and are sooo good. there are gazillions of recipes on-line. never buy muffins--they load them with so much fat & sugar it's like dessert
breakfast burrito --scrambled eggs with red/green peppers and onions rolled up in a tortilla
bacon bagel -- no explanation needed, i hope

oooh, this is making me hungry!

hi guys,

talking about food, has anyone tried the South Beach Diet?

I would love to try it but am afraid of not getting enough carbs for energy when riding or spinning. I am just addicted to carbs and need to lose weight.

Any info would help.

Thanks, Kate

I'm also one of those "just 10 more minutes of sleep please" people. But I have to have breakfast because I'm hungry all the time. Kate, I haven't done South Beach but have been on Atkins for about 8 months so I basically just eat eggs every morning. I'll add bacon or maybe a cheese tortilla if I'm extra famished. That diet has been the best thing for me as far as my weight, my energy level, and the fact that I get to eat all the time. Snowmouse, I hope it's not abnormal to eat the same thing every morning because I'm like that too. Lunch is generally 3 or 4 different things sortof rotated. My partner makes dinner so that's where I get my variation. I used to eat a lot of outmeal with different fruits and that was a very tasty and comforting way to start the day. :)

Glad to read a few others eat the same thing for breakfast day in - day out. I'm also in a huge rush in the morning and actually eat my breakfast on the train.

On a weekday I usually have a thick layer of cottage cheese on toast - normally granary bread which I wrap and take to the station. Variations might be cream cheese or marmite.

At weekends when I've got more time poached eggs on toast are a fave or porridge with raisins in the winter before a ride on a Sunday.

Mmm - must go and cook some dinner... :D

I eat my breakfast at work also because I just can't fit it in at home. But I combine Irulan and Annie's breakfast parts. I put some oatmeal in a bowl, add three spoonfuls of peanut butter (gotta have the protein), add the water and microwave. Stir it up when done and it's yummy and sticks for a few hours. Quick and easy and I eat it everyday. And on the weekends, it works for me just before a ride as well. I'm not burping it up like a McDonald's Sausage McMuffin... ;)

Coffee, except for the morning I take my Fosamax. Then I sit staring at the clock for the 30 minutes I have to wait before I can have my coffee. Can't even lie down for those 30 minutes. After the coffee, another coffee and then the rest of my pills. By then its too late to eat anything. Pack my sandwich for lunch, add an apple and start getting my bike out and head to work.

I make a dozen muffins - sometimes more - during the weekend and freeze them. Take a couple out the night before & you have a quick easy breakfast that is portable.

I agree that store bought are horrible. Some have as much fat as a Big Mac! You can use different grains for fiber, add nuts for flavor and vitamin E, raisins for quick energy, protein powder for that extra boost.

I'll have one muffin on the way to work. After I get settled in, I'll have another muffin and a protein drink (soy milk with protein powder). Lasts me until lunch, quick, easy and portable.

That is a great idea, making muffins ahead of time and putting all sorts of good stuff in them..... you may have inspired me to give it a try, Dogmama. Do you use any specific type of protein powder? I really try and make sure I get some protein into me for breakfast. It last so much longer then. I do not care for shakes or proteins drinks, anything like that. Never liked shakes or malts as a kid and still don't, healthy or not. Give me freshly ground, hot coffee in the morning.

I used vanilla flavored protein powder. Met Rx or Keto Slim are both good.

I have never been a breakfast eater, but have to force myself to do so now. If I don't eat something that I should early, I'll eat something I shouldn't later!!!!

Ever tried pancakes w/ peanut butter and syrup? The WW pancakes are really good and get the low sugar syrup and pb, it is great! If I am going to ride that morning, I skip the low sugar and indulge! Talk about energy!

The breakfast burito is a great way to get everything in one package. I brown some spicy sausage (I hate sausage by itself!) and drain the skillet. Beat some eggs w/ a little milk in a bowl and pour over the browned meat and scramble. Just before they're done, add a little shredded cheese and mix in while still over the heat. Put that mixture on a tortilla and "viola!"

Oh, don't forget a mocha latte w/ skim milk and sugar free chocolate syrup..............who could forget that? I have one EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!

There are also lots of low carb muffin and pancake mixes out there. So you can still prepare them ahead of time but get a lot more protein than in regular muffins... even chocoloate! :D

the important part of this whole discussion for me is the protien componet... straight carbs, no matter how hearty just don't stay with me.

This morning I had a bowl of leftovers... rehated taco meat with beans... not so strange I guess.

I'm with you Irulan! Give me eggs every morning and I'm happy. I like the bacon too unless I'm riding or running... it gives me the urps! lol For a change I like pancakes... but they too have to be low carb. It's nice because I eat a ton, never gain weight, and have much more energy for exercising than I ever did before. I should get paid for this kind of advertising! :D

Personally, I think leftovers are the absolute best breakfast. Or TV dinners, I like Lean Cuisine meatloaf. Pie is awesome too, a real country girl habit :p I am so bad about breakfast, in fact I'll go all day without eating and be a mess by evening. So I keep Power Bars in my purse, the original ones that taste like cardboard. They also save me from the "MacDonalds or pass out" jam.
When I do bother to eat breakfast instant oatmeal is a gift of the gods- easy easy. I also like a carton of yoghurt with Grapenuts in it. Since I like to keep a vat of tuna salad in the fridge that's great breakfast, on WW bread. Strangly tasty with coffee...
God I love coffee.

I'm with Miss Liz, coffee is nectar of the gods....

My pre-ride breakfast is a waffle pizza. Whole grain waffle with peanut butter (super crunchy) and a banana sliced on top. Yum

Non ride days - yogurt with some granola in it, and a couple of Morningstar Farms sausages. (No, not a vegetarian, just can't handle regular sausage, bacon either)

hummus on ww bread is another good one.

yes... coffee! and I know how bad it is for you I really do try and cut back sometimes...

Coffee is NOT bad for you. That was a popular idea a few years ago, put about by killjoys. Caffeine is actually a useful, fairly benign substance for a lot of ailments, and somebody did actually do the science and coffee is fine. In moderation. Too much is, well we've all been there :D . Actually it's kind of fun. Now, choclate covered expresso beans, those will get you into trouble.
I'd be more worried about the growth hormones in the milk in my non fat double cap. Scary.

Mmmmm......dark chocolate covered espresso beans!

I agree, coffee, in moderation, is fine. I love stopping halfway through a long ride, getting a latte, then finishing up the ride. Gives me that little bit of energy I need to complete my epic ride. (Right now an epic ride for me is about 15 miles.........gotta get back in shape!!):D

wall.... I"m concerned about several things. Coffee is supposed to enahcene the negative parts of PMS, and contribute to lumpy breast. I've had one benign one removed already. There may be some relationship to coffee and fibroids. The one that got me to cut back was it's relationship to lowgrade residual pain...When I cut back I have much less back and neck pain, (old injuried) that when I am drinking as much as I would like..

as we say, works for me you don't have to agree...

needless to say I havne't quit yet.

I've been told that caffeine also reduces the amount of oxygen your blood can carry........ don't remember quite why this is supposedly true. Just in case, I actually quit drinking coffee for awhile this summer, while in serious training for a loooooooong endurance ride. Figured I could use any help I could get. Honestly, I didn't notice a difference at all. It became more of a commitment thing for me --- "Look! I am not drinking coffee. I must be serious about this ride." Anyway, I went back to drinking coffee in reasonable amounts after the Ride, and I enjoy it immensely! I don't see me quitting again. Its a true pleasure of life for me. (If you want to try something really tasty, NOT when you are going out for a ride, piping hot coffee with a shot of Bailey's Irish Creme....... decadent!)

Hi Irulan,

I too have cut back on my coffee consumption. There was a time I could finish a full pot on my own! I've had the lumpy breast problem too - flunked a couple mamograms. I've been lucky, the cysts have always been benign too. I'd never heard the connection to lowgrade pain, interesting.

missliz

Caffeine and pain? Never heard that one, and find it surprising as caffeine is the oldest trick going for stopping certain types of pain. Cup of coffee and two aspirin/ tylenol will stop a migraine or even slow complex partial seizure dead in it's tracks, not to mention that plenty of women love it for PMS; look on the Midol box. g
Great diuretic.
Maybe you aren't drinking enough Irulan :D :p , more might be what you need.:D LOL

Together? What really goes on in the Bayou? Come on, Lizzy, give us the Hard Copy update!

I think the caffeine answer is - it depends on your physical state. Caffeine makes me jittery, so I have decaf with a touch of caff. But I have IBS, so any kind of coffee irritates that. Pity too, I love coffee and all the good kinds have caffeine. Starbucks Ethiopian is a gift from our Goddess.

Ooooh that is pretty awful! No, I didn't spot an interspecies swinging scene; supposedly there's a bear back there and I'm sure he would have been in the middle of it... :p
New Orleans is a major center for coffee importing and roasting, so we have so many independent coffee shops who roast their own you wouldn't beleive it. Good coffee everywhere, and somebody here makes this onion and chive cream cheese for bagels you just wouldn't beleive- all the coffee houses have it and that's a fabulous breakfast, oniony stuff on a bagel with coffee! Who would of thought they'd be so great together? Not so good for the girlish figure though.

Lizzy

Here is a Yahoo link that just came out about caffeine:

The upshot: It's OK for you, unless it isn't :p

My theory is that there are a lot worse thing to be addicted to... meth, alcohol, cigarettes, coke....

Quick, easy, some protein, some fat, and a good carb fruit.

Kate -

I don't think you should cut out carbs as they tell you to do initially. For me, the rule of thumb is this:

Nothing 'white' - bread, pasta, taters, refined sugars, etc...

Hi Protien - eggs w/ chz for breakfast - as soon as I get up - 3 hrs later it is usually melon w/ cottage cheese (very high in protien) - 3 hours later and it is lunch (chicken, turkey, etc...not a red meat eater) on a salad - 3 hours later apple w/ smuckers natural peanut butter (NO sugar added) - 3 hours later, dinner...again protien with veggies and a salad.

If you are hungry in between, peanuts are always a good snack or carrots...

I used to LIVE on grain carbs - and I don't feel the drain and I don't miss them...

...as a matter of fact - I feel horrible when I eat them now.

High protien and natural carbs from fruit and veggies is my recommendation...

Also, if you want to burn fat - when you start your ride, ease into it and breathe through your nose exclusively for about 20 - 30 minutes, that helps burn fat as opposed to building your heart muscle.

VenusdeVelo

Lv -- I need to ask you about the science behind your statement:

Also, if you want to burn fat - when you start your ride, ease into it and breathe through your nose exclusively for about 20 - 30 minutes, that helps burn fat as opposed to building your heart muscle.

I am not familiar with this at all, I am very familiar with proper diaphragmatic breathing during cycling. But even this is not a mechanism to burn fat, it is a mechanism to increase the volume of oxygen intake per breath (as well as to assist with bringing the heartrate down).

Maybe I misinterpreted your statement...

V -

Regarding the breathing - my trainer, who is a body builder, is the one that told me that -

The philosophy is that the oxygen you do take in goes toward burning fuel - in this case fat - instead of building muscle - in this case, your heart.

I am not sure he has any scientific data to support - but perhaps I will ask him....

Lv
