Well, I took the plunge and FINALLY upgraded my wheels this week. I got my bike back this afternoon and even though I wasn't going to ride today (it IS designated rest day) I HAD to take them for a spin. It was threatening to start pouring any minute, so I waited a bit, and then waited some more and then said enough! Off I went. I did a whopping 7.5 miles around the 'hood but ended up with 900' of climbing.

I purchased the Rolf Elan (http://www.rolfprima.com/products/elan_aero_black.html), after much discussion and debate with the boys at the LBS. I almost got the Aspin (http://www.rolfprima.com/products/aspin.html), but decided to go for it and get the elan. They are super lightweight (which means that they are "normal" weight for me) and are supposed to climb like nobody's business. I had the LBS put the Conti Grand Prix tires on for added comfort.

Long story short: I felt like I was floating. The wheels definitely climb nicely (better than my old ones), but I'll need to take the bike on a longer, steeper climb to make a better assessment. They have been a long time coming. I'm glad I took the leap (even though SadieKate disapproves  ). I still plan on getting wheels built for my new fancy bike (whenever I get it, that is...maybe sometime next year), so that should make her feel better. (Note: she's en route to Bend right now, so maybe she won't find out about the Rolfs for a while...).

And for those of you who know how impoverished I have been for the last several months...I only got these babies because I finally got a real job, starting August 1. :p

Very, very cool, yellow. Amazing that you can climb like that.

What's the new job?

Oh, not a whole new bike. I WISH! Just new wheels...

New bike next year, maybe.

But, but, but....what about the chocolate?

It'll still be right down the street.

On a related note, we had a chocolate tragedy over the weekend. The AC went out and since it was over 100F outside, you can imagine what happened inside...it got up to 98 inside the shop. I don't know how many pounds of candy were destroyed, but it was certainly in the double digits. The ones that survived the ordeal, however, were your favorite, chocolate dipped fudge. It fell a little bit but is otherwise in pretty good shape. I'll try to remember to eat a piece in your honor tomorrow. With nuts, of course.

Your standard transportation planner/environmental review stuff. Keeping the engineers out of trouble, mostly. Same as I used to do before. I worked out a PT deal, though, so I'll still have Mondays off! :)

I am so glad to hear about the new job. There's nothing like a regular income with benefits.

Sorry to hear about the chocolate. I actually had thought about that with the heat -- what will yellow's shop do if the power fails? (Like how it's your shop now?! )
I shudder to think of the mess, not to mention the loss of stock.

Looking forward to your reports of rides on the new wheels! :D L.

Even though I'd miss you all, I'd rather have it the other way around. What's Floyd going to do without me? Even the cheapo Econo Lodge in Klamath Falls had OLN . . . . grrrrrrr.

Anyway, I don't disapprove. I'm just worried they'll be too harsh for petite little you. Sniff, I'm hurt.

So, now we just have to all throw in our 2 cents on your new bike - whether you want it or not.:p

Ack! Caught!

I think the Aspin would have been. Apparently it's a "beefier" wheel, which would translate into a harsher ride for someone like me.

I'll let you know what I think of them after 120 mi on Saturday. If I make it, that is. It's tough trying to find a 120 mile route off the very hot valley floor that doesn't have a bajillion feet of climbing in it.
