I go to the video store and stare at the titles and don't know what to rent. I need some idea's. So what is your favorite move or movies?
I like all Coen brother's movies (raising arizona,Bartin fink,Fargo etc...) I also like Tim Burten's stuff (the artist in me appreciates all the work).

If you're in need of a good cry, I HIGHLY reccommend "Grave of the fireflies" Don't dismiss it cause It's "just a japanese cartoon" It's a really sad tale with beatiful animation and characters that I just fell in love with. It's my ALL TIME favourite movie.
In fact ANYTHING studio Ghibli is WORTH the definatley worth the movie rental fee.
AND if you're in need of a good laugh... then go for KUNG-FU Hustle. BUT only watch it in subtitles. The Written translation is SOOOO much better than the dub.
Can you tell I'm a subtitle buff???
other than that. Anything directed by Baz Lurhman. (Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet, Strictly Ballroom. (Swoon)) or with Ewan McGregor in it.
Whale Rider's an awesome movie too! ^_^

All That Jazz--Bob Fosse's autobiographical movie with spectacular dancing, sets, costumes, and irony to boot.
Tombstone--a really outstanding job on the Doc Halliday/Wyatt Earp story. Val Kilmer as Doc will charm your socks off.
The Abyss--a wonderful sci fi-ish, deep sea movie with Ed Harris. Very cool.

Highlander (the first one, not any of the others)... my fave all-time romance (despite all the head-chopping)
Fight Club... brilliantly written script, though rather violent
Serendipity, Notting Hill - lovely feel-good romances
As Good As It Gets - again, extraordinarily clever lines at times... a bit of reality...
Blade... a vampire movie, but my fave vampire movie - very sexy without the sex
Predator, Terminator, Alien, Matrix - the firsts of all four very good sci-fi. Subsequent sequels sometimes disappointing
Jaws (one of course) - a movie that still stands the test of time.
Hunt for Red October - well scripted, well-filmed.
The Black Stallion - hardly any speech and could be discounted as a kids film but the cinematography on this is just awesome
I love movies, I'm sure I'll return to this thread :)

Yes, yes, yes... good choices Salsa
All That Jazz has two most excellent dance/songs in it...
Tombstone has - Val Kilmer - need I say more?
The Abyss - a really nice spin on sci-fi - worth watching

My top 10:
The Blues Brothers
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Lost in Translation
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Office Space
Napoleon Dynamite (though I hated it initially)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Life is Beautiful (In Italian, not dubbed in English)
Casablanca
Moulin Rouge
I know there are many great films but Hotel Rwanda and Million dollar baby by Clint Eastwood have had the biggest effect on me. Last year I saw Million dollar baby and I thought "This is definitely film of the year" and the week later I saw Hotel Rwanda and it is even better cause it's made by true event.
Advice: prepare many tissues, you'll need it

The Muppet Movie - the first and original from the 1970's. The later ones don't count
Amelie - a feel-good movie, but then most of my favorites are
Men In Black 1 and 2 - Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones....
Sweet Home Alabama - awwwww, cute
Twister - I know scientists like these!
Contact - Carl Sagan and Jodie Foster, how can you go wrong?
Tomb Raider - but not the 2nd one. It sucked.
there are so many movies I've missed because i just don't go to movies and can never remember what I wanted to see when I go to the video store. And I don't go to the video store often enough. I'll have to write some down from this thread. Thanks!

Movies..
Chungking express

I second Chungking Express, or for that matter, pretty much any other Wong Kar Wai movie (Ashes of Time, etc.). The connections between soundtrack and cinematography in those movies are pretty remarkable.
"Big Fish" is one of my favorite movies, as is "Lost and Found" (from HK - it is half in english and half in cantonese.)
For the weirdest movie ever (in my book) - Killer Klowns from Outer Space.

How funny you should mention killer klowns, that is a wierd one. But for me the strangest is a movie called "The Dark backward" Bill Paxton and Robert Downy Jr it was... like my husband said you need to know where the bottom is.. very twisted!

I love Japanese Anime! Truth be told at 38 years I still love Cartoons. "Spirited Away" was wonderful. And the Triplets of Bellevue I liked a lot as well even though it was odd. I just saw one not to long ago caleed something castle can't remember the whole name. Moving castle? Anyway it was good. I am going to check out some of these recommendations here, keep em coming!

Well, this list could be rather long. I will try to be short:
The God Father - this one will aways stay the favorit
Scent of a Woman
Seven year in Tibet
The Wedding singer (it's just funny)
Must Love Dogs (my recent pick)
(HEy ifka,
If you liked hotel rwanda, look at picking up a copy of retired General Romeo Dallaire's "shake hands with the devil"-a great read however i'm not sure if it's been transalated into Croatian)

I've tried to find it on internet pages but there is no croatian translation for the title of the film so I think it's not translated. Maybe I'll have better luck in video stores. Thanx, anyway :)
I'm with light saber - anything Studio Ghibli is worth watching - my favorite is Princess Mononoke - it is stunningly beautiful, but beware though it is animated it is quite violent. I love the fact that ideas of good/ evil are very blurry in the movie.
Other greats IMHO:
The Shawshank Redemption - one of the best movies ever!
Seven - Caution - extremely disturbing and violent.
Delicatessan - French, but so good you'll forget you had to read the subtitiles
Caro Diario - Italian, slow moving, rambling but strangely compelling - great music.
Jean de Florette / Manon of the Spring - French, 2 wonderful movies
Raise the Red Lantern - Chinese
maybe not great but really entertaining:
Office Space
Enchanted April - this movie is really sweet - not my normal thing, but for some reason I quite liked it.
Mystery Men - good super hero spoof
Ringu (the ring the original Japenese version - I haven't seen the US remake) - very scary in a suspense-not-gross and gory way.
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Hero - even if you don't like martial arts movies this is eye candy to the extreme -it was so beautiful just to watch - plus I quite liked the story line.
given time to think I'm sure I could think of more..

Shane (We have battered down words that might have been spoken...)
Sunday Bloody Sunday (But something... we were something)
Chariots of Fire (But [God ] also made me fast - edited to avoid masc pronoun for God)
The film at Te Papa (and not just for the Sibelius - one for the kiwi's)

Ah... we just have excellent taste... :p what can I say?
Can I add in... Witches of Eastwick (a bit of wicked fun)
How did I leave the Shawshank Redemption and Mystery Men... or Scent of a Woman and the Wedding Singer off my list? Excellent calls, Eden and Lenusik.
Napolean Dynamite - I didn't know quite what to make of that movie Newbie... would I watch it again? - yup. could I tell anyone what it is about? - prolly not!

Recent Comedy:
Hitch - don't miss the dance scene at the end. So funny!!
Wedding Crashers
Something's Gotta Give
Still funny after all these years:
Blast From the Past - Sissy Spacek and Christopher Walken
My Cousin Vinny - Whatever happened to Marisa Tomei? She's fabulous in this.
Mrs. Doubtfire - Williams was so funny
Charlie's Angels 1 & 2 - I don't know why I like these movies, they just make me laugh
Groundhog Day
Moonstruck - great cast. Cher missed her calling as a singer :)
Working Girls
Drama, sci-fi, & epic stories
Million Dollar Baby
Erin Brokovich
Shawshank Redemption - my favorite, still
Goodfellas - good story and great music
Pulp Fiction
Fargo - is this comedy or drama??
Se7en (Really, anything Morgan Freeman is in)
Aliens (or maybe I just like the chin-up scene...)
The Italian Job
The Abyss
Walk the Line
Oceans 11
Minority Report - if you can stand Tom Cruise
The Firm - ditto on Tom Cruise, but the rest of the cast is good
Pearl Harbor - clearly a "guilty pleasure" thing on my part
Dances with Wolves - I still watch this once in a while, and cry my eyes out.

The Age of Innocence. (I'm an Edith Wharton fan---this story has special meaning to me, and I think the movie really did the book proud).
Agnes Brown.
The Pianist.
Evelyn (I think that's what it's called --- Pierce Brosnan is in it, and it's set in Ireland).
Meet the Parents.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High---one reason: Jeff Spigoli (Sean Penn)--awwwwlright! Takes me back to the day, as does "Valley Girl," "Pretty in Pink," etc.

Not in any particular order, and I'll probably come back with more suggestions:
Anything with Edward Norton in it ,except "Everyone Says I Love You" - he's not in it enough and it's a corny, Woody Allen musical (nothing against Woody Allen, I just don't think musicals are his forte)
Boondock Saints
Dogtown & Z-Boys - okay, I skated for a while, but even without that in my past, this is a great documentary with some awesome pre-Tony Hawk skateboard footage
Dogma (actually, most Kevin Smith movies, pre-Jersey Girl)
Ghost World
The Usual Suspects
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas - the real Hunter makes a cameo!
Orange County
Repo Man
Dr. Strangelove
Bad Santa (also by the director of Ghost World)
Being John Malkovich - just when you think it can't get weirder, it will

Horse Whisperer
Unfinished Life

I have another to add...
"Millions"
Duck on Wheels
07-06-2006, 04:27 PM
Lots of my favorites already listed. A few I would add, though some might not be readily available:
The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!
Time Bandits
The Stone Years
Schindler's List
Oh, and why can't I remember the title about the Irish girl expecting a baby out of wedlock. Was it The Nipper? The same director also did one about that same family trying to run a fish-and-chip wagon. And he did The Commitments. Anyway, any of his. They're all great!

The Usual Suspects
The Eight Day - an incredibly sweet, moving French flick - a must see.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Anything with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks
Fargo
Breaking Away (come on!)
Casablanca

Lessee, hope I won't repeat anything already posted. I don't know that these are my *favorites* (so hard to pick favorites) but they're good, and I'll try to pick a few lesser known ones
Avalon
Shawshank Redemption
Contact
Green Mile
Gattaca
Better Off Dead (funny, campy 80s flick)
The Sixth Sense
12 Monkeys
The Bone Collector
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story
Another suggestion...catch TV shows you've never seen. I do NetFlix, and that accounts for alot of my rentals. I catch a lot of great HBO shows, since I don't have HBO (Sex and the City, Six Feet Under---great show, probably had the best finale of any TV show EVER, and currently getting into Sopranos) and just other shows I missed. It's a great time saver to watch DVDs and save yourself commercials. You're also very tuned into the plot because you can get a month's worth of episodes on one disc in a few hours (or workouts, if you're watching from your trainer),
