Healdsburg, July 15th - who's going?

Who'll be riding the Healdsburg Harvest ride on July 15 ?

So far as I know, there's Lee & I, Tracy (tprevost) and her friend Nancie, and Snap.

I am SO looking forward to this ride (not, however, the drive up!). It is probably my favorite of all time. :D We are only doing the 37 miler as Nancie has not been riding as much this year; but we do plan on stopping at some wineries and shops etc. Saturday afternoon before heading 'onward' early Sunday am.

It should be a good ride - so far it seems the weather has been hovering at the low 80 range - perfect!!! YEAH!!! Happy happy happy!!!

I'm horribly out of shape, and will probably die on the slightest hill. I've promised myself a tamale from the Healdsburg Farmers Market - there's my incentive!

Leebob and I braved the traffic from the East Bay up to Santa Rosa on Friday afternoon and we arrived at the Holiday Inn Express just as Snap was checking in. Then after we checked in, we drove around to the rear lot of the hotel and there was Tracy waving at us (she recognized us from our photos). Tracy had arrived earlier and was just returning from a 20 mile ride, and her friend Nancie had just arrived from Klamath Falls, Or.

We freshened up and headed off for dinner at a nice little Italian restaurant Lee & I had previously discovered in downtown Santa Rosa. We had lots of good food and great conversation.

Santa Rosa (home of the late Charles Schultz) downtown has lots of statues of Charlie Brown & other Peanuts characters decorated by local artists. Here we are posed by one near the restaurant, which just happens to be located in Historic Railroad Square:

I was worried about the heat and wanted to get on the road as early as possible, so Lee and I arrived right when registration opened up a bit after 6, so check-in was an absolute breeze, and we were on the road by about 6:30. It was cold and foggy at the start, and my teeth were chattering for the first few miles. I wished I brought a vest along with my bolero, but I thawed out soon enough.

As it turned out, it never actually got hot, and I even kept my bolero on for the first 30 miles or so. Maybe the little spritzer bottle of water I carried in my jersey pocket is an anti-heat charm, as long as I carry it I won’t need it!

The other thing I was a little worried about (besides the heat that never materialized) was whether I’d have a repeat of what I guess was an asthma attack I had the last time I rode up in Wine Country. Lee & had gone on a ride with SK & Bubba and aka_kim a few weeks ago starting from St. Helena, and at the top of a climb I suddenly couldn’t breathe, it was as if my throat had closed up. Since nothing remotely like this had ever happened to me, I was terrified, which of course made it worse. I calmed down and started breathing OK after a bit, and best I could figure I had a reaction to some sort of pollen out there.

At any rate, early on in the ride this morning we were going up a small climb and I started to get that same tight feeling in the back of my throat and started wheezing a little bit. I slowed down, tried to relax, and concentrated on breathing evenly. It went away soon enough, and I was fine for the rest of the ride. There’s definitely something in the air up there this time of year (from June onward, at least) that gives me the wheezes.

This ride went over many of the same roads as the Wine Country metric back in early May, but by & large in the opposite direction. Great route. The roads got a bit bumpier and narrower once the 60 mile route split off from the 37 mile route and headed south of Healdsburg towards Windsor & Santa Rosa, but there was very little car traffic so it was fine. Much of the route was shaded, and there was a light breeze in the mid-to-late morning so the ride was very pleasant. There were lots of rollers but no big climbs. I didn't take any pictures this time around, but Tracy said she took some photos.

They did a great job of marking the route on the road. The markings for turns were placed well enough in advance so we never had to make a mad scramble for a left turn, and there were numerous “straight ahead” markings so I never wondered if I was off the route.

We all met up again after the ride was over, and Audrey from Placerville (live2bike on bikejournal), who rode the last five miles or so with me & Lee, also joined us. There was a delicous lunch after the ride, with genrous servings of a very tasty garlic pizza (yum) and a variety of salads, topped off with ice cream cups from Cloverdale Creamery. We had a great time hanging out on the lawn of Headsburg High School, chatting and scarfing up our well-earned lunch.

Lee and I headed home after that, but Tracy and nancie and Snap stayed another day in Santa Rosa so maybe we’ll hear about their further adventures when they return.

This was a great ride, well organized, excellent route, and we definitely plan to do it again next year. According to the route sheet, next year’s ride is scheduled for Saturday July 21 so mark your calendars!

Initially T and N convinced me to do the 37 mile route. I thought about it for a bit and changed my mind. I knew there was one hill I was not prepared for; I decided the flat 25 miles would suit my out of shape body. I was in for a surprise.

I rode for a bit, and then the first hill. Not a big one, but when you've not been riding, anything is a mountain. I took a short break halfway up to catch my breath.

Continuing on, there were a few more hills, the worst was Lytton Springs, about 3-5% (one chevron in slinke-speak) Not horrible, but enough to let me know I need to ride more.

I got a sudden craving for a Coke - unusual for me, I rarely drink the stuff. So I stopped at the Dry Creek General Store.

Tracy, Nancie and I went to a couple of wineries, then had dinner together that evening. They have now witnessed the Lemon Drop in real life. I was so tired, I fell asleep watching Pirates of the Caribbean. Couldn't even stay awake for the delicious Johnny Depp:p

I had a great time, meeting new/old friends and sharing a beautiful day.

edit: I almost forgot! As I was heading down Dry Creek Rd (I think) I hear from behind: "Amici Veloci my a$$!" And a woman rides up beside me "My friend told me if I saw that jersey I was supposed to say that!" It was a friend of sadiekate's friend Marty! AV shall rule the world!

Thanks for the photos, snap ! (oops, and Tracy too!)

The sky was really beautiful, bright blue with puffy clouds. At one point we passed by a pasture full of blue cornflowers with some black & white cows (Holsteins?) standing on the top of a hill, with the blue sky and white puffy clouds as a backdrop. I rode by gazing at that beautiful scene, and afterwards it occurred to me I should have taken a picure of it, but I didn't feel like turning around and going back. My bad.

It was a fabulous ride... although, they changed the beginning of the route because of a bridge that had been washed out... I was really bummed because those are some of the most beautiful roads.... maybe they'll be back next year!

Wow! These pictures are beautiful. I am a fairly new transplant (from PA) to California so I love seeing everyone's ride pictures from different places around this state-- so many places I want to see in person. It looks like you had a great day!

OMG!! You guys have transported me home!! These roads are my old stomping grounds. One thing I don't miss is that danged FOG!! I HATE fog!! Give me HEAT HEAT HEAT!!!!
You guys were lucky to have no traffic. I remember many times nearly being run down by half drunk "wine tasters". But I did have more than a few FAVE routes outside of Healdsburg. BTW- if you are ever in Healdsburg again you MUST stop by the costeaux french bakery!! CARB HEAVEN I tell you!!
Oh- and in Windsor- Langleys on the green is FABULOUS for a nice dinner!! They have this chocolate macadamia crunch cake that I have dreams about!! :)

I did a beautiful 20 miler Friday on the north end of Santa Rosa, and through the south end of Windsor... couldn't believe how bicycle friendly the roads were... every driver gave me tons of room and in the cases where they had to wait a bit to pass, were very patient... I was LOVING life!!! I kept trying to tell Jobob and Snap (and anyone else, for that matter) that they needed to do that loop! I know you love AZ but I'd move up to Sonoma County in a Nanosecond if Adam would go! :rolleyes:

It was on the west side so easy access to Healdsburg.
I grew up in Sebastopol, and pretty much lived there all my life. Save my 1 year stint as a nanny in NY.
I guess I took the area for granted, but I just didn't care for the weather. Some call it "mild", I call it COLD!!
It's also very expensive, and the traffic is hell. Spend some time on the only artery in the area- the 101 and you'll soon see what I mean.
yeah it's nice, but there are some pretty hefty strings too!

Yeah, I know what you mean about the 'strings'; its the same in most nice places... I guess you just have to choose the 'strings' that you are willing to live with :rolleyes: Santa Cruz is pretty much the same as far as the one main road (Hwy 1) so I know exactly what you're talking about on 101! ... although I was planning on hitting the lotto first so I never had to be on 101 during commute hours :p
