Hi everyone,

Great site I stumbled across while researching bikes! I'm a very casual rider looking to get a bike to ride along with my family and maybe even start using it for exercise on my own as well.

I'm looking at Trek Bikes...either a 4300WSD or a 7.2FX WSD. I know the 4300 is a mountain bike setup and the 7.2FX is a fitness bike and I understand the differences in gearing ratios, wheel/tire size, etc. What I was looking for is something that is comfortable (I think the WSD setups will go a long way towards that), has me sitting a bit more upright (again, WSD helps there) and is just plain fun to ride.

I'm also looking at Specialized for any WSD type rigs as my husband has a Specialized Rockhopper and really likes that bike.

Does anyone have personal experience with either of the Trek WSD bikes or a similar Specialized that can share their experiences and shed light on the matter for me? All help is very much appreciated!

Welcome to TE! We're happy to see you! Search around here for threads on hybrids and such - there's tons of discussion about them.

I started out with a Trek 7.2FX. I love it for taking the kids in the trailer and just toodling around town. I used it for exercise purposes for about a year until I bought a roadbike. It works great for that, too! You may or may not need WSD, depending on how you are shaped. The only way to know is to go to the LBS and test ride some bikes. Good luck and ask us as many questions as you have :)

Test ride, test ride :-) THat's the only way to know what's going to work for you. Of course, adjustments can make a big difference, too. I have a 7500 FX that I got from fall 2001 and I like it being upright (and I was running out of gears on the flatlands here on my other hybrid, adn this helped) - but it's still not as comfy as my original hybrid.

I ended up placing a small deposit on a Trek 7.2FX WSD. I look forward to getting out on the bike and having some fun!

I'll let you know my impressions once I get it. I'm really not sure when it will be in. Seems that we're in between model years and it may be a few weeks or so before the bike is available...

So I got a call from the LBS today, my hunch which I mentioned above is happening. They are "out of stock" and I should come in a look for a different bike.

Well I'm not in a rush and I'll just wait the month (I'm guessing and he didn't say on the message) for them to come in. I think it's the between model years issue...we'll see...
