I keep reading about people with spin bikes and going to spinning classes. I'm pretty sure you are not making yarn or thread, so what is this, really?

A kind of stationary bike - most often seen in gyms/athletic clubs where group classes are taught. Some of us have our own spin bike at home, they make lovely laundry holders......

Thanks! Yeah, if I had one, I'm afraid that's what would happen. Nice coat rack etc. :D

But at least they're outside.

Do people take their own pedals?

Do people take their own pedals?

The Spinning bikes at my gym have LOOK pedals on one side and SPD pedals on the other side. They also have toe cages that clip onto the LOOK side for those people who don't have cycling shoes.

As for Spinning being fun...I absolutely love it and it was the gateway to outdoor cycling for me. The classes are usually a lot of fun, depending on the instructor and their choice of music/profiles of course. With three little kids I can't get outside to ride as often as I like, but with 2 hour childcare at the gym, a Spinning class is a good alternative for me. :)

That bike looks kind of strange to me! :)
Here's a picture of the bikes in our gym:
