Over the past 3 years I have had numerous overuse injuries and strength imbalances with my body. Knee, achilles tendon, and my neck/upper back TWICE! Some friends suggested that I try taking yoga. I tried yoga in the past and wasn't too into it, but if it will help me build strength/stability in those hard to find places, I am ready to give it another shot. There is a school in my town, however, I can't alter my schedule to fit until late July, so in the meantime, I thought I would buy a DVD. Any suggestions? I don't know anything about yoga!

These look interesting to me, but I need advice from someone who knows. Thanks!

I have Yoga for Cyclists with Andria Baldovin. I really like it. She has 2 sessions on the DVD--one for days when you ride and one for days when you don't. I ordered it from Velo Gear. I don't have the website handy, but you can find it easily.

Good luck........

Sarah Ivanhoe's DVDs are good for beginners.

I have the Yoga for Cyclists and like it. However, it took some me some time to get used to the instructor's North Carolina accent :D

Yoga is a great idea...

I swear by the Yoga Zone series and have 3 DVDs that I use frequently:
- Introduction to Yoga,
- Flexibility and Tone, and
- Conditioning and Stress Release

All three are lead by Alan Finger (he's a phenominal instructor) and have 2 women doing the poses: one woman demonstrates the ideal form and one does the poses in a modified form for those of us who are less flexible.

While all three are rated 'beginner', they're still challenging after using them 1-3 times a week about 2 years now. Each DVD is significantly different so you get a different result with each. They're pretty well known, so you'll find them on amazon and in your local Borders or Barnes & Noble...

Hope this helps!

I've been doing yoga (classes and/or DVDs) for about 5 years and I have found I get alot of improvement in my cycling, as well as freedom from aches and pains when I practice regularly. (Off season I try to do yoga 2x/week).

For a beginner to understand moves -- basic yoga, I would recommend Ali McGraw's DVD (it is with a "famous" yogi who teaches it). It's very gentle, but moves quickly. It's a great all around DVD. This DVD is primarily "hatha yoga" - what you typically think of -- the relaxing stetching moves which focus on breathing and body discipline.

I'd also suggest Rodney Yee's DVDs -- he has yoga for athletes DVDs -- he is a very good teacher I think, I like his style. And then Graeme Street, who is a cyclist, has DVDs (Cycle-Core and Cyclo-Zen) that specifically focus on yoga for core strength of the cyclist. These are DVDs with stretching yoga moves, power yoga (very challenging!!) and also spinning on your bike on your trainer workouts. I liked his DVDs alot, but the spinning parts get a little boring (prefer Spinervals). But his power yoga routines are great. These are really designed to make you stronger as a cyclist. He is at www.cyclo-core.com. Street's yoga is power yoga, closer to "astanga" or "vinyasa" yoga -- it will make you sweat!

Have fun with it, I really enjoy trying to incorporate yoga into my routines, even if it's just using some of the poses for some quick stretching -- all cyclists should memorize the downward dog, pigeon pose, warrior pose, etc. as they help stretch the muscles that are so specific to cycling.

Also see attached sheet on yoga poses for cyclists...they are all yoga poses.

I have Gaiam's AM/PM for Beginners DVD. The AM workout is with Rodney Yee, the PM with Patricia Walden. Both are 20 to 30 minutes and end with meditation. The workouts are easy to slip into a busy day, and I feel much more flexible after a couple weeks.

Sorry, this is probably a little late to reply.... I actually bought Combination Pilates & Yoga dvd couple of months ago. I bought it to strengthen my core and gain balance. I really like it, it's not boring even and goes by very quickly. I am already looking to buy something more advanced as my next dvd, but i do recommend it if you are just starting out with yoga

Sorry, it's the one that was posted by kaian in her thread. I like it, in fact I just did it yesterday. There is an introduction on dvd explaining breathing, body positioning , etc. It's easy to remember in case you want to do it while watching tv.

Hi!

You might want to check into www.beachbody.com . They have exercise programs, including Yoga booty ballet.

I will check out Rodney Yee's DVDs (as mentioned earlier in this thread). I need to work on my shoulder strengthening - hopefully, yoga will be just perfect for it :) !

Have a great day!
