Duck on Wheels

Now that I have a brand new bike, and am also about to leave Wisconsin, somebody suggested that I need a new screen name. I replied with an offer of 5 bags of sport beans to whoever comes up with the winning suggestion for my new name. Thought I'd better get that offer out from where it was hidden down in page 2 of another thread. So here it is:
RULES: Enter as often as you like.
JUDGE: Me, but I may put up some finalists for a vote.
DEADLINE: Initial suggestions should be in this thread by June 15. That gives another week for the judge to select finalists for the runoff vote before I leave WI.
PRIZE: 5 small bags of sport beans -- mix of flavours or choose your favorites.
ELIGIBLE: everybody, including myself. But if I win, then the runner-up gets the sport beans.
some HELPFUL HINTS: I have a nickname "Duck" which is a pun on my real name pronounced in Norwegian. I'm old and slow. I have two red bikes, both Treks. Also a red car, red house, red-haired daughter (son too, though his red is just highlights in the brown), red-diaper background, work as a professor. ... That should give folks enough to play around with.

My first thought is:

Road Island Red or

Rode Island Red

either works for biking

Shouldn't a person who suggested to you to change name get a prize for creativity? :D

NorTred (Norway + Trek + Red)

or alternate capitalization = NortRed

How about... "duck in red" or "trekkin' red duck" or "red red red" or ...nope - that's all I have for now. I'll have to think about this some more. This is fun :)

God morgen!

How 'bout "Rod Het" or play with puns in two languages and be "Hot Rod"

Or play with rod/road: "Road Duck" "Road Trek" "Road Sykkel"

Or there's "Rude Duck" which sounds like it could be lots of fun.

"Dr. Duck" "Tungnem Trek" "Langsom Duck" (playing off "Lonesome Dove"... sorry, I'm really reaching here...)

ROFL. :D :D :D
As judge, I think I'll disallow Tungnem Trek. I may be slow on the road, but I'm not senile ... yet.

Rod Het, on the other hand ... Are you thinking of playing Red Hot and Hot Rod up against Rødhette (that's Little Red Riding Hood in Norwegian)? Nice try. Could become a finalist, though the best puns don't need explanation.

I've been considering Red Hot Mamma, but it's a bit much to live up to.

red duck ridin' as in "dead man walkin'"? A bit ominous, but I do like it. It goes on the semifinalist list I've started. I think I'm up to 20 now, but there's still plenty of room for more. Glad to be of entertainment to y'all ... especially when that doesn't entail taking a pratfall at a ride. :)

(I have 6 DD magnets on my fridge, and a bigger squeaky one on my bookcase, but I'll send y'all brand spankin' new ones!)

Heck, I could ride the Burke Gilman trail to Archie McPhee's to buy them, then ride to the post office and send 'em. A bike experience!

Thank you for the thought, but I have enough rubber duckies as it is. I had one in my bathroom so my mother-in-law thought it was a theme and ran with it. Now I have several soaps with a duckies in them, towels with duckies on them, a picture of a duckie, 2 rubber duckies, a majolica ceramic duck. In fact I live in Seattle too and one of my rubber duckies is a Devil Duckie (he's a yellow one though) - which is what made me think of them.

There seem to be no more contest entries today, so maybe we should go ahead with the final round ...? I have selected a list of 10 finalists, unless somebody has a last minute entry. We could have one election day, but I warn you ... I get to stuff the ballot box at the end of the day. ;)

Duck on Wheels
06-09-2006, 07:52 AM
OK, here in no particular order are my picks as finalists. As you can see, duck and red are the main themes, but the bike name has been an inspiration for some, and my living near H..., Norway is reflected in a few. I've left out some that others had as favorites. RubySlipperz is the bike's name. It's a better bike than I am a biker, so I feel its name shouldn't be mine. And I've been DocDuck on other fora after getting the degree -- a good nickname, but I've been there, been called that.

Some of these may need tweeking, but if it's your favorite and you see a way to tweek it to the better, feel free to offer your version. Comments or reasoning for choices also welcome.

__ Rubyducky (TsPoet)
__ Dorothy (danyla)
__ Uff duck (mtkitchn)

__ Quackered (fishdr)
__ Ferruginous (zoological name of endangered red duck species, Betagirl)
__ Hellenback (Trek420)
__ DuckOutaH… or, Duck on Wheels (me, inspired by Trek420’s Hellenback)

I haven't found a button anywhere that lets me set this up for automatic tallying, so we're getting hand-counted ballots here. I'll tally them up and then stuff my ballots in for the final count Saturday afternoon.

SadieKate

Bikeless, to post a real poll you need to start a new thread. Waaaay down at the bottom is the option to "post a poll." However, you have a maxium of 10 options, but you can allow people to vote for as many names as they wish.

To go this route, you'd have to eliminate 1 from your list.

So...if a name was created after inspiration from someone else's suggestion, and that name wins, does the someone else get 1 pack? Hee hee ;) :p

Duck on Wheels
06-09-2006, 11:12 AM
Mmm, yes. I think fishdr's point was a "what if". What if the winner was "inspired by" and yet said source of inspiration is not the first eligible runner-up. I think in that case a bag or two goes to the source of inspiration, in addition to the main prize to the first eligible runner-up.

OK. The polls are closed. I'm gonna throw in my sneaky extra ballots now and declare some winners:
1) The popular vote winner is Quackered. 5 bags to fishdr for that one. Buuuut ... as I read it, it rhymes with knackered, which is kinda de-motivating.
2) My favorite before the voting was Ferruginous. A tough little species on the rebound from near extinction. Maybe the iron in its name gave it that resilience. But I guess it's too subtle and serious for a screen name, since only Betagirl and I voted for it, so I'll go with another one. But 1 bag to Betagirl for coming up with my favorite.
3) 1 bag also to second runner up TsPoet for RubyDucky -- an excellent pun on rubber ducky, and a catchy rhythm to the name. But as some have pointed out, I'm already stretching it by giving my Trek the name Ruby.
4) No bags to the winners (Trek420 and myself), although I do have a Madison memento for Trek420 when I see her in a couple of weeks. I've decided to call myself Duck on Wheels. I think the imagry is suitably incongruous and clumsy, and yet here I am actually riding. So the name is at the same time self-deprecating and encouraging. And it plays subtly on dh's home town, but without insulting believers amongst us and without promising too much. We'll see when I get home if I can actually make it to Hellenback. I know I can do the distance, but can I do the hills?!?

Sooo ... fishdr, Betagirl and TsPoet, if you pm me your addresses and state your flavor preferences, I'll get your beans in the mail pdq.

Now to find out how to change my screen name ...

I tried the green ones (lemon/lime) today. Very tasty. Can't really say whether they powered me up, but I guess they work the same as any sugar/salt/potassium tablet would do, consumed together with water. Or like eating Gatorade or cytomax powder and drinking the water separately -- only not so messy :) .

I happen to have two packets of orange left. Guy in the store said they taste like orange creamsicles. Does that sound tempting, or would you rather have blueberry, or lemon/lime, or tropical fruit punch flavor? I need to get some more anyway and can hit the store tomorrow.
