View Full Version : Sat am - East Bay Hills?

I'm contemplating doing some hills this Saturday morning - looks like it won't be too too hot...
I thought I'd go up Old Tunnel Rd, Skyline along to Redwood, then back up Pinehurst. It's basically the hilly part of the 30 mile Bike Against the Odds route (minus the slog through downtown Oakland). Maybe 20 miles, but a decent amount of climbing.
If anyone wants to ride with me, we could meet at Temescal Park. Starting reasonably early would be great (8-ish?)
By now everyone here knows what my uphill pace is like (exceedingly slow! :o ) so I generally don't end up riding "with" anyone up hills... but it's a pretty nice route when the weather is good.
Any takers?
(Winddance? We'd start right out with your favoritie: "Asthma Hill"!)

Hmmm. I won't have my road bike on Saturday, but if it's not too speedy a group I'd like to tag along on my mountain bike.

Hi Kim - well so far the group is me, so it's safe to say it's not speedy!

Would it be okay if I join you? I'd also like to bring my friend (she isn't on the forum...yet). We're both interested in doing BATO, but really have no clue about how hard those hills are going to be. I'd likely bring my mtb as the lowest gearing on my fuji is 38-26 and I stink at climbing. We can meet at 8am. We would be coming from SF. Thanks in advance I hope :)

Absolutely - that would be great! The more the merrier! I think Winddance (Lisa) will be coming too.
I really want to re-state for the record that I am very slow up hills - I mean like 3.5-4.5 mph...
I'll make up a little route map so no one gets lost! And I guess I'll be a de facto sweep!

Cool, thanks! It will be fun to get to meet you. Is there just one parking lot at Temescal park?
My pace up the hill to my house, which is 12-15% grade for a little over 1/2 mi. is about 3.5mph or so. I can actually make it up that hill on my MTB now. Just did it for the first time without stopping on Sun. In short, you won't be riding alone - you'll be leading me!
edit:
looked at the map for temescal and it looks like there is just one lot. no chance of me getting lost.

This will be fun!
(Actually - there ARE 2 parking lots at Temescal, but I think we should meet at the larger one - the North lot - which is just off Broadway and adjacent to 24 (not the smaller lot which is just off Broadway Terrace and next to Hwy 13.)
And SK - ha-ha! Thanks for the compliment!

When I get done with all this WORK I have to do (it does SO get in the way of cycling, doesn't it?), I'll post a map and some more info here...

Ok - since we seem to have a critical mass of at least 4 of us, here's some info:
WHERE: Let's meet at the Temescal park North parking lot (on the linked park map (http://www.ebparks.org/parks/temescal.htm#Map), it's the parking lot at the top of the page near Hwy 24 (NOT the parking lot at the south end near Hwy 13) I doubt we'll have to pay a parking fee at that early hour, but if so, we can also park along Broadway just past the entrance for free.
WHEN: Saturday, June 10 at 8:00 am
WHAT: the route is about 24 miles and about 2400 feet of climbing, more or less. I'll bring maps and route sheets.
Notes: Bring water!! We can get water between miles 4 and 8, and again between miles 19 and 21 at the few parks we'll ride by (and bathrooms there too), but other than the parks, there's really nothing. There are no food services on the route at all, so bring whatever you'd like to eat also. (I'll have the huge bag of Luna Bars that CindySue left in my car so folks can stock up!)
FYI - Cell phone service is sketchy at best where we'll be riding, at least on my Verizon phone.

Z, do you know what street that other lot is off of? I'm not quite sure how to get there, except by riding. ;)
bikerz

Hey Winddance - The North Lot is off Broadway (as opposed to Broadway Terrace)- if you just turn right out of your little street onto Broadway and stay on Broadway all the way up towards 24, then bear right as if you were going to get on 24 toward Walnut Creek, but keep to the right and don't get on the feeway, you'll be on the road that we ride on, and the lot will be on your right.
And, if this doesn't make sense, you could always go to the other lot where we usually meet, and ride over through the park!
See you tomorrow!

. . . the feeway
Aren't these normally called toll roads? :p
Hm, I'd better run now.

Hey - that was a fun ride today - it was aka_Kim, Miffy'sFuji (and her friend Chris), Winddance (who had to leave us early due to a migraine:( ), and me. We got off to a little bit of a late start because the ride organizer (um, that would be me!) forgot the maps at home! And than as it turned out, we didn't really even need them.
According to my computer, we did just under 24 miles, with just under 2400 ft of climbing. My average speed for the whole ride was 9 mph - and I think this was the first time I've gone all the way up Pinehust above 3 mph the whole way! Everyone was on mountain bikes except me - that's got to be hard work!
It was great climbing weather (for me, that is) - cool, cloudy, not very windy. And the descending was a blast! And Kim and I saw a fox as we came down Skyline - wow - I've never seen a fox so close before.
Thanks for coming along, you guys - I had a great time!

Sounds like you girls had fun. Remind me not to ask to going riding with you girls though 2400ft in 24 miles I think I would require some sort of resuscitation.

I do! Thanks for the kind thoughts. A handful of ibuprofen and 16 hours of sleep will do that....
I am *so* glad I did not try to ride that. It was just not going to happen. That being said, we now have an excuse to do it again, because I would really like to ride those hills!

I'm glad you're feeling better Lisa!
(And I like that little tag line of yours - "matchy matchy" - pretty funny!
I've been grumpy and out of sorts all day and I feel like I need another ride Tuesday or Wednesday to reset my mood! (umm, don't I sound like good riding company? :o )

I am also incredibly grumpy. I need a ride that will make me want to get up off of my couch instead of pulling a blanket over my head and hiding from the world.
Tomorrow I have a late pm conference call, so there's no skipping out early, but I could do an evening ride. I would love to do an evening ride.
