Hi Girls!
Well the Cool breeze is one week away!
Are we still planning on meeting at the registration area around 6:15 am??
I heard that it gets crazy in the morning, so plan on getting there early!!
I am nervous, kind of!
Look for me, the redhead w/ the silver/pink bike....
Tracy, have your cell phone on, I plan on calling you early :)
Brandy, Cali, Pam, whomever else is driving up in the morning, give yourself
lots of extra time!

See you all there!!

Karen

Jana, We will miss you!

Well, Ladies, I touched wheels in 25 mph paceline on the Santa Ana Trail at Chapman today. I'm more than likely out for CB. The Er doc didn't want to comment , but I should have an appointment with An Othropod early next week. Until, then I'm learning how to do things one handed. Cannondale Evans is usual, unscathed.
Have fun, and ride lots for me!!!!
Jana

OUCH! I just saw this Jana. I hope that you heal quickly!! If you're looking to sell your registration, there are a few people at Bike Forums who are looking to buy. I could get you in touch with them.

actually.... the registration at this ride wasn't crazy at all last year..... but then.... i was there early... as i rode the double metric.... i think about 98% of the rest of the riders (both century and double metric) all arrived and started riding later!

my first ever century i did in 8 hours (and i'm not fast... not sandbagging either).... it had about 8 sag stops and lunch was WAY crowded.... and i still managed to eek out 8 hours riding alone for the most part! the elevation on my first century and this one is about the same! so you ALL would be safe in leaving when the iciness (61 degrees! EEK!) of the morning wore off a bit... say 7 a.m..... you'd all finish by about 3!

however.... that's just my opinion.... and you know what they say about opinons... what they are like and that we all have them! http://www.smileycons.com/img/emotions/89.gif

i'm sure you'll all be gone after the ride by the time i get in.... if you are starting that early! hopefully some peeps will start later and i can see you at the bar b q after the ride!

but most important.... have a good time!!!!!!!!!! and enjoy the ride!!!!!!!!!!

How long do you think CB will take you caligurl? While I would like to start as early as possible, I'm riding up with chimivee and voltman from BF, and I know that they both hate early mornings! :p We haven't agreed on a departure time from OC yet.

caligurl

last year it took me 9 hours 23 minutes RIDE time.... they have a lot of rest stops... so add at least an hour if not 1.5 depending on how long the pottie lines are! and that ups it to about 11 hours total time give or take (i won't be surprised if it takes me longer than 11... i really wish i could remember total time from last year! that's what's nice about the edge.... i get both!)

Well, if my body doesn't ride itself of this lingering cold, I may be riding at a snail's pace. I was so beat during and after our 40 miler yesterday. I was crawling up Newport Coast. :(

You didn't look too well in that photo chimivee took of you yesterday. Hope you feel better by mid week, otherwise I'm gonna have to revise my bet on your time of completion to 15 hours!...:p
Seriously, don't dwell on how long the ride is going to take you to finish. Just have fun, finish the century, get your patch, and celebrate!....that's all that matters...:)

Gee thanks! I'm just kidding...I was hurting yesterday. I couldn't take a deep breath to save my life and when you're climbing, that's a nice luxury...lol! Every picture taken of me yesterday is horrid and now they're plastered all over Bike Forums. Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Hey So-Cal gals....

Just wanted to chime in and say that I've been signed up for the CoolBreeze for a while, but wasn't sure if logistics would swing favorably to allow me to actually do it. This just sounded like an awesome-enough ride to make the drive worth it. I actually wanted to do it last year, but that didn't happen.

As the Gods have apparently all smiled at the same time, it looks like a go! I haven't made any hotel reservations yet, but will be staying the night and even plan to make the pasta dinner the night before (I'm gettin' my grub on...).

I've signed up for the full 100, but being that I haven't ridden for over a week, I have no idea how I'll feel....I'm confident I can make 70 miles and can do the elevation gain, but after that remains to be experienced. Also, strangely, I've never actually ridden 100 miles in one shot.

Anyway, if you see a black Fuji carbon with yellow/fuschia/purple handlebar tape (temporary until I can find some bar tape I like better), and tall gal astride with a pink (cranberry, officially) Giro helmet, probably with a ponytail out the back, that's me......call me BikeMomma or Kim, I'll answer to both. :p

Hope to bump into a few of ya! :D :)

Hey Kim!!!!

Glad you're gonna be able to make it! I would love to meet you... let us know where you end up staying Friday... I'm going to be at the holiday inn express at Ventura Harbor and plan on picking up all my stuff Friday night.

I also plan on being on the road by 6:30 so if you are starting early, look for me... I'll most likely have my black windbreaker on w/a dark grey/silver helmet and I'm riding a black roubaix comp with yellowish bar tape (its the most distinctive thing on my bike ;) )... I also have a topeak handlebar bag that's pretty easy to spot...

I'll watch for you in the morning!

Tracy

Thanks Tracy. I backed out of the Spinning DVD shoot and I'm laying (lying??) low this week. Well...with the exception of my friend's 30th birthday party on Wednesday night that I can go to now that I'm not doing the DVD shoot. Party hopper bus from here in OC up to Malibu. Yikes! I'm bringing Avery along with me, so I'll be a good girl.

I'm on a de Rosa gray & white bike with aerobars. I'll have a gray helmet and 2 blond braids.

I'm driving in Sat. morning, and I hope to be able to rendevous at 6:15.

I caught a cold right after the Santiago Canyon ride and I still have the after effects - the sniffling and congestion although I feel good. Just hard to breathe sometimes. EVen though I really take care of myself when sick, this thing just won't go away so take care of yourself.

Vic: I was thinking of putting something on my number to ID myself as a TE member - like my name BCIpam & TE in the right hand corner. I know the bikeforum group is doing this and sounds like a good idea.

In addition a good place to meet - if you go to the webpage for the ride - there is a photo showing some tables with umbrella - this is right at the ride start (and more important close to the restrooms) so we can probably all at least jog over there at 6:15 to see who's there and ready to go. I'm going up the night before and checking in Friday so won't be standing in the checkin line that morning.

Anyway the plan is to still leave around 6:30 (so early!!). It would be nice for us to at least get a nice start out together before everyone finds their own speed and pace. The route from the school is a nice down hill bike path down to the beach. Once at the beach and on the main bike path riders will tend to break up but at least we can get 3 miles or so together.

Hi girls, I plan on seeing you all at CB as well. I will only be doing the metric though. Have had major stuff going on at work lately and so very little riding. In fact, my total milage for the entire month of August is 60 miles!! (Wait ... so does that mean if I ride a metric on Saturday, I can say I did a "double metric"?) Anyway, I look forward to seeing all of you.

I got one of the men's selle smp's. I had a women's version which was going to be too wide so I sold that and copied Nina's DH. I tried it out when he went on a ride w/us and it was soooo comfy... of course, we'll see if it stays that way on long rides! ... pretty funny, all of us women were in line to take a ride on Alex's bike around the parking area to check out his new saddle!

I'll probably change it out next week and see how it feels!

YIKES!! I always get soo nervous before these rides!!!
But I am SOO READY!!!

Karen just to confirm the tables aren't by the restrooms, there are near enough to the potta porties that everyone shouldn't mind meeting there. When you get there to check in it should be obvious.

I want to start early, like 6:30. The group I'm driving up with is doing the metric. I am doing the full century. A lot of people in my group are driving up same day, they are saying they are starting at 7:30. So I am DEFINITELY gonna look for you ladies, cuz I have a feeling I may be alone:eek: And would rather have riding partners at least for a while.

I want to make some time so that my metric century friends don't have to wait for me too long, however, I don't think I'll push it until after the hills, etc. maybe mile 50.

See ya ladies,

Well Audrey we definitely won't start without you although I realize at some point you'll be moving on (you are such a strong rider!). At least ride with us to the second sag. At that point lots of folks will be making other plans.

This 6:30 start is going to be tough. Really early for me. Eyes not quite open and body not quite ready to ride. The first year I did the metric I didn't start until 9:30 and the century I started between 7:30 - 8 so I alway drove up the morning of. I'm staying overnight this time so I guess no excuse to get up and be ready to ride.

Look forward to your company!

I like the pace myself so I don't want to go too fast or too slow.

that's what i have to do.... if i go too fast trying to keep up with someone faster... i'll burn myself out so i can't finish... go too slow and i'm in the saddle longer than my tushie can stand! i have to go MY speed on these long rides! and that's what i keep telling everyone! go YOUR PACE! don't ride someone else's ride! if that means you can't stay together as a group... than so be it... but in the end... you will finish your ride cuz you paced yourself!

if i feel myself getting tired at 50 miles... i know to slow down... so what if people pass me! if at 80 miles i have a burst of energy... http://www.smileycons.com/img/emotions/119.gif then i take advantage of that too!

i would feel really bad if i heard someone ended up not finishing cuz they pushed too hard trying to ride someone else's pace cuz they felt "bullied" or "guilted" into it! http://www.smileycons.com/img/emotions/206.gif

Black/orange Giant
Sarcastic grin
Big rear end, (wearing black sheebest shorts)

Audrey - you should be easy to spot...

OK so I'm between two jerseys - if it looks like the temperature is going to be above 75 - I'll wear my Terry Butterfly sleeveless jersey (red/orange/yellow and blue) with the Bolero to start. If temperatures are cooler I'll be in my Terry Rosarita (red/pink/purple). My red and grey helmet. You all know what I look like - large and in charge!!!! Big and fluffy. Easy to spot in a crowd.

Well, this was my first century and I am HOOKED!!!
Way Cool!! We got there early...5:30 am, I was soooo nervous.
Saw Tracy shortly after, starting getting ready. Didn't get a chance to talk to Caligurl, but Tracy and I saw her running across the parking lot :)
I met Pam, Audrey and Nina and Brandy, and Bikemomma for the first time.
Pam,tracy and Nina were riding together.
I started with my friend Christy, And Brandy was riding with some of her friends from Bike forums ( forgot all the names)
The weather was great!!
I didn't need my Sunglasses till after mile 50!
The rest stops were SWEET! But the bathroom lines were long, to be expected!
All in all VERY FUN DAY!!
Ride time 7 hours 6 minutes
Ave speed 14.3
Next century Amtrak...Sept 9th.

OT - Brandy send me your e-mail address...my Mountain bike club is going to be in OC over labor day weekend. Thought maybe Your friend I was talking too...(.I forgot his name...James?.) might want to ride with the group.
He is more then welcome to join the DirtChix....it is mostly women but we do have a few guys!

Bikemomma...e-mail me ...You were a great ride partner! Thanks for stopping and waiting and for being so patient!!

Thanks everyone!

I had a great time on the Cool Breeze ride, but I didn’t met anyone from TE.

I got to the parking lot at about 6:10. I went through registration quickly and then got my helmet, bike, shoes etc. and headed over to the table area. I didn’t see anyone (I was looking for a group of several women, or anyone that might meet the descriptions that were posted). So, I headed done to the start area. Again, no one looked like TE people, though I’m not sure I could have picked them out anyway, since I’ve never met anyone from the list.

I was getting antsy, so I started at 6:32, according to my watch.

The ride started out on a few miles of bike path, then onto the freeway, where semis were passing. Some guy without a route slip even asked me if this was the right way. But there was a wide enough bike lane so that it didn’t feel scary - I didn’t even feel that push of wind that passing semis can create.

About 10 miles in to the ride I realized I was hungry - that’s not good. I didn’t understand it, I had had my regular hearty breakfast of a banana and as much oatmeal as I could eat, and that usually keeps me pretty satisfied for a while. It must have been that I hadn’t really had much to eat the day before - gotta watch that. Anyway, there was a large selection of food at the first rest stop, so I had some peanut butter on a bagel and off I went.

I think the most hazardous part of the route was a small green slimy drainage stream crossing the road at the bottom of a short, but steep hill. I slowed down a lot for that (my last fall was caused by my tires sliding out from under me on a slimy green puddle). After I got through, I started to pedal up the hill, but my tires were slipping. I was pretty sure that I was going to fall, but was able to unclip and then I walked my bike up until the hill leveled out a little and I could get back on.

Pulling away from the second rest stop, there was no one in view in front of me. So, I assumed I was going the wrong way, and pulled over til someone passed, and I could follow. This happened a few times, and everytime that there wasn’t someone I could see, I was certain that I had screwed up reading the route sheet. I even pulled over once (there was no one in view on a wide open street in front or behind me. A SAG Wagon saw me pull over and the kind woman in the van assured me I was going the right way.

The hills after the second rest stop were bigger than I thought they would be. The biggest was supposed to be after the 3rd rest stop, and this century is only supposed to have 3500 feet of elevation total, so I was expecting smaller hills. As a matter of fact, there was supposed to be one big hill, and I have no idea which one that was.

After I got past the hilliest part, I was still feeling pretty good. And then I hit a hill at 45 miles, and was surprised the amount of effort it took. I tried to shift into a lower gear in the back a couple times, but I was maxed out. Then, at the top of the hill I moved the chain to a smaller ring in the back, then went to shift to the larger ring in the front. It wasn’t shifting. I looked to see what was wrong. Yeah, I was in my bigger ring all the way up the hill.

The 10 miles before the last rest stop were the hardest for me. My legs were really beginning to feel the distance, but I had been riding from some people from OC for about 20 miles and that helped.

I loved the last rest stop. The popsicles gave me strength! I felt great riding the last 15 miles (even though there were a few miles of torn up asphalt in this section). I was talking about this to a few people at the meal afterwards, and they agreed. Though one mentioned that it could have been due to the tailwind we had on the way back.

I thought the ride had great scenery and great support. I sort of wish there were more riders so I wouldn’t have to worry thinking I was lost. I also think that the course was marked really well, most impressive were the markings for the dangerous hairpin turns.

I ended up with a ride time of 6:09:54. Average speed 16.5.

I5.

Oh poop...I had a detailed reply typed out to you (complete with multiple quotes) and I accidently deleted the big post...darn it! Anyhow...I agreed with so many things on your report...the hazardous section, the confusion after RS2, the leg between RS4 and RS5 being the toughest and the last leg being the best/speediest! BTW...everyone I've talked to has agreed that the elevation for the century WAS NOT 3500 ft! Several people measured 4700+ ft for the century route on their altimeters or garmin edge's.

Wish we could have met up!

Does anyone know if Kim (bikemomma) made it home safely?
Present and accounted for! :D

I was concerned about the ride home, admittedly. But, I stopped by Starbucks and got extra caffeine, so I was fine for about half of the 4.5-hour drive. After that, the caffeine wore off and sleepiness took over, so I pulled over at a well-timed rest area and took a little catnap. After waking, I was fine for the rest of the ride home, with the help of a bag of m&m's and some nasty french vanilla cappucino purchased at a mini-mart gas station. Yeck!

Got in at about 11:45, after stopping at the grocery store for the husband. Apparently, he didn't think I had a full enough day...... The bed felt wonderful, I must say.

As for my ride report, I started the ride about 15-20 minutes later than I really wanted to, as I wanted to hook up with Tracy & the others before the start, but with having to check out of the hotel & all beforehand, I got there a bit late. My 'puter said 6:48am as I rolled out.

I had the descriptions of Tracy and Karen in my head as I started and sorta hoped I'd be able to catch up to one of them somewhere. Well, I ended up passing Tracy somewhere along the line (she said later she thought it was me, but wasn't sure), but as I passed this cute long-haired redhead on a bike decked out with pink accessories, I thought "Hmmm...bet this is Karen." And lo and behold it was.....and so, I gained a riding partner. ;)

The hills were tough in some spots, but with the hill training I've done this year, I was able to get up them without problem. I was faster up the hills than Karen, however, but it was no biggie for me to stop at the top and let her catch up. Hill climbing is all about pace -- you have to go your own speed and at your own level of comfort. Waiting gave me a chance to really enjoy my surroundings. It's a gorgeous area.

I admit, though, sometimes the crest of the hill turned into a sweet downhill right away, and I couldn't resist a fast curve or two before I stopped. Those switchbacks were fun, fun, fun!! My max speed was about 36mph (it actually shows 56.4mph, but I know that's incorrect -- must have had some interference somewhere). There were some fun, twisty, fast descents. Good for adrenaline junkies (like moi).

The bee sting, though, took the cake for my most memorable moment of the ride. The sucker got me on the forehead right above my eyebrow. Yowwie zowwie!

The rest stops were awesome as reputed - plentiful, good food, fresh fruit, lots of liquid. Even the porta-potties were tolerable ('cept for the lines...). The registration the night before was nicely organized, as was the post ride check-in. The friday night pasta dinner was good, got carbed-up pretty well there, and the post ride meal was yummy (ate it on the drive home). Those were some huge popsicles...yum! The hangliders at the last rest stop were of particular interest to me...another thing I want to try. ;)

I took pics (ask Karen :p ), and I'll post those a.s.a.p. I really can't spend any time on it tonight, as I have some reading to do for my night class.

It was great to meet you, Brandy, Pam, Tracy, and especially Karen (anyone I miss?). We must work on the Nor-Cal gals to come down to this ride (it's worth the drive, really, but then again, they'd have an even longer drive than I did...).

Kim,

I'm SO glad you had a great ride! Karen is awesome and I'm glad you were able to hook up w/her :p Those drives home are hard aren't they! I had a hard time too and mine ended up being only about 2 1/2 hours; I would've been in trouble w/your drive. Next year I'll stay both nights and go home in the morning!

Ya know, from the bay area, the drive is only about 5 hours (from SJ anyway) so it isn't much further than yours... we could make it a weekend thing and have a blast! I hope some of them will decide to come next year!

I just want to send a great big congratulations out to everyone who completed their first century. Cool Breeze is not the easiest but I think it's one of the nicest.

A BIG SPECIAL THANKS go out to my ride partners Judy, Tracy and Nina. I had a ball! Just wish I took more pictures. I carried that camera but just didn't whip it out enough. My bad!

Hope everyone is feeling fine. Audrey, please check in on your ride, Judy how did Sylvia do? Good job Brandy on your ride, great time for a first century!

* * *

Just a follow-up the next morning I did a TNC mountain bike ride. Was fearful that my legs wouldn't be up to the task. I actually felt great and the ride was just what I needed to loosen up stiff muscles. Weather was awesome. We saw deer, skunks, hawks, a beautiful little red velvet ant, and some snakes.

The only problem I have is with my girly parts being sore so tonight I'm off the bike, staying home and cleaning house instead ( but I actually rather be riding! :( )

Hi Girls, Just checking in. I only did the Metric, and after hearing about the elevation on the Century, I'm glad I opted for the Metric. Hills are NOT my friend!! But I've made a resolution to start hill training.

I thought the ride was great. the SAG stops were the best I've seen on any ride. After I split off from Pam, Tracy, Judy and Wayne (all doing the Century), I hung around and talked to some of the Channel Island Bike Club people who were manning the SAG stops. They were great. Also spent some time with the SAG people at the last SAG (popsicle) stop - all very nice. At the end, I sat with a guy during lunch who was from the area. He was having knee problems and was going to have to ride back home- elevation 700 ft. from where we were. (Am I into SAG stop eating and food, or what??) Went riding on Sunday. I told Alex that was my "reovery" ride. His knee was feeling good and he probably could have made the CB, but couldn't get off call at that late date. Anyway, I had a great day.

Hey Nina
Glad to hear you had a good ride and a Metric is still worth bragging about in my books especially if it has hills (they are not my friends either). Did you take your Col or did you use your bike with the triple??
Well Done

ok ok ok!

let's see! i got up at 12:15.... we left the house at 2.... we got to ventura and i was shocked at how many people were already there! last year there weren't that many people THAT early! first people i saw were brandy and james... (and the mean ole lady at registration yelled at me cuz i was talking to brandy and no paying attention to her! THE NERVE!)

i saw a bunch of other bikeforums people and saw tracy! i got ready... ran to the potties and back (that's when redhot saw me! lol!) i lost my cleat cover... so had to retrace my steps to try to find it... never did!

i left without hubby (as usual! lol! he always gets me ready THEN himself ready... so i leave and he has to catch me!) i rode with the fixer/roadfix... it was nice not being alone for the "slasher movie set" portion of the ride! (plus there were a lot more riders on the route this year than last!)

hmmmm funny moment.... i was riding along with hubby, fixer and some other guys behind me... and i saw an orange arrow pointing right... so i TURNED! and they followed! they followed me right into someone's driveway! lol! i was so embarrased!

we continued along..... and then i saw a couple of guys.... so i was trying to keep up with them.... actually passed them for a minute! then they passed me.... then a couple more guys passed.... i kept following them.... then i realized that hubby and fixer weren't back there! uh oh! i called and hubby said just keep going... ok.... well... i shouldn't have followed them! cuz we missed an arrow! we're going and going... i'm thinking "WOO HOO" this is great! until they made a turn and i realized... there was no arrow there.... they stopped... and were looking at their route slip... i went across the intersection and was looking at my slip... then called hubby to say i missed a turn! ugh! had to double back.... what a mess! lol! got back on course finally!!!!

met a bunch of other bikeforums folks at the 2nd rest stop.... some i had met before... some that recognized my name (one new person i met said "so you must be the one that "cali hill" is named after!" lol!)

anyways... again... as usual.... i left the rest stop before hubby... told fixer "you guys will catch me".... sure enough... here comes hubby with a train behind him (and one of the guys said "he didn't even say hi, honey" as he flew buy... yes he did! lol!) the continued on up casitas... then next thing i know... there's fixer! i TOLD him they'd catch me! lol!

the ride continued... up and down... around.... well marked (i liked that they marked the U turns so you knew to slow down!) on one particularly long, steep descent... we did leave fixer behind.... then a while later he caught us again! he's an ANIMAL! it was funny cuz he said "you didn't have to wait"... uhm... we weren't lol! he's just FAST on that thing!

the rest of the day was more of the same.... riding.... climbing.... descending.... eating.... seeing peeps from the forums! we passed brandy and her gang as they were leaving lunch (the routes meet up at several times during the ride)..... after lunch we saw green machine on the side of the road... hubby asked if she was ok... she said yes... so we kept going (i don't think she knew it was us! lol! hubby had recognized her bike as we were coming in to lunch!)

*sigh* then it was time.... we were back at manning park... and that meant "cali hiill".... so off we go.... i had a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie for instant fuel :D  just before beginning! and up we went.... the "funny" thing.... after we got to the top... after my year of griping and yes... B!TCHING about that hill.... it wasn't nearly as bad this year as last year! don't get me wrong... it's a steep, tough hill! but i just remember it being more grueling last year!

after that it was some rollers then downhill to the last rest stop... then the coast back to the start/finish!

we got back and brandy and the gang were pigging out! some more riders came in and joined us... then it was time to shower and change for the long drive home! just as we were driving over to the showers fixer showed up! can you believe it! 130 miles.... 8000+ feet of climbing... on a FIXED GEAR! (my edge showed 9522 feet when i uploaded (http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/episode/view.mb?episodePk.pkValue=1232227) it!) (that link should be viewable for a little over a week... or until i upload 9 more rides!)

we showered... changed... then went back to see if tracy was in... she was! YAY! then we headed home!

we got home some time after midnight... so by then we had been up for 24 hours! UGH! (needless to say i did NOT get up at 4 a.m. on sunday as i usually do!)

anyways... here's some pics:

okay, here's a brief report...

Pam and Wayne and I stayed in Ventura and picked up our numbers etc. and had dinner the night before downtown (very cute, btw)...

I got to the start before Pam and Wayne did but then fiddled around until it was them waiting for me  ...

Anyway, we started out a little before 7 and ended up being in a group of 5(Pam, Wayne, Nina, Judy & Me)... several other people we knew were ahead of us but riding at a pace I couldn't keep (BikeMomma, Redhot3368, Judy's friend Sylvia and a few others!).... anyway, it was a beautiful ride with one hill before rest stop 2... then the hills began in earnest after RS2  . Actually, they weren't that bad by themselves... its just the 50 miles on the other side of them that I was concerned about! At rest stop 2, Nina headed out to complete the metric while we plugged ahead on the century route; we were sad that she wasn't riding w/us but it turned out to be the best thing as the hills were a bit more than advertised! After the hills, my legs were pretty much done and I was wondering if I was going to make it to the finish... and this at mile 50... so you've gotta know I was thinking CR*P, what did I get myself into????? but Judy, Wayne and Pam kept encouraging me and even though they could have been finished much earlier, stayed w/me and made sure I finished! We made it to the lunch stop okay and sat down for a little while; my legs felt fine when we were stopped but it only took a little while after getting back on the bike for the fatigue to start setting in! Anyway, I had a great time and just kept plugging along until we got to the end.... I DID IT!!! YEAH!!! Brandy was already there; telling me that Caligurl was looking for me to see if I had made it back okay... you all are the BEST!!! I didn't really feel like eating so I just got my stuff together, hung out for a few minutes and headed home (it ended up taking me almost 3 hours to get home!) Even though I was really really tired at the end, I don't really feel any ill effects other than some fatigue in the quads; so I don't think I was as bad off as I was actually feeling on the ride itself! At one point, Wayne started covering my eyes whenever a SAG wagon appeared and he did actually push me up one of the overpasses (okay, I could've made it but it sure was nice to get a little help! ;) )

All in all, it was a great ride and I have decided that I'll definately make this an annual event!... especially since I've got lots of room for improvement :p

Thanks Pam, Judy, Nina, and Wayne for keeping me rolling forward! You guys are wonderful!!!

Trac...

next year when you do CB... you will wonder why you thought the hills were hard...

Just an FYI for anyone who is interested in trying the "back half" hills (and seeing what we are fussing about) but don't want to commit to the century...

A number of my friends do the metric - but the "back half". They drive up and park at the Bates Rd. sag, start from there. Get all the big hills and the lunch stop and then they finish up at Bates. Can sit and enjoy your popiscle knowing the ride is done. Great way to do a harder metric or challenge yourself on the hills.

PS:

Consider this ride for next year - Wildflower Century, in April, put on by the SLOBC bike group (see SLOBC.org). Talk about great sags. And talk about awesome scenery. But warning - hills are tough.

Tracy - Congratulations. Im impressed your first hundred and plenty of climbing- you DID GOOD. Hey LRRH sounds so easy in comparison. Just imagine how easy a flat century will feel for you. Well done, Well done, Well done.:)

Actually, other than being really slow at them, the hills weren't bad at all... it was the distance that killed me! ;) I would've rather granny'd up more of those hills than deal with the slight grades at the end... those were really hard on me for sure! ;)

Unfortunately, I think the Wildflower will be too far for me to travel next year with all that I'll have on my plate... I will definately do it some time though!

I think DH is not wanting anymore overnight rides on the schedule after this weekend.... I just can't wait to tell him that I'll be gone for a week for my training!

Thanks Trekhawk!

It was a great ride, for sure :p They advertized 3500 feet of climbing and it turns out (based on all w/computers... they can't all be wrong) that it was more like 4700+... I was really tired at the end but the hills themselves were fine (I just go very slowly). I definately did not get enough long rides in beforehand so I am pretty pleased that I finished and that I am not suffering any aches and pains!

So, Trekhawk, I have to figure out how to get to meet you before you head away on your next adventure!!! What rides do you have scheduled?

Leslie, For sure, I'm a member of the 4 C Club!!

Tracy, Since the hills by themselves were Okay, I wonder if the new saddle will make a difference on the distance. Alex says it makes a huge difference for him. Also your hand. On the way back, I noticed there was a lot of rough pavement along the Freeway section that was tough on the hands. I was thinking of you as I was going through that section. After as long of a ride as you had, I can see that last section being difficult.

I envy you for being able to do the Century!!

You know I thought about the elevation changes - I think when I first did this ride it was about 3500' of climbing but over the last several years, the course has changed and even this year was different. I figure the ride organizers just haven't re-measured the route and noted the elevation changes. I know that long, grinding right turn out of Summerland is new and adds lot of elevation. I did like some of the route changes. I definiately liked the Loop inland, from the second to last sag to Bates. Before we always did 101. Not certain if I liked the Loop before lunch. Before, since the route was out and back, I just shortcutted (don't tell anyone...) into lunch. Now they make us work for lunch. Darn.

Tracy - too bad you can't do Wildflower but good ride for others to consider.

Another good ride coming up is the Kern Wheel SPOOKTACULAR. An interesting ride especially the longer options (90 and the 2 centuries). I have driven up the morning of but it's always a long day. Much better to stay overnight. Spook always has the best jerseys!

Anyway - I done with roading for awhile - time to concentrate on mountain
biking unless someone wants to talk me into doing another century...;)

OK my one beef about the route... anyone else other than Tracy and I notice... along 101, the Bike Lane signs had been painted over so many times as to be a hazard. Everytime I hit one I was reminded I had been sitting on a bike all day. OUCH!!!

Well, we shall soon see! I'm doing my little wine country loop tomorrow and then stopping by the LBS to get my new seat put on! I'm really looking forward to seeing how it is!

Yes, my hand was killing me by the end! We were laughing at how even the painted bike lane things were hurting.... I think they had at least 50 coats of paint on those things and I was concentrating on moving forward so I'd come up on them and not have time to maneuver around them.... OUCH! They were hurting Pam too, so I was not alone in my compaining! :p

I'm glad I did it, for sure! I did not prepare adequately as it should not have been that hard but now I know better for next time!

I wore my PI shorts but I can't remember which ones they are... one of the microsensors or something... not the ones w/the pink/purple (?) inside but they have a large pad but its all gray and it is one of the 'something sensor' shorts....

actually all areas covered by my shorts (ahem ;) ) are okay, a little tender until the next morning, but nothing major... I picked the right ones for the ride... so far those and my attack shorts are my favorites!

Hey Tracy what sort of saddle are you getting??

I always like to know what works for others or not.

As far as rides for the rest of this year - I only have a couple planned.
Im doing Fair Oaks Metric this Sunday. Siskiyou Century in September and probably Foxy's Fall Century in October. I think.

Perhaps we could plan for a bunch of us to get together in the new year on one of the Spring Centurys. LOL - do you think that would give us time to plan. Also my husband would be over the shock of looking after the kids for a whole weekend while Im at the Siskiyou Century.:D

I got one of the selle smp strike saddles... like slinkedog has, but the men's version... I just didn't want to be changing saddles right before a long ride. Looks weird but if comfortable would consider trying it.

Tracy - if you can do the Limestone ride Saturday let me know. If not, let's see if we can find a Saturday morning or evening to do Chino Hills. I especially love Chino in the evening all the critter come out - especially the B-cats and coyotes!

Anyone else interested in doing a cruisey canyon ride up Telegraph let me know. Chino Hills trail starts out of Carbon Canyon Regional Park, just east of Brea off Lambert.

Also I have some good TB rides coming up in September and October. I'll go ahead and make a new post for those. I haven't gotten the new TNC schedule yet but have signed up for some great rides. In October we are doing the Fremont/Weir/Blind Loop - which is fairly challenging and the Fremont/Tecate out and back which kicked my booty last time but I'm hoping to do better. Both of these start out of Irvine Regional Park.

challenging technically? or lots of hills?

I don't think any of it is technical - it's all on fire roads but I did hear after the Sierra Peak Fire the Edison company put alot of water bars on the W/B/F Loop downhills - so they maybe alittle technical. Della and I will be doing the ride probably next month to check it out. Tecate is just grindy, grindy, grindy. Not technical. Just grindy. Did you get that? GRINDY!

Chino Hills, however is alittle technical - not bad, especially lower Canyon (Telegraph). There are several fun water crossing. Most are dried out by now. In the winter its a real challenge as the water can be running quite high. Mr. Palmer had himself a good fall in one muddy stream. I however, walked through it. The upper ridges (which we'll do some other time) have their technical moments. I rode down Sycamore trail for the first time without stopping last month. First time in 4 years of trying. Wayne, Della and Paul fly down like its nothing. Hate them!

OMG...my eyes are going to fall out trying to find mine! If anyone spots my group, I was with Melissa when we went by! We're not in the first group...I'm on to scouring the second set.

I'm not sure they have posted all the photos. I purchased mine at the event and my number was 289 in File No. 3. Tracy was right after mine at No. 290. The File No. 3 series only goes up to 230 right now. If I'm wrong, let me know. Tracy, did you find yours?

How is the quality Nina...it's hard to tell on the site and I don't want to spend $18 on a fuzzy picture!

I thought the quality was good - better than on some others I've been on. I think the overcast sky improves photo quality. The photo guy told me he was just retained to do this event about 1 week before. He said the previous photo company (I don't know who that was) is more of a computer guy (sets up camera to go off at predetermined point). This guy said he is more of a photographer and less a computer person.

Hope you find your photo.

OK I'm clueless I never saw a photographer. I'm so used to Photo Crazy who gives you ample warning and the time the photo is posted. This is almost impossible to find. Tracy/Nina - was the photo taken early or late? In what group?

Ninabike

Pam, I don't remember exactly where on the course the photographer was located. It was probably about half way between the 1st and 2nd SAG stops. He had a van set us with a big sign that said "3" on it when I passsed. We were all together at that time, so yours would be near mine. Like I said, I found my photo at the finish where he had a big table set up with long strips of photos. My number was 289 in File 3. I saw Tracy's right next to mine, but I didn't have a chance to see anyone else because everyone was crowding around the table and it was hard to see. Right now I can't find mine on the site, so that leads me to believe they haven't posted all of them yet. I'll e-mail the guy and see what happpens.

WOW! I must have been in total dream land - I never saw the photographer or his van. Can't imagine what my photo looks like since I wasn't posing or looking at the camera. If you alls ee my photo, or Wayne's, let me know where it is.

Pam - I e-mailed Doug Rich and told him the photos numbered after 230 in File 3 are not posted. You, Wayne and Judy would have to be right near mine and Tracy's. I'll let you know if he e-mails me back.

Okay girls, I have been e-mailing Doug, the photographer. He re-loaded File No 3. Our pictures are there. Go to the site and look under the 2nd listing for File#3. Arrange the pictures at 3 down and 5 across. Go to page 15. We are all there between numbers 213 and 223. I'll let you find yours. They're all great!!

OK... finally found them. Love Tracy, Nina and Judy's... mine sucks (when I see a photo I always can't believe I'm that fat... darn...) and no doubt Wayne, like me, had no clue a photographer was there. His photo is not good.

Oh well, at least I have my memories!

Nina - I am very good with Photoshop... I can help you out there.

I did that with a photo a friend took of me where I looked particularly "fluffy" and sent it back to him. He was amazed - I looked quite the babe - of course, nothing like myself...

Guess I should be proud - fat chick on bike does 100 miles... yeah I'm estatic!

Photo Shop is probably a lot cheaper and less painful than some of the other "cosmetic" procedures one could undergo to have one's bod altered. Hey, who cares. It's all about the ride!!

Cali,

When I e-mailed about the remaining #3 photos being posted they asked for comments/suggestions and I said they should make sure to get all routes as my friends who did the DM didn't get their photos taken!

no help for this ride but hopefully for next time!

That's usually what I do (scan it) as buying the digital version (downloadable) is usually very expensive. Now adays with digital photograph and clarity of photos, a scan photo looks almost like the real thing - sometimes better, shaper.

Hi Caligurl,

I like your avatar too. I haven't been on the computer for the last couple of days so haven't noticed the new avatars. I'll get mine on there one of these days. Have to figure out how to get the right number of pixls (sp) - whaterever you call those things, etc. I am going to do the bike portion of the L.A. Triathlon on Sept. 10, so maybe I'll put that pic, or the one from CB on there.
