I bought one last year to take on a tour, just as an insurance policy. My LBS guy seemed a little confused, but I figured I wanted something easier to carry.
Any other reasons for folding tires? It seems that's the only kind that exist in the Continental Ultra 2000 that I love... so I'm getting one anyway... maybe two... or three, 'cause I don't want to be two tired to ride... but I was wondering what the deal was with folding tires unless people are like neat freaks.

All other things being equal, folding tires are much lighter weight. Then, there is the convenience factor because it folds for carrying. You also tend to find the higher end tires which have a more supple ride (through higher TPI) with a kevlar bead for all of the above reasons.

I blew out the sidewall in my tire over the weekend, and I did not have an extra tire (tubes, yes; tires, no). It would have been great to have an extra tire. I would not have had to wait by the side of the road for an hour for a friend to pick me up in the car. I think I'll get one just in case...

You couldn't "boot" it with a dollar or a gu pack? That's what got me home the end of last summer. The gu had oozed through the tire by the time we got home, but we got there. (I'm not sure it qualified as "blown," though.)

I don't think they have Kevlar but the Continental Ultra 2000 has been my fave tire and I think they're going away (Why?????) - hmm... I should probably check the stock in my local LBSes, though that's one thing I tend to get on-sale-online if I don't need it right away (like when the sidewall gives...) Thanks for the info. I don't think a lighter tire will make much difference on a 45 pound bike - except that it is the part that counts, that rolling resistance.

I don't know, the hole is pretty big, even for a boot. And at that point, I had no tube because I had blown the two I had (first one as I was riding, second one as I was pumping up the fix). I did have a cell phone and friends, however. Eh, I needed new tires, now I got 'em.
