If you ever break a gear cable on a ride, here's a tip to get you home without busting your quads. If you have a screwdriver, or some semblance thereof, turn the set screws on your derailleurs until you are in a gear that's comfortable enough to get you home in. You'll be riding in that one gear all the way, so pick some middle-range gear. Turn the "H" on the rear derailleur (turn the screw 1/2 to 1 revolution, then turn the pedals, repeat) until the chain is in your chosen rear cog. Turn the "L" on the front derailleur if you want something other than your smallest front cog. If you have to improvise the screwdriver (fingernail?), manually push the jockey wheels of the rear derailleur inward, and while holding them, turn the screw.

Now why was I thinking about this on my ride home today? Was it a premonition? I better check my cables. I've actually only broken a cable once.
