Burning Question

Dear Fellow Riders,

I am riding in an expedition adventure race coming up soon. We will probably ride for at least two days, non-stop. I know there have been posts on this before and have read through them, but I just wondered if anyone had any updates.

Ever since I have started biking, both on my road and mt. bike, I get this burning sensation down below! After an hour, it really begins to bother me. I take saddle breaks, and have used lots of different types of shorts, butt'r, angles of the saddle, saddles and balms, and nothing seems to work. Its just the front area that burns. Sometimes I feel that so much heat builds up which makes the area succeptable to cuts and major chafing. It really begins to hurt, so much so that I sometimes I think maybe I am just not built to be a biker. I have asked my ob and she doesn't know what to tell me.

Wondering if any of you could help me with this?

Have you ever tried one of those goofy seats with no nose? I tried one once that was just two round bits: one for each sitz bone. (then I got a Terry Sport and the world was a beautiful place)

It's a bit harder to control the bike without a nose on the seat, but it might be worth trying one out at the LBS just to see if it'll work for you.

I assume you've already tried the diaper wipe thing.

Have you had a bike fit by a PT?

I don't know if this would help, but I know salt (from sweat/urine) is a major skin irritant- make sure you get all pee off after you go, and reapply whatever cream you use. Try not to shift around. Maybe a saddle with a really narrow nose?? Good luck...

Have you considered a UTI? This happened to me, and went out went to my urologist, he wrote terry liberator on a prescription pad. Now I ride with the butterfly, but fortunatly my urologist was also a cyclist and strongly suggested that I get a saddle with a cut-out. Obviously always wearing clean shorts is important, as is good hygiene.

This being said, diaper cream with zinc may help more than regular chammy cream for your itching and preventing irritation/infection. In the summer when it gets REALLY hot and I ride for many many days in a row it saves me from a lot of (h)assle.

The others have given great suggestions too...

Just a suggestion for AFTER the damage is done--I find that a little spritz of solarcaine w/ aloe provides some relief. I usually have this problem after riding our tandem - it's not a custom, so there is only so much I can do with the saddle position, and this has worked.

Let's just say that "mowing the lawn" to 1/2 inch or 1 inch can make a big difference.

But ya gotta mow the entire lawn.

I really don't think it's going to help with burning (bush!!! couldn't resist!! didn't really try!!) issues, but it's nice to get away from the 80's bush- it's the year 2006!!!

I think, like circumcised penises, unshaved coochies are more or less a thing of the past.

Just speaking from what I see on kids at work.

Not the bush part, they are usually too young for that.

But the boys- it's a trend. Not to whack.
