This ride was not timed so that people consider it a ride and not a race but there was one "mother" of a hill that they did chip-time. It was 1/2 mile and about 13percent. In approaching it all I saw was a wall ahead. I had almost psyched myself out but then just went for it. I was determined not to walk.
It turned out that I won my age group and beat most of the riders, women and men, up that monster. It was a glorious day, surprising since I don't consider myself a hill climber but then again, all we have here are long hills of all varieties so we ride hills continually. WE got a $50 gift certificate from REI for winning age groups...my first prize!!! At 58+ I was pretty stoked.
and, best news...they photographed it and there I was at the crest smiling into the camera in my Amici Veloce shirt for all to see!!! Climbing hills is just something you do to ride, perhaps it's more mental than physical, for me anyway. And the free floating descent is the prize!
