Hey California girls.

On monday, Andrew and I are going to fly somewhere for a little adventure. Probably an easy day of hiking (he just had meniscus surgery so can't do anything too strenuous).

where should we go?

criteria:

- within 100 miles (as the crow flys) - small plane w/ small fuel tank
- commuter airport
- easy hiking trail or something scenic and walkable
- a cute little downtown would be nice but not necessary

some considerations, but hope you can help with more creative ideas:
- yosemite
- columbia (we've flown here before, so probably not, but a good backup)

Mendocino? Gualala/Sea Ranch?

Hmm - are those too far away?

DH flew us to Bishop once to hike Mt. Whitney. It was sure a lot easier to fly there than to drive!! You can get over to the June Lakes area also - that is supposed to be beautiful. Easier hiking than Whitney for sure. I don't think it is 100 miles, but we did it in a single engine whatever-it-was airplane DH's club had.

What about somewhere in the Shasta or Lassen area? I remember flying by Shasta and Lassen on the way to Red Bluff to pick up a friend of DH's to go to Idaho and think how cool those mountains looked just sticking up out of the flat lands like giant zits.

Somewhere in So. Oregon?? Crater Lake?

Central Oregon and Utah are supposed to have rain all weekend. I'd take this as your last chance before summer to head south. Joshua Tree? Mono? Lone Pine?

For Lone Pine, you gotta fly to Bishop.

Santa Barbara? SLO town? Don't know of much hiking down there, but cute downtowns abound. :)

Have you guys ever been to Point Lobos? Carmel is right there, so you've got your cute town too.

I know you were looking for something more creative than Yosemite, but it's supposed to be absolutely amazing right now. It's killing me that my husband and I can't get enough time off together to head down there (we got married there, so we like to go together). The falls are supposedly so full that the sound of them fills the entire valley.

lunch spot - picked up lunch at a small deli in downtown Carmel, then brought our lunch here. There were a few sea lions but I wasn't able to get a shot. Lots of birds also!

can't figure out how to load these all at the same time without you having to click on the file. The rest of these shots are from the airplane. I thought the pictures from the two sides of the plane were interesting from a city planning perspective.........

a few more including mt. Hamilton and Mt. Diablo.

The WWII bomber is used for charity rides. 20 minutes for $400. I'm not sure what the charity is.

The huge house is one of several I could have taken pictures of. Wow!

Wow - what a great trip! Nice pictures too!

How convenient that Andrew is a pilot - maybe he can fly you to LRRH! (sorry - I'm cross-threading!)

just long enough to get lunch. It was absolutely gorgeous at the state reserve!

The flight went well. Very clear day with just a few low clouds on our depature (see photo above). They even gave us a courtesy car at the airport. Nice!

I suppose we could always borrow a plane big enough to fit two bikes. But his plane is itty bitty.
