I've mentioned this guy to SK and maybe to V - there's this super cool old guy, Gerd, who rides double centuries. He has been at the last 3 I have ridden.
At Knoxville, he came up behind me and my husband as we were climbing Howell Mountain Rd. "Hi, honey, how ya doin'?" he said to me. We chatted a bit climbing the mountain and then he went on. He finished well ahead of us, though he'd had 3 flat tires. (And we weren't exactly slow!)
This guy is built like Levi Leipheimer: slight and strong.
At Davis on Saturday, he hopped on DH's wheel going towards Cardiac, and I followed behind him. He was strong and consistent in a 20+ mph paceline. I expect he again finished this ride before us. We'd seen him the night before in Wheelworks complaining how he'd taco'ed his wheel. In a paceline. Riding to Chicago.
Well, I just looked him up on the Triple Crown website. He is 73 years old. He's done 27 double centuries in the last 4 years.
Now there's something to aspire to!!
