Looking to ship our bikes. More then likely we will use Fedex ground. But Dhl is cheaper. Anyone use them before?

I work for DHL and can certainly recommend it. It is cheaper and the service is better.

I sold a bike on ebay and shipped it DHL. DHL was way cheaper than the others and the bike got to its location right on time.

I'm not a DHL fan. I've never shipped a bike with them, but they very recently lost an item being shipped to me. I hadn't had anything shipped DHL to me in years. Had 4 things in one week. Monday, nothing came. Tuesday, there was a note on the door about a missed delivery. Wednesday 3 boxes came. Tracked package 4 on Wednesday. Said delivery was attempted Monday - no note on the door, plus I was home all day. They said wait a day. Call Thursday - they said they'd ask the driver and call back - never did. Called Friday - told me I should have called earlier   and that the box had probably been delivered elsewhere and was irretrievably lost.  They told me to call the merchant - luckily, it was replacable and I was dealing with a helpful company (and I don't mean DHL). Left me with a bad taste in my mouth - clearly others have had better experiences....

I've experience scr*w-ups from every company at least once -- DHL, FedEx, UPS. But on the whole they get it right most of the time. I shipped DHL last time and all went well. Whichever route you choose, do be sure to insure.

The thing you must *never* do is ask Bikeless to carry your bike for you in her luggage. She has a record of every other flight they loose her bags. Sure, it shows up later, sometimes she's lucky and gets to shop on her trip insurance before the luggage arrives.

The family joke is she should leave enough clothes here to fly with an empty suitcase. Then when the airline sends her bags to Aukland instead of Oakland....she has room for the shopping on the way back. ;)

That would not be ethical of course and we don't do that. And of course as long as the airline does not loose her we're fine.

So you see, if my things have gone missing or arrived late -- once with FedEx, once with DHL, once with UPS -- it hardly counts. I'm jinxed that way. ;)
I think my worst experiences, tho, have been with FedEx. For a while there dh and I called them FedUp. It was beyond what I am accustomed to in the way of delayed luggage etc. But they too have got things right for me on occasion since.

The PetsMart I used to work at shipped thier critters with them, and they always took good care of them. If they still allow critter shipment you could just write rare bird "Bicyclitis aviarus" on the side of the box to make sure they treat it tenderly. :p

Our biggest customer had an national account with DHL and requested all our shipments to them shipped that way - until DHL kept sending overnight packinges to Ohio over and over again and delivering them 2-3 days after they were due. Our customer has since switched back to FedEx. The other problem we've had with DHL is we can't get credit satisfaction. If the overnight packing isn't delivered overnight DHL won't issue credit, they'll send it to their credit department for reveiw. Even though you can Clearly see on their webpage tracking site that the package did NOT get delivered overnight.

Just recently: DHL picked up a package from us, took it to their warehouse, determined they couldn't ship it, returned it back to us and charged us for shipping becuase they had a "delivery" signature. Even tho it was considered a "rejected" package. The very nice lady on the phone could see it was a rejected package but was unable to offer me a credit since it was "delivered". She was going to refer my request to the credit department.

*shakes head*...I never had these problems with FedEx or UPS and we ship from work every day all over the world.

Lenusik: interesting you work for DHL. Maybe the next time I have issues with them I can send you a PM and find out what I can do to get satisfaction??

Based on my shipping experiences through work, I wouldn't use either, I'd go with UPS. ANd I have shipped bikes through UPS and they arrived fine.

I undersstand that DHL is by far the best for international shipments--they go to parts of the world that don't get service otherwise. HOWEVER, they somehow managed to lose a tape from my mortgage company with all the information an identity thief would need, but to be fair, they found it someplace a few weeks later.

I've just had bad customer service experiences with FedEx ground. Basically when they've lost something, we've been told we're just SOL. Not very good CS.

I ship bikes every summer, and have had the best luck with fedex ground. The only other company I used is UPS, and they are rougher. I had them damage some ohter items, not a bike but lab notebooks. I do summer research in woods hole so ship stuff annually, and the guys that work the loading doc also advised me to use fedex ground vs ups for my bikes. In fact, they refuse to ship bikes ups due to not wanting to fill out all the damage claim forms. Sorry, but I have no experience with DHL.
