Bike Goddess "(Did you all forget Trek420?)"

Thanks, should have said I'm one too! :)

And what's great is many of you I've met and done rides with. I've even slept with BG :D Don't worry TE gals I mean we were tentmates on the AIDS ride.

OT: Shadon, ACG, liksani will you do a ride out together? Seems from the board that a lot of teams or groups are doing that on Day 2.

Is everyone on the map of TE?

SadieKate,

I'm just north of Berkeley, in Albany actually. Funny that my profile doesn't say my location. I could've sworn I typed Bay Area, CA when I set it up. Oh well, I'll get around to updating it one of these days...

In San Jose. And umm, ride out? I didn't know people were riding out together on day 2 hehe. Tho I should probably start super duper early on day 2, i am slooooow and doing 105ish miles slowly will umm, take me a while. :D

Trek420

It just means that you agree to meet up in bike parking on a particular day and start out together. The Velo Girls have done this both years I rode. On day 2 we took a group picture like this

http://www.velogirls.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=4621

... then started out and from then everyone is at their own pace, my pace is slow too.

Day one is your only mass start. Be very super careful TE gals, there are lots of riders who: just went clipless because someone told them they should, trained hard....in spin class, first group ride...leave plenty of distance ;-)

From then on out while there will always be a lot of people on the road you'll tend to fall in with, ride with and get to know pretty well the people who ride your pace, or ride faster but start later, or ride slower but get going earlier, or ride faster but spend more time at the stops or.....

liksani
05-19-2006, 09:20 PM
Haha... actually I went clipless mabbe two weeks back? For some odd reason, I only fall on training rides :( Go figure. But still loving my new pedals. And I figure i'll get all my falling done so uhh no more falling? :D And I was looking into getting a duffel bag now to fit all my stuff, how big a bag do I really probably need?

Trek420
05-20-2006, 08:59 AM
hmmm, I'm at work so can't measure my ol' bag. You're limited to 70 lbs. I think so something that will hold that. That's to be kind to the luggage crew, if you think riding to LA is hard, lifting all that....so think "holds all my stuff, fits in a two-person tent with another person and another bag that size..."

cindysue
05-20-2006, 11:15 AM
You're limited to 70 lbs.

70lbs? Gee wiz. Does anyone really need that much stuff on a one week supported ride? I plan to bring between 30-40lbs (less if I can get away with it) on a three-week self-supported tour.

I think it would be fun to hear some of the stuff that people brought on the ALC last year. Do tell!!!!!!!

Let's see, it wasn't last year, but 2000 when I did CAR 7.

Toiletry kit
7 pr shorts
6 jerseys - bought 1 on the ride for 7
7 pr sox
7 sport bras
1 pr tights
1 pr armwarmers
bike jacket
baseball cap
hoody sweatshirt
sweat pants
t-shirt (may have brought 2 or 3, I forget)
1 pr jeans (worn on orientation day)
flip flops
tennies
2-3 prs regular sox
drugs - the legal kind
hydration pack
extra hydration pack tank -- not needed
tubes - not needed, thank you Pasela TG tires
sleeping bag
sleeping pad
camping pillow
towel
8 pr panties (didn't need them, after day 2 I went commando with my sweats)
pants and shirt for train ride home
book
camera
film (lost one roll somewhere.....)
water bottles (for gatorade)
sunscreen
zinc oxide
luna bars (because God knows, they don't feed you enough on these rides  )
bike shoes
tent decorations

whew.

First year - brought too much, had to lash my sleeping bag and pad on the outside of my duffle.

Second year I managed to pack everything inside the duffle. I was so proud, then I got sick and didn't get to ride.

2 things about heavy bags- YOU generally have to CARRY the bag to your tent which might be a long ways away from the truck. And when you are tired, it's not fun. You also have to CARRY the bag AND your tent BACK to the truck the next morning. So, keep it light if you can.

I also recommend that you put air in your tires when you get in from the day's ride. Otherwise you will have to wait in the morning sometimes 1/2 hour or more to get a pump. I was lucky- only had to pump my tires once that entire week. BUT, do check the pressure daily. You must ride at 100-110 lbs minimum.

On that note, I hope you all have good tires. If you don't, now is the time to get them on your bike! Your goal for the ride- no flats. :) :) :) :) Start with good tires and the recommended tire pressure. Flats occur when you don't have enough tire pressure, bad or worn tires, bad tubes, and of course, unforeseen junk on the road. So, you can prevent a lot of misery by being proactive in this regard.

On that note- pack in a couple of spare tubes in addition to the one tube you take with you at all times. IF you have a flat, you can save the flatted tube and replace it with a new tube for your spare the next day.

what Bike Goddess says "keep it light if you can."

a wheeled bag is a must unless you have a backpack.

good morning routine is pack, head to the truck with helmet gloves and bike shoes either in hand or on the pack. Once at truck put tennis shoes/tivo's/keens whatever on top of bag so they will be ready for schleping use on arrival to next camp. Ask kind, fast and well organised tentmate (thanks BG!) to make sure you don't take off with the BIKE SHOES IN THE BAG.

I've done that, had to aks the luggage crew to get it back out :o

"check the pressure daily. You must ride at 100-110 lbs minimum."

Funny, I never had to wait long to pump the tires, I do this in the morning on the theory that my tires will be hot from my blistering speed (ignore the sound of TE gals hysterical laughter in the background) so the PSI will be up. But check the tires each day, nothing slows you down more than a flat.

"Your goal for the ride- no flats. :) :) :) :)"

I thought it was to have fun, ride safely, support a good cause :) :) :) :)

I think my LBS was kidding when they said they were out of my tires in 26 so they gave me 25's. I could feel the difference. why train? Buy speed! :) :D

But seriously get new tires and .... where there is a bike lane don't hug the far right, don't go over it to the left either but the road debris is gathered in the far right and people who stay there on this ride...flat a lot.

Spokes!! If you have wheels with non standard spokes take a couple of extra. Some people do keep those on them taped inside the seat post. I would think the rattle would drive me batty. My LBS let me borrow a couple spokes and I kept them in my bag figured if I need one and the mechanics don't have it in the truck worse case I go into camp, get the spoke and ride the next day. Because I brought it I did not need it, If I hadn't....

24? Unless I counted anyone twice. And many of those will be at the Saturday ride.

Who's missing? AG, Spazzdog of course, Velo Girl aka Lorri (and one of these days I think the board should all show up at a Velogirls ride and/or a Lunachix event). Can we count Bikeless? She was born and raised here at least. Or she can take "dual citizenship" when the Europeans do a count.

TE Frappr Map (http://www.frappr.com/teamestrogen)

Now, if we could just get the map admin ;) to change to default so all the markers load at once. That map is so sad looking with only fifty little balloons showing.:( You can even set the map so you can see the entire world on the initial load. It's pretty impressive to see everyone at once.

This Sunday! Thanks for asking. It'll be some sort of Bianchi. I'm traipsing all the way into SF because I like the sales people at Pacific Bicyles (they're near work.) Plus they're having a pretty good sale this weekend. I've been reading everyone's comments on the key accessories, which have been extremely helpful :)

p.s. Now if I could just get little side cars for the dachshunds... and maybe little helmets and sunglasses............. They hate to miss a good ride :)

I think you have to keep hitting the "show more markers" button until all 282 pins are showing. The only defaults I can change are zoom & center and map type.

If you want, I could make the map default to zoom in on your house, SK...

AG, it looks like logging in as admin with your password and then click in the upper left to simply access the map, can't find this in the options menue. So just log in first and go to the map, you'll see in the lower right of the map it says something like 45 of 93 shown, something like that, click on show all. It should change the map to show the entire map of the globe at the same time.

What I don't know now if that setting stays the same or just for that one view.

I took the Frapper map idea to "my other board", that's how I tried this.

I posted an intro in the New Riders section. I'll go check out the Getting To Know You thread too. :)
