Has anyone done this ride? I'm going to try to do my first full 100 on the 22nd at the Windmill Century (since I won't make LRRH :( ) but want to use the metric on this one as a training ride.... any input on difficulty. It says the century is difficult and the metric is moderate-difficult but they don't show a route...
Any info would be appreciated!
Tracy
ps. okay, it does give a brief description of route but I'm not seein' where the difficult (seems mostly coastal) part comes in so I'm guessing I am missing something!

i'm doing it.. but it's almost my first time... so i have nothing to offer as far as the course!!!!!!!!!!
i know for the mardi gras ride.. they emailed a few days ahead of time asking which food we want.. and this ride says we get to help pick food again!
we're already registered for this cuz we ended up with a raincheck (a real yes it was raining and COLD) for mardi gras....
i'm looking forward to it since the rides have thinned out by that time!

almost your first time???? is that like being sorta pregnant? :p You are too cute! I think I may do this one as a day trip, it sure seems like it might be a nice ride! I guess it'll depend on how long its going to take me to get up there! I hadn't even thought about the rides thinning out by that time; is it just kinda like a new year's resolution thing... start out doing lots then stop doing so many after spring?
I have used up my july favors w/dh though because I like to drive up the night before and that means he's on his own w/the kids and if its a sunday, he misses his golf game too  tragedy that it is!!!
Oh well, I'm sure I can figure some way to get this ride in ;)
I'm going to go hunt down some more rides!!!

Okay, Now I'm switching! I decided not to do the Windmill ride and do the 3 harbors metric instead... lots less driving and I don't have to be gone the night before... that helps keep hubby happy!
So I will be there for the metric! YEAHHHHH!!!!

Hey Caligurl! :D
I could probably do it but I don't know if I'd be too tired to drive home too! So I think CB will end up being my first century... especially since I'm staying the night before and won't have to get up at 3 to get there! :p

Hey Karen,
I'm still planning on doing the metric; probably pretty slowly so I plan to start as early as I can!
I was planning on driving up the same day but there's still a possibility that I may go the night before.
7am at registration is great w/me! We'll fine tune it as it gets a tad closer! I'm looking forward to meeting you :D

Hey Ladies,
I just got here and it is absolutely beautiful over here! Although, I am freezing (it's probably 70) but breezy.
I got turned around finding the start so I'll just tell ya how I got here...
took the Victoria exit off of 101N and turned Left (west). Turn right just over the bridge/overpass (okay, I'm really helpful, I can't remember the name  ) anyway, you'll go a ways on that street and you'll then come to Harbor, go across harbor and it turns into spinnaker. You'll follow spinnaker around to the other side of the harbor and as you are passing the ventura harbor shops you'll see a gazebo on the right with a yellow banner... I'm guessing they will have more banners etc. tomorrow though.
Well, I'm gonna go check out my hotel room! See you tomorrow Cali and 3368!!!

I'll post more pictures tomorrow but basically it was a perfect day for riding. I met Redhot3368 at the registration line in the morning; she drove with her DH who rode the 100 miler (very quickly, I might add!).
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i104/tprevost/Three%20Harbor%20Tour/ThreeHarborsTour005.jpg
Karen and Tony
Also, her friend Kim came too... these two ladies are SO pretty and really cool to ride with!!! We saw Caligurl at the start and along the road, then at the first rest stop.... then she off and left us in the dust! I had to leave before Cali returned so she's gonna have to give ya all the details of the 100 miler.
Anyway, as usual, I was plugging along trying to keep up with Redhot and Kim when I tried to get them to go ahead since I knew I'd never make it at that pace! They slowed down to where I could keep up and we proceeded to make our way through Ventura. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i104/tprevost/Three%20Harbor%20Tour/ThreeHarborsTour010.jpg
Karen (Redhot3368) and Kim at rest stop #1
En route to our first rest stop, we met another woman (Kay) who was riding alone and we invited her to ride w/us... of course she also was faster than me (but only on the flats). Once past the first rest stop, we started towards Ojai on the bikepath.
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i104/tprevost/Three%20Harbor%20Tour/ThreeHarborsTour016.jpg
It was a really nice path and a lot of it was shaded and very scenic. The 2nd rest stop (also the lunch stop 20+miles later) was at a really pretty park in the oak trees... the food wasn't that great but it was a nice place to stop and regroup. Once we left that rest stop there was an uphill grade up into Ojai... that's when I found out that I was actually faster than someone up hills (Kay was slower than me :D I know, what a meanie... but I am always last, so it was nice not to be the very last one for one ride!)... it was actually a pretty gentle grade and still lots of shade and really pretty. Once we got to Ojai, we actually went down on the "other" side of the triangle (casitas pass side).
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i104/tprevost/Three%20Harbor%20Tour/ThreeHarborsTour023.jpg
Lake Casitas
We turned again just east of Lake Casitas so we didn't actually go over the pass and there were a few rollers until we got past the lake... but once we got past the lake, there were a few really nice downhills (unfortunately there were also some headwinds) and a nice gentle ride back to the lunch stop.
We hung out at the rest stop for a little while and then finally got going for the final 15+/- miles back to the Harbor. It was slightly downhill but the headwinds pretty much negated the benefit so we plugged along at what was a decent clip for me until we got into Ventura where a hill slowed Kay down to where I had to stop and wait for her.... Redhot and Kim went on ahead and Kay and I finished shortly thereafter. It was about 55 miles and the weather was perfect. It was warm enough not to wear any jackets or anything when we started and it didn't get too hot mid-day either... and the sky was perfectly clear.

There ya go... sorry, I'm not a writer... but I did have a great time today! Thank you Redhot (tell Kim, thank you again too please) and Caligurl for making it a great day!!!

bummer about the sunburn CG! I heard this is only the 2nd year and this one guy is trying to do most of the stuff himself... once I heard that, it explained a lot.... maybe you should e-mail him with suggestions to improve the ride; apparently its better than last year so eventually, he'll get it down! I'm definately going to send a note with some route marking suggestions! Sometimes you actually had to ride right up onto an intersection to see which way you were going ... yuck!
I'm looking forward to seeing your pics and reading all about the 100 miler! I'm sure you had a good adventure!

hubby already told them about the intersections like that... not all of them were like that... but ya... since he was following the arrows... and i had the slip... he got annoyed with that!
i'm going to email them/him... and i will take my time and let hubby read it to make sure it comes across nicely and not b!tchy!
my HUGEST gripe..... registration! i've been on rides with 1000 riders that i've gotten through registration faster than yesterday morning! 1/2 hour in line! for a ride that was 200 people... and you saw how many were already of me... MAYBE 20?????? oh i was steamin'!!!!!!!!!! and the ONE lady doing the check in.... she was VERY nice... but she really needed to stop chatting and get registering! UGH! the real kicker is... they were READY to start registering people BEFORE 7.... but because it was 7... they wouldn't! again... never been at a ride where even though it wasn't "time"... that they wouldn't start if they were set up and ready!! SOOOOOOO instead of hanging out 10 minutes.... never assuming it would take so long if i came back a few minutes later... we went back to the car and finished getting ready.... unfortunately... that set a tone for the ride for me.... i dwelled on it for a while

yes! those are my FAVORITEST summer thing to wear! i love racerback styles... and it has a pocket! what more could you ask for! for some reason the pink one is smaller than all the rest i have (blue.... yellow... white... etc!)
and my headband is "wickie wear" brand... i just LOVE that name! too fun to say! "wickie wear"

in the case of what we are talking about... it's a racerback cycling "jersey" with a rear pocket!
(it's what i'm wearing in tracy's picture above!)
oh... and my shimmels (the ones from performance and from nashbar) are all mediums.... i wear women's medium tops from those places... however in most other cycling jerseys (womens) i wear a small.... also... in street clothes... i wear a small top/tshirt/ blouse/etc... performance/nashbar tops run small...

ok..... i already complained about the check in/registration fiasco..... so i don't need to go there again!
i was REALLY undecided about whether to keep on my long sleeved shirt over my shimmel... knowing i'd have to take it off before too long... but not wanting to be cold at the start... since it got so nice so quickly from the time we got there til time to leave... i opted to not wear the shirt (and not have to carry it the majority of the day!) it was an OK choice! i reapplied sunscreen... but it didn't help... or maybe it did... i wonder how red i would have been with NO sunscreen! ACK!
so we headed out... this route had several retracings of routes.. or circles back to where you were... we rode along the coast... and by some absolutely GORGEOUS beach houses!

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b236/desertbriez/3%20harbors%20tour/100_0340Medium.jpg
hubby was just cruisin' along..... (he originally intended to "make" this be a "fast" century for me... that is until we hit the CROWDED bike paths and all the stop signs/red lights and yet another crowded beach path!)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b236/desertbriez/3%20harbors%20tour/100_0341Medium.jpg
because of the "out and back"... we met up with tracy and redhot at a stoplight and of course... took advantage of the photo opportunity!

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b236/desertbriez/3%20harbors%20tour/100_0346Medium.jpg
just beyond that.... there were THE COOLEST bathrooms... i wish i'd whipped out my camera... the architecture was just too cool... round little turrets! but alas... only the picture in my mind of that!
we rode along on a crowded (with lots of dogs for me to say "HI, PUPPY!" to! and roller bladers... walkers... runners.... joggers!)... bike/multi use path along the ocean... it was very pretty!

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b236/desertbriez/3%20harbors%20tour/100_0351Medium.jpg
from there... it was onto the streets... but then back onto the bike paths.... a little hairy with the directions there.. cuz we needed to turn on rex street... but it was labled dubbers or somehting like that! but it was ok.... the next bike path had less people... but it was away from the ocean..... then *cue slasher movie music* we were in the slasher movie set area! *shaking and scared*..... continued in next post.....

i've mentioned that this part of the bike path creeped me out during cool breeze... i was not pleased we were riding it for 2 harbors! lol! but i had my night in shining armour.... uhm... errrrrr... night in lycra... to protect me! the pics don't show how creepy it really looks!

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b236/desertbriez/3%20harbors%20tour/100_0354Medium.jpg
once past that part... the rest of the path/paths were gorgeous! some shading.... nice trees.... wide paths... not too many people (and a dirt path along a good portion of it for the people with dogs! and i still said "HI PUPPY!" to all the dogs!)
i decided this club was run by hobbits! lol! the next rest stop was labled lunch stop 1! (then there was a lunch stop 2! so 1st and 2nd lunch... like a hobbit! tee hee!) anyways... the next rest stop was in a nice park.... stayed long enough to grab some grub to stuff in my bag to eat on the road! after some more pretty bike path riding... we were back on the road.... at this point... we lost the 2nd arrow (metric riders) and they were lucky enough to miss the climb by castaic lake! it was pretty though! and not too hot!

this is somewhere along the way... after the top of castaic climb....
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b236/desertbriez/3%20harbors%20tour/100_0362Medium.jpg
we rode through/past rincon... and some other pretty areas.... the 2nd lunch stop was also in a nice park... at that point i realized that we were making a 25 mile loop and coming back to that same part... for another 2nd lunch! lol! we had a sandwich... stayed a bit too long cuz my legs were screaming when i got back on the bike.... headed toward santa barbara... there was a rider.. yes... one of "us".... the ambulance and fire truck and cops were already there helping him! (apparently he broke a leg)....
the next part of the ride after climbing around a bit in summerland (spelling?) was in residential santa barbara... stop signs every few feet.... (we did pass a house with a wedding going on... well.. the after or before if it.. not the ceremony... the groomsmen and bride were out there and i yelled "congratulations!") LOTS of stop lights in downtown santa barbara.... this was NOT going to be a fast century by ANY means! but it was very pretty! and fun having hubby riding along! then it was time to hit the beach bike trails again... more slow going... but very pretty!
part 3 in next post.....

we left the beach area... and headed back to lunch stop 2.... left there and headed "home!" along the 101 for a bit... then old pch... very pretty!

OH... the coolest thing... we're riding along and pass a recumbent rider and hubby says: "hey that's ron" and quickly hollars "hey ron"... it WAS ron! he turned around and we chatted a bit... he was doing the workers ride of the grand tour.. AND attemtping (NOT attempting.... i told him he WOULD do it!) his first triple! yes... 300 miles in one day! he was at mile 132 and looked awesome... but i digress!
we continued along pld PCH....

it was back inland some once we hit ventura.... we were following the arrows (the route slip was tiny... and orange... and hard to read...) and almost headed back out again when we took a wrong turn using the arrows from that morning (were back at the rex/dubbers road! lol!) got back on track.... and kept heading back... helped a guy along the way... he needed a co2 cartridge! got back to the harbor... YAY! ate some lunch.... and then headed home.... another century is now history...
this is one... cuz of registration issues and all the stop signs/lights... and the distance for us to travel.. that is probably in the "amtrak" pile.. "been there... done that... not sure we'll do it again".... of course... we'll see what next july brings! i think the metric is probably a nicer course (misses the santa barbara section...) but i can't justify driving over 3 hours for a metric....
it's a ride you can get a group of friends together and just enjoy they day...... enjoy the ride... no hammerfest..... just riding and enjoying the pretty views!
