View Full Version : My first road bike experience...(no i'm not becoming a roadie)

I am looking at getting a road bike one of these days but today i borrowed our Coach's extra bike. It's an extra small diamondback and here's how it went.
I joined the group who split into diff groups. Another lady & i ended up on our own (she knew the way & was happy to go a bit slower-she's a bit older too)
I rode slowly on purpose as i had to get used to the brakes being in a diff position than on a mtn bike and the gears. (all i care about when on a different type of bike is knowing how to change the gears, position and braking@!!!!)
WOW did it ever feel great to be able to zoom(or something like it) up a hill and even be in the right position. I think i averaged about 25km/hr on the flats but i noticed the odometer going up to 30km/hr as well.
I just had to remember to not go over the bumps in the road!
The bike is now in the bike shop & will be serviced on monday. My LBSG will play with the bike fit then.
NOw all i have to do is stop my dear from telling me i'm a roadie...(most of the guys we bike with ride road bikes during the week & are mtn bikers...)
Have a funky one.

Yep...that's how it starts. :D You try it once...some people get hooked after only one try....then you try it again. "I'm not becoming a roadie", you tell yourself. Next thing you know, you feel the need for speed more and more...and before long...you're a roadie! ;) But don't sweat it...you can have a road addiction to go along with your off-road one; these addictions are good for you!
Enjoy!

I had a mountain bike at one time. The hardest part of moving the move was not being able to go over the bumps, but then the down hills are much more fun on a road bike. It's the speed.;)

I will not join the OTHER SIde....I'm already an avid member of the DARK SIDE....I want my tree roots, bumps, pea gravel(as much as it drives me nuts) rocks, trees, dirt, mud & disc brakes....
Help me...i've ridden a road bike & can't get away...

Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated (different movie, sorry)......as my husband and I found out this weekend as we made our LBS owner's day - we bought two brand new road bikes. We love the speed, but we still love our hybrids for our gravel roads:) !
My feelings on the matter are that you can NEVER have too many bikes. We need an addition to the garage just for the bikes!

LOL! Some of my friends ask why I have four bikes hanging in my mud room. I just tell them it's because I haven't bought the fifth one yet. I think they think I have some sort of brain-stem injury.....

Nope... never too many bikes... never...
And are you still in denial there, you krazeee Canuck? Don't worry, TE does a good line in counselling to help get you through.

Yup, IMHO, CC, you're a goner.;)
The advantage of being both roadie and MTber, is you get to shop the entire LBS! Happy hunting...:D

Enjoy! I doubt I'll become much of a mtb'er, just not enough places to do it around here. But speed is very, very fun.

I didn't want to become a roadie cause I thought all those guys in those weird clothes were indeed too much for me! They just seemed to belong to their own world. No, never will I become one of them........13,015 miles and 3 yrs later.......:p :p :p

"All those guys in wierd clothes ..."
There's an ad on the local radio here these days, an ad for the local baseball team (Madison Mallards). The ad goes "Why is watching a Mallards game more fun than a ride on the bike trail? Two words: bike shorts. Tight, sweaty spandex. And you can't not look, because then you'll crash. Whereas ..." And then they say how women get more of a kick watching guys stand around a baseball diamond wearing knickers. What???? Not!!!! And apologies to my cousin-in-law Jim Gott here, who I'm sure was sexy in his baseball uniform, but come on! Check the red-bike-shorts sites and learn! :D :p

Well kids....
I had a bit of cafuffle last night with the yellow machine.
I was nicely into my ride when i stopped at some lights, felt the tire and noticed it was getting a bit soft. Thought nothing of it until i hit another bumpy patch and thought i'd stop at the top of a small hill not far away.
Parked my bike under a street lamp(this section is in a residential area but it's still dark) and thought "ok, i;ll do my best to pumo this stupid tyre up"...what i didn't know was that the pump i have isn't really suitable for the schraeder tube...ended taking all the air out..
Not what i needed..I knew i'd be there forever & would have to walk on home..7pm already...no idea how much time i had before my light would burn out...Decided to try the spare tyre & see if i'd get anywhere...nup..no luck...Ended up calling ian to come and get me...Managed a measly 14km...URGH.
Have new tubes & pump now.
Not my week really...tried to go to the pool this morning-even got up early (440am) as i should, got off the train and noticed it was quite dark in front of the station and down the road...poooeey...Western power was repairing the line...no street lights on near the pool...no pool lights on...no power..AHHGHRHRHGHH...Went home, had a shower & ventured to work....
Didn't go biking tonight (off road) as i already have two punctures on two diff bikes......what are the odds of having a third...hahah

That's hilarious. Adopting it as my new comeback
