I'm not putting in anywhere near the distances of some of you ladies, but...as I rode today, it occurred to me that there's some sort of ongoing log of mileage of TE board members. Yes? How does it work? I may as well get my miles in there!

Set up a log with bikejournal.com and select TE as your "club". It's a great site and the journal is really helpful!

Lise -

I just have to say - because I think this every time I see a post from you - I just LOVE your dog. He looks like he is flying. It is fantastic!!

He always looks to me like he's got a banana in his mouth. I remember one time figuring out what it really was, but I don't remember any more.

I does look like a banana. I wish you could blow up the picture bigger to see what it is.

And I love how one of his ears is all pressed back with wind because he's so super speedy!

I always figured it was its collar, or maybe a bandana around its neck... Now, of course, I will think "banana" every time I see it. :p

GUYS! Be Calm! :p I was off delivering a butt-load of babies! I am telling you, between me and the midwife before me, 8 new human beings in 36 hr. Hectic.

OK, the truth? I have no idea. He's not my dog. When I joined up here, I said I was looking for an avatar of a dachshund running. Snapdragen found me this one, thanks again, Snapper!, and I love him very, very much! But I have no idea what that is. I think it's a bandana. Or a banana? Snap, any idea?

My beloved dachshund was Schatzi, who lived to be 19. She was often the sanest member of our family, IMHO. It's a good luck charm for me to see a dachshund during a race. When I did the Chgo Marathon, I saw at least 4 of them. Schatzi looked like this guy. To me, "run like a dachshund" is so silly, because their legs are about 2" long. But they run with all their heart, joy streaming out behind them. I'm not much of a runner, but I do it anyways, and I try to do it with joy. Like a dachshund! :D

Thanks for asking! L.

I was off delivering a butt-load of babies!? .

um... I know you're the "trained professional", but I don't think that's where they come from! :p

so it's settled. it's a banana.

Are you sure a banana wasn't involved?

OK, time for me to go to bed. :o

"Butt load" is professional terminology. It's the official term for "too darned many at one time". :p

OK. Banana. But it begs the question: Why? Snaaaaaap?

It is a Banana Slug. The California state mollusk. It is generally understood that dachshunds are the best hunters of the banana slug because they can travel close to the ground under all the brush. The grand champion banana slug hunter, "Shawshank" was famous for tunneling through miles of muck to find his quarry. Banana slug is a delicacy in California sushi bars, and Shawshank earned many culinary awards..

Hahahahahaha! I did not know this! Dachshunds are uniquely skilled! Go down badger holes, drag out badger! Cruise through muck, find banana slugs! They only live to serve! :p

Frankly, if anyone believes that a dachshund would carry anything edible instead of gobbling it down, then *I* have a nice little deal on a bridge for you! ;)

Nice one FBG! :D

I went to college at UC Santa Cruz (Go Slugs!) and the banana slug was our mascot - I saw some whoppers while I was there - you really had to watch your step sometimes walking to class.

But I have to say, the idea of any creature, even a dog, putting one in its mouth is pretty hard to swallow (ahem!)

Funny this topic should come up because when I was in DC on holidays (and my kids were doing there best to make us spend it all in the hotel room - vomiting yikes) we watched a little tv. We saw a documentary on creatures with the most slime. Apparently the Banana slug rates as number 1. When anything tries to eat it, it produces super amounts of hideous slime. They had a shot of a lizard trying to down one......not a pretty sight.

I thought you were kidding! Little did I dream that the Banana Slug exists! I don't imagine that a dachshund would really try to pick one up.

We've got hoardes of banana slugs here, but they are nowhere near as psychedlically colored as that one. Amazing! Ours are all khaki with some highlights. They really like cat food.

My cats are glad to know that their food is safe, here in the heartland. :p L.

I felt like a bannanana slug when I started bikejournal and I was at THE BOTTOM. Now after 3 commutes I've moved up to 4,200-something. I'm #62 in the TE list. Of course, everyone I "passed" hasn't ridden in more than 2 weeks, but.... victory is sweet!!!:D

I'm not a terribly competitive person in person, but I'm liking this bikejournal thing.

And my commute uphill home today took 1 minute less than yesterday. I attribute it to the Speedplay Frogs. I'm sure I passed some banana slugs in the woods along the road.
