So here it is day 265 my husband and I have been with eachother 24 -7. Working together, biking together, everything. I am ready for a break you know? Love him but need some space.
So my neighbor is going fishing out in the ocean and invites my dh. Who has been itching to go for a while now, I am thinking "Yes" a morning to myself! Yeaaaaaaaa!!!!
He gets up at 4:30 to get ready yesterday morning and off he goes.
AHHHHH, I am happy. Only make breakfast for myself, catch up on my Northern exposure dvd's. Drink all the coffee and go for a bike ride on my time.
Well I get back from my bike ride to find my husband on the couch with a cup of hot coffee and he looks worn out.
I ask him how it went? And this is what he said.
He had got out about 250 yards from shore, was having a great time, when about 2 hours into it he noticed water in he's kayake ( this is a kayake made for fishing he borrowed from our neighbor, he said he thought he was imagining it, that the water had always been there. Well about a half an hour later he realized he's body weight was having no effect on the boat, then a big swell came and that was it, it went under! He scrambled to try and save stuff then realized how far he was going to have to swim and said scr*w this and then tried to tow the boat behind him. The part of the ocean he was in is very cold on the central coast of California. Hypothermia is always on your mind here. Surfers wear 3 to 4 mil. wetsuites and booties when they surf. My husband had teva's and shorts on. he did have a life vest and a kayake jacket on ( so if you roll this type of jacket helps keep the water out for a bit) Oh and did I mention Great whites hang out around here sometimes. So anyway, he tried to save the boat and got really tired fast and finally said scr*w that too. Oh he did have our neighbor with him out there but he was to far away to hear my husband yelling for him.
He finally made it to the rocky shore where he said it took like 10 minutes to get up the slippery rocks and on to the beach. He said he started to convulse from cold when the emergancy guys showed up (a little late) but they did give him hot paks and blankets, towed the boat in and went and got our neighbor. Ohh and they gave my husband some new clothes to change into. Almost a brand new pair of levi's and a ll bean sweatshirt. My husband tried to refuse and the ent guy said it was donated stuff. So that was cool.
SO I guess my moral to this story is watch what you wish for. I wanted time alone so bad almost got to much time alone. We hugged for a long time and snuggled watching tv last night.
Oh after he told me he's story he said " I think my bike ride is out for today" then procceded to take two naps yesterday and fell asleep by 9:00 last night.

Brandi, glad to hear that your DH is fine, I been to California and know how cold the ocean water can get. Although, I dont think that your wishing to be alone for a bit played any role in what happened to your husband. Its only natural to want some space from time to time, you are your own person and some selfish time for yourself is only good for your being. So, relax and I am sure there will be much safer ways to get a day for yourself.

How frightening for him!! Good thing you didn't know about it till it was over! Glad everything turned out ok.

There's this saying about cold water- 50/50/50/50-

If a person is in 50F water for 50 minutes, he has a 50/50 chance of survival.

I am going shopping and meeting a dear friend for lunch today. I think that will help me out for a little alone time.
My friends dad drowned in the same area. Te rescue guys told my dh that they pull people out all the time there.

Nanci The temp for the water he was in was around 52'. That is fraken cold (battlestar galactica geek here). I am glad i didn't know too. I am a huge worry wort!

i personally prefer not to swim in the open ocean by myself or without being in a visible distance from the shore. Every experience in life is a lesson for to learn.

That's forsure. Check and make sure your boat doesn't have a hole in it! Which he's did. Some plug had fallen out.

What a story.....I am so glad your husband is ok. I can't imagine a kayake in the ocean. My parents are boaters and when my father was looking for a boat I remember him choosing something that was "ocean worthy" as he called it.

I have the opposite problem, my husband and I do not have much time together at all. From April until Dec, the only days we have off together are major holidays and if I take a vacation day on Thursday, his day off. There has to be a happy medium for us both.

Lunch with your friend sounds nice.

Glad your DH is Okay. My hubby and I sail off the So. Calif. coast and you can never have too much respect for the ocean!!

Whew! Scary, is right! I used to teach deep water survival to navy pilots--in case they had to eject from their airplane over water--and hypothermia is more dangerous to them than the ejection itself. You're both so fortunate.

On the other hand, I also understand the impulse for you-time. My husband retired last summer and he just about drove me crazy until he got busy with his own projects.

Glad to hear your husband is well and warm. Wow - what an adventure.

And don't feel guilty about needing time for yourself. Everyone needs that at some point or other. And if things had gotten to the point of arguing over toothbrush colors - sounds like you both needed it.

Geez that water is cold - he's very lucky to have come out of it relatively unscathed.

OMG! Ok, my brother used to live on his sailboat in morro bay, so I'm totally seeing where he prolly was- or the general area! And knowing just how cold that water is.. OY!! Someone was looking out for the both of you today. Count your blessings girlie- though I KNOW you are!! Send him my bestest warm fuzzy AZ vibes!
Oh- and I can't believe that his "friend" actually expects him to replace the pole!! If it were MY boat I wouldn't think of it! Even if he offered I would refuse.. People!!

I am only 25 and would never consider asking you to pay for the fishing pole. Come on, he invited you DH and it was his faulty boat that almost killed your DH! I don't think it is age.
