View Full Version : WAY OT! Music for the traveler
On Monday I leave for Washington DC on a Bus with 50 of my sons friends! I am in the process of filling my MP3 for the 9 hour ride. I need new material! What would you bring? I like most music and am very open to all but Rap. I have tried, but I just don't dig it!

I really like Death Cab for Cutie. Might score points with the kids, depending on how old they are.
Barenaked ladies is all time favorite band.

Try Marc Broussard. It has kind of a sort of bluesy r&b sound to it. It's difficult to explain - but really good music.

If you do a google search for "marc broussard" it will automatically bring up the music of the first song on the album "home" - one of my favorites.

Podcasts are a great idea for when you get tired of the music and just want someone to talk to you about interesting things. The Onion does some good political satire.
Musically, I'm a fan of the rock classics: the Beatles, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix. But I also love Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopfler.
Have fun!

Road music for me equals alt-country stuff that makes me picture a long pale highway and me in my car rocking out.
Nothing does it better than Lucinda Williams and Kathleen Edwards.

When I had a 13 hour flight to Japan, here is some of what I put of my mp3 player
311
Sublime
Bjork
Comedy - Dane Cook
Jet
Bob Marley
Some Rap
Sappy love songs
That's all I can remember right now. I really like to have a lot of variety on long trips though. I can't take one genre for an extended period of time. I really enjoyed the comedy sets I had.

Jimmy Buffett! :D I don't go anywhere without a generous helping of Jimmy's tunes. And ABBA.....their music helps the miles flow by easily too.

I'd rather listen to Bill Bryson's "A Walk In The Woods" for hours at a time than just about anything, even though I've heard it so many times I have it memorized. It's my traditional road-trip entertainment.

Lots of good ideas! I would love books on MP3 also but my player is only 256k.

Laura Fygi's "Bewitched" album. Big band classics with Toots Thielman on harmonica.

I think Lucinda Williams is a great road music choice - especially the CD called "Lucinda Williams", and my current fave, "Essence".

If you can find them, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (punk band that does cover songs of all kinds of songs - from "Isn't she lovely" to "Nothing compares 2 you") are one of my favorites.
I always throw in some classical as well. Calms the nerves :)
Have fun!

I love Me First and the Gimee Gimees! Don't they do the cover of "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" I love riding my bike (or driving my truck) and singing that at the top of my lungs, over and over...

Nanci, good to see another gimme's fan :D My fav's from them are "I am a Rock" "Sweet Caroline" and "Nobody Does it Better." It's funny when you hear the original on the radio and it sounds weird.
I saw NOFX in concert a few months ago. My b/f is a big punk fan (no mohawk or the like). Actually if you looked at him you'd never guess he was so into punk. He's the one that got me into the Gimmes. Fat Mike, who I believe is still playing Bass for them, did the entire show in women's lingerie. At one point, let's just say some things fell out the side of the black panties he had on.
I'd love to see the gimme's in concert. They're currently in Europe. Maybe they'll swing through town.
Whew
I am working on a giant play list. I will let you know what happens! You ladies have some great taste!
