Hey... just saw on the news that Sierra Road has been very badly damaged by the rains (the water is running underneath the road and it's totally crumbling away in spots) and they're not sure when, if ever, it will reopen. Wondering what this will mean for the DMD and other rides that include this climb.

Wow - wild. Maybe they'll make us go back over Hamilton.
Thanks for the info!

Got this info forwarded from a friend:
There are signs at the base of Sierra Road indicating that the road is closed. Connie and I went up Sierra Road to check it out.
About half of one lane has dropped significantly making it unusable for any traffic. The other lane is passable. However there are lots of cracks indicating a weakness in the soil under the pavement. The entire road has been barricaded to prevent cars from crossing over the depressed lane or the weakened lane. Auto traffic could cause the presently passable lane to collapse. I doubt that the road department can repair the road and open it to auto traffic before May.
It is possible to walk or carry your bicycle around the barriers. Bicyclists, particularly those doing the DMD, probably can proceed with only a minor nuisance in having to dismount to walk around the two barriers that block the entire road on each side of the wash out. There are more cracks in Sierra Road than I noted a couple weeks ago. It should be no problem going up Sierra in the daylight because you will be going slow enough to see them. Be very careful going down Sierra Road since you might have to negotiate around enlarging cracks. Those on the night ride also should be cautious.

Thanks for the info! We live at the bottom of Sierra Rd and my husband likes to ride up it at night. I will pass this on to him!
