I just had to share this with you!
My daughter (age 4) and I went for a ride together today. She was so cute on her PINK princess bike (streamers and all) and training wheels. I had just come back from an afternoon ride (during which I felt like *&%@ - I've been sick all week) and I thought this would be a nice way to cool down (it's 80F today). She's been wanting to ride "with" me. She rode a whole mile! Everytime we'd loop back around to the house, she wanted to keep going. She was going at whopping pace of 2mph. I literally rode circles around her and racked up 2.8 miles.
I completely forgot how bad I felt during my ride. She was singing and riding along, ringing her bell. It was pretty darned adorable! I think by the end that her legs couldn't go anymore and she crashed - no blood though. She got back on and rode back to the house. She might have a future in this ;)

Oh, what a neat story! I remember a ride with my daughter. I think she was 10 or 11, her brother 2 or 3. He rode the kid seat on the back and she rode her own bike alongside. We did 34k. The next year, as I recall, she did the long route, over 50k, with her Dad. She's now planning to do the California Aids Ride with her aunt in 2007. They do grow up fast! Enjoy each moment.

I may have done 50K at age 11, but that was years ago and took a lot of chocolate for getting up hills.....Since then it's been more chocolate and less hills. But thank you for the reminder. If I've done it once, I can do it again (provided there is enough chocolate around to get me up the big hills).

The chocolate method involves going up the hill ahead of the kid, stopping on top of the hill and calling back down "Shall we stop for chocolate up here?" It works, up to a point. I almost kept on going just to get to the top of Lemondrop hill, but ... 1) the headwinds!, 2) my peleton partner, with lots of ride smarts, called for the wagon - I rode (slowly!) another 10 minutes to stay warm until it arrived, but when they asked me too it was definitely time, and 3) lemon drops are not chocolate.
What sweet stories! I can absolutely see the 4 year old with her pink bike. May she continue to discover the joy of riding. :)
If she is a real rider, she will eat you out of house and home when she gets up from her nap!!!!!

How adorable! I can't wait to get my almost 4 yo son outside for a ride. It's supposed to be 60 this weekend, but it's his weekend with his dad:mad:
I got my mommy moment this morning though - it was absolutley pouring rain so we got out his firefighter raincoat jacket that he got for Christmas, complete with reflector tape. He looked so darn cute - I was one proud mamma! (I did play hookie on Tuesday - balmy 40's and sunny so I picked him up at daycare for his first trailer ride of the year:o )

True enough - she ate an entire burger (homemade - big burger), about 1/2 tomato, cheese, and tons of water and lemonade and a big piece of chocolate cake for dinner. Keep in mind she's an itty bitty thing weighing in at 33 lbs. My husband said that this morning she said her legs were sore. And - she ate big bowl of cereal.
Apparently her appetite is still pretty good - 1-1/2 sandwiches for lunch!
Now - if only we could get her off the training wheels...

That's about the age my mom started me touring. I think we usually did about 25/30 miles per day. We did a some weekend over nighters in Western PA, where I grew up and our first week long trip was up in Nova Scotia.

Great story! I love how kids get into bicycles. A few weeks back I got caught in the rain on my ride home and it seemed as if more than the usual number of motorists were nosing into the bike lane (trying to pass on the right), so needless to say I was grumbling and feeling pissy. At one point, I looked up at the car next to me and there was a little boy in the back seat with an ear to ear grin waving at me like crazy. Made the rest of the ride a lot better and lifted my mood!

that is so cool... I can hear how exciting it was for you from your post :)
I am always amazed when I do event rides how many really little kids are out there!
on the Tour de Poway there was a little girl with her dad... her bike had streamers... she looked to be maybe 7 or 8 yrs old... and did 50 miles with a LOT of climbing... dad helped her up some of the steep stuff but man, how cool is that???:D
