You know, you're cast on a desert isle and can only take one Spinervals DVD with you, which would it be?

I am asking b/c I got a trainer, dropped the gym membership, and have limited funds to put toward this. I guess I am asking what is the best Spinervals for all-around bike fitness? I would hope to grow my collection eventually, but wonder where to start. TIA, ladies :D !

Probably No Slackers. It seems to have the most variety. It's not my fave - that would be Zoot Challenge.

Hillacious. Fun and tough. This one has really helped my hill climbing---I'm "chicking" guys on hills much more frequently since I've been doing this one.

Of course, the old standby favorite, Have Mercy (the original). You can break that one into mini-workouts since it's 2 hours long. Loads of variety, too.

I guess I need to do Hillacious this afternoon. I've had it for two weeks and it's still in the shrink wrap.

Where do you get these DVDs? I'm not sure my LBS carries them. I'd have to get them through the 'net, as I live downunder.

I like both Uphill Grind and No Slackers. It's kind of a toss up. Ok, give the edge to Uphill Grind just because it's easier to gear down if I want an easier work out but harder to convince myself to work harder if ECT isn't there to abuse me.

SK---No cheating on your gears! Those hard parts of UHG (haha, what an accurate acroynm) are only 4 minutes long!! Do you have Hillacious? Now there's a quad burner :-)

Why not? If you only have the one tape, you have to "cheat" on your gears to have the appropriate variety to your workout day by day.

Hillacious has an awful lot of rest after each interval. I had to really keep an eye on my HR to make sure it didn't drop too far in the four minute rest sections.

I do like the simulated rolling hills.

I think Hillacious needs to be on my birthday list. I still can't do No Slackers, especially since I SAG'd on the Cindy. ;)

Actually I'm partial to the time trial DVDs. I also have uphill grind and Big Gear strength.

Girl, I was just teasing you!! ;) Actually, a friend of mine does the tape using her puppy (granny) gear when she wants a recovery workout.

It's hard to say which one, because he has 2 types...he has sets of DVDs that are for (off-season) aerobic and endurance (base) building training and then he has DVDs more geared towards getting ready right before the season starts where you are doing more true interval sets (harder, ~85% MHR) and anaerobic work. Ie, once you've gotten your aerobic base set, you can work on the next level. This is not the same as his differentiation between "Fitness" and "Competition" -- I find I mix alot between his Fitness and Comp series of DVDs.

So if you want all around, works for more aerobic -- try his newer aerobic training DVDs (Aero Base Builders, there are 5 of them, one is a compilation). Most are 1+ hour in length and there are alot of sets you can tailor to your liking. Otherwise, if you want routines to challenge you beyond base aerobic training, try some of the others like Lean and Mean, Sweating Buckets, No Mercy, Uphill Grind etc.

Lastly, I just tried his Irongirls DVD, and if you want a good cycling (aerobic, up to lactate threshold) and strength circuit combo in about an hour, it's great and challenging. You do need a set of dumbells and a ball, along with your bike of course. A very good all-around type of workout.

Or, look for a great sale !!!

I think "Have Mercy" is a good choice because you can get either a one or two hour workout from a single DVD and it has a good variety of intervals.

You might check EBay --- might be able to get some used DVDs or VHS tapes more cheaply than new.

Yup, its a good full body workout. I usually mute the tv cause I'm not a fan of Coach Troy's banter and turn up the ipod and it makes for a good, fun aerobic workout. I've found stability balls as cheap as $10 at Walmart and they have some pretty cheap dumbells also. I, for the life of me, can not rock 10lb weights like some of those Ironchicks do. I'm in the 3-5lb range....especially at the end of the workout because my arms are toast.

To get the greatest variety, I would chose either Have Mercy, "The Sequel" or Aero Base Builder V - The Compilation. He has this Have Mercy segmented nicely so that the source DVD & set are identified. Both are 2 hours long. I'm with V. though Zoot Challenge is my favorite. I am the only one in my group of riding friends who even likes this video.

I like Zoot, too. It's short, intense, and never boring. Have to admit, the chick in the bathing suit still makes me cringe.

I almost never look at the video. I'm too busy watching my cadence and HR. And for some reason today, the huge drops of sweat.

Thanks all, for the great replies :D ! I checked ebay - you can't really get anything cheaper than Performance/Nashbar sale prices, and I'd rather have the security of ordering from them than some yahoo on ebay, kwim.

Okay, so, now how about...

Spinervals for the dessert aisle :p :D  ?!

Coach Troy says, "If you work hard enough, you can eat what you want pal."*

I have lost 5 pounds since December training for doing these doubles - a pleasant side effect. And I eat all the time. Maybe I'd have lost more if I didn't have Klondikes in the frig.

V.

*Well actually he says something else about working hard. :p

I'd have to agree with others and say Have Mercy, although I haven't done the "Sequel" - I still need to buy it. I don't like No Slackers for some reason. Not sure why. Mental Toughness is another one that I really like (it's 90 min). There's one that should be coming out soon called the Hardcore Hundred that simulates a century ride. I think the taping was ~ 8 hours, but the final edited DVD should be maybe 6-7 hours long? That's a long time on the trainer!

So far I have taken one training spin class at the LBS but to tell you the truth I hated it. I just so want to be outside when I am on my bike. Do yall actually enjoy the riding with the tapes? Maybe I just need different motivation. I have had several people swear that 20 minutes a day on the trainer will help your ride immensely but I can't seem to make myself do it. Plus like I posted elsewhere it makes my bum hurt!

If you live in Wisconsin during the winter, you really have no choice but to ride on the trainer. I also like watching movies while I do long/easy rides. If your bum is hurting on the trainer, make sure you get out of the saddle every 10 minutes or so.

What bike do you ride? Do you have a "trainer" bike, or are you actually comfortable putting your fave road bike on the trainer? Seems like you would chew through back tires...

I'm thinking I'll be on a trainer next winter - I whimped more this winter riding that I should have and it's kicking my rear end to get back out there on the roads....

I usually put my tri bike on the trainer so I can stay comfortable on the aerobars during the winter and on longer sessions, I can relax better in the aerobars. I change out my back tire and use a cheap-o one that I got from Performance Bike (they found one in the back and I paid like $5 for it). I definitely don't use my good tires on the trainer!

Veronica

My bike goes in and out of the trainer, depending on the weather and what I need to focus on that day. I leave whatever tires happen to be on it. Right now Continental 4000s.

Seems like you would chew through back tires...My trainer eats tires like crazy! I get a big flat spot down the middle. I bought an extra low end wheel and threw on an old tire (that already had a big flat spot) and I use that on the trainer.
