I'm still quite tired so forgive me if i can't remember much or babble...
My team (canausies-a bunch of Canadians and Aussies) got together and entered a team in the Relay for life in aid of the Western Australian Cancer society. It ran from 3pm sat to 3pm sunday. I can't remember much of it, total blur i tell ya.
The only things i remember are the start where a group of drummers led the survivors & thier carers then the teams round the track. (Perry lakes stadium,400 m track now unused but home of 1962 commonwealth games). Beautiful day (compared to the previous three with pouring rain etc) and good company.
At 8pm they had a candlelight ceremony remembering us why wé were there running and walking. All i remember is the bagpiper at the end breaking the silence with Amazing grace. Not a dry eye around
(People could purchase a brown paper bag-symbolizing those lost or a white paperbag-symbolizing those who've won the fight, write a message & fill it with sand. The bags adorned the outside of the track plus many more aligned to spell the word HOPE in one section of the stands.)
Ran off to sleep from 930-140am then had the 2-4am shift with my team mate gail. From then on i was awake until the end, wandering around walking, running, eating and trying to allow my swollen feet to recover. From noon until the end we could only do 20min shifts as it was 30c with no shade nor wind..
The event raised $430000-but that was at 3pm yesterday and the Cancer Council's hoping to raise $500000.
I slept from 630pm last night until 630am this morning and going to have a nap this afternoon. Good thing i took the day off!!!
So if an event like this is in your hometown, cheer the walkers & runners on if you can!!! Our team's doing it next year.
