View Full Version : Finally fell

Well ladies its finally happened to me too. I fell over bike and all because I couldn't unclip fast enough. I was so happy that I had possibly escaped that part of new pedals.
I had unclipped my left foot at the base of my aunts driveway and was going to leave that foot unclipped and pedal up the hill. But my cleat had other ideas and I ended up clipping in again. When I got to the top I had to stop suddenly or run my bike into her cement pourch. So I grabed onto both brakes and stopped faster then I expected. At the same time I stopped, remembered oh no I'm still clipped in:eek:  . So I right as I was trying to unclip my left foot I fell over that direction right onto her concrete pad. My hip is still sore today. Other then that the bike and I are fine.
Thank you to all the ladies who have shared their stories, somehow that makes it not quite as embarressing knowing I'm not alone.

OUCH! cement+ body contact = OUCH!!! But hey, there is a good part to it... Your not really hurt, just kinda sore, you got that first fall out of the way, and you didn't do it at a busy intersectio in front of tons of people. Or worse yet- at a cycling event in front of tons of fellow cyclists! :o
Hey there is a good side to everything!
Congrats and welcome to the TIMBER club!!! Or TIMBR (Time I Munched Bike Riding):D

You aren't alone... most of us have had our falls... some like me more than others! ;)
Hope you are Ok. Make sure you check out your bike especially if you hit the handlebars etc.

They say there are two types of cyclists...
Those who have fallen/crashed
And those who are going to fall/crash
Welcome to the club

I'm a fairly new rider and I just purchased a pair of road shoes yesterday. I'm going back for some pedals and clips, but i'm still struggling with it. Are clip pedals really worth it? What are the advantages? I have not made up my mind yet, and they are on hold for me at the bike shop...so i better make up my mind soon!!! any advice will surely help....good luck and thanks

YES! they are worth it! you get more power.. you can pull up with one foot while pushing down with the other... instead of just pushing down down down down! (actually you make circles with both feet!)

I'm still on the crash waiting list... should be sometime this year statistically:rolleyes: :D I fell within the first month of having my bike... front wheels and trolley tracks are not conducive to forward movement.

What are the stats on that, anyhow? I've been clipless just shy of ten months. I nearly had my turn today, but I got my foot out just in time (phew). I was attempting a track stand at some lights, but, um, I haven't the faintest idea how to go about a track stand, so, yeah... :p

Hey TL - I think I took all your falls (you're welcome! :D ) - I was told 3 falls when you go clipless, and I took 6, so it must average out somehow - lucky you!
I now just unclip both feet whenever something looks dicey...

my understanding is that crashing is statistically every 5 yrs... I've been riding just over 4! :D
I'm hoping to mess up the statistics! ;)
Totally, absolutely, infinitely worth it.
They totally transformed my relation with cycling, made me feel one with the bike. Fantastic. And so far 18 months with pedals (first SPDs and now SPD-road) and haven't taken a fall for not unclipping in time.

If you ask me you did everything right!!! You fell on your left side - protecting the precious gears and deraillers!!:D Now that takes skill!

Sorry to hear about your fall CR - but welcome to the club. As for your clips having other ideas: if it helps any, next time rest your heel on the pedal, that way the foot can't clip back in.
as for are they worth it MH? Heckie yeah! Take your bike to a grassy area and first and just practice clipping in and out. Also, in the early stages of riding, unclip just as soon as you even THink you're going to stop, like unclip and then reach for the brake, that way you won't have that moment of panic about your feet. And don't worry it, we've all fallen, we've all been there!
TLK: ROFL on the attempting to track stand without knowing how to track stand! On Yeah - played That game before! and one of these days I Won't get unclipped in time!
CorsairMac: yup, I fell in the median, during rush hour traffic, coz I just couldn't bear the thought of falling all alone!!
