View Full Version : proper mountain bike posture?

Does anyone have a link or something that would give me a better idea of how I should properly sit on my mountain bike. I have had some lower back pain. Not bad but it is not good either. We are getting a longer seat post. It needs to be a hair longer. But I am on carbon right now and I guess you don't want to go above the mark on the post or it could bend. I am hoping that is it. But I am curious if I am positioned right?

Brandi:
You probably should spend a few dollars and get a "fitting" . Position is different from everyone depending on style of riding, fitness level etc. You may need to adjust your stem height and position, the crank arms, seat post, cleats etc. Lots of little adjustments and expert can assist you with.

I would love to do that but there is no one in a 100 miles from here that does that.

Brandi,
I'm sure you could find someone in Morro Bay or SLO (call around to the bike shops). That way you can take your bike on your next trip out and about.
Let us know what you find out!

Foothill Cyclery in SLO uses the fitkit.

That's not V. That was a pic from a tour they did last summer.
That's a good position for being off the saddle and back for descending.

They are the ones who fitted me on my first bike. That i later found out from a pro rider was to big for me and why i was having neck and shoulder problems. And te same reason my husband started repairing and building our bikes. They damaged he's disk brakes when he's bike was only a few months old. So you can see my problem here. My dh will only go there to buy supplies not for help. And when I was looking for a new bike they just wanted to sell me what was on the floor which was all to big (again). Thanks for looking for me.

Brandi are you near Santa Maria? Great bike shop there - Main Street Cycles. Scott the owner can do a fitting or recommend someone for you. It's worth the money (usually $100) especially if you are riding road v. trail.

Good heavens no! That's Jane a guide on one of our trips. She's like half my size.

I will look into the foothill shop and the santa maria one. The foothill place is fairly new not heard a lot of good things about it either.

It's in the July 2005 section. There are a lot of pictures of from our two trips mountain biking last year. No real discussion about what exactly is proper position - but LOTS of pictures.

V - you are too funny! I've seen other pics of you on your web site so I know what you think of yourself is SO not true :p I guess (referring back to the body image thread) we are all hardest on ourselves!
I do have to say that whoever that woman is has some killer arms!!!

Thanks!
I was in awe of Jane. She rode up things and down things that just made my mouth drop open. Great teacher too. I learned a lot on that trip. I want to go back to see if I can ride it better.

We had an awesome time. Umpqua is cool because you could do it with another couple, stage a car at the end of each trail and stay at one campground. I don't think you'd have to drive more than 15 miles to a trailhead.

Brandi if you and the husband are looking for a week long trip I highly recommend LAGBRAU - CHECK OUT lagbrau.COM (http://lagbrau.com). The scenery was breathtaking (much better than shown on the website). If you would like a CD of my photos, PM me your address. Also for next year check out skinnytirefestival.com (http://skinnytirefestival.com). Another totally awesome ride.
