Hello all. I am riding between 4 to 6 miles a day. Should I increase for the next week or continue just riding. I really just enjoy riding through my neighborhood. I have encountered some hills which take all my enegry. Just need some tips for a new cyclist.

When I was new to cycling, I wanted to ride more, but the legs just wouldn't let me. How do you feel after your ride? Your body will tell you when you've had too much. Welcome to TE, by the way!

You don't say a lot about yourself. (And not that you should.) Your age, general fitness etc. All of these things matter. A lot of it depends on how long it takes you to go those 4-6 miles. IF I was looking to extend my mileage, I might start by extending my time. You can always do the "same" 4 to 6 miles but just do it as a round--do it twice. I think I just got bored with my route and started extending that way. Create destinations. Ride to a park that is a little further away and create bike friendly paths to get there. No one can say, "increase by 10% every 5 days"-there are no rules like that. You just add on. Like one of the intro to biking essays they have. Put time in the saddle in.

Sorry I am 34, 60 lbs overweight with lots of back issues. Recently my physical therapist said it was more my hips so he started pulling my legs out my hips and it has made a world of difference. During the week I try to get in 30 mins of riding. On the weekends I want to do a long ride. Today I did 10 miles and it wasn't bad but I think I will stay there til I am more comfortable doing more. Out of all the exercises riding has been the most enjoyable besides 80's aerobics. But I also see my form changing in just 2 wks. I have energy which I didn't before. It might be my mind but riding has been amazing so far.

Most important to have fun! If you are already seeing positive changes in your muscles and strength, you are on the right track.
