I just have one question. Why has it taken me 55 years on this planet to discover this? Any other hot rum drinks I should know about?

Mmmmmm. Hot buttered rum. Did you make it yourself? Need to get ingredients for that to have ready for Christmas.

Very easy - it was a cold night last night so decided to try a recipe I found:
Place in bottom of mug or Irish Coffee glass:
1 pat butter (I used unsalted Kerrygold - and what IS a pat? I just put a sliver in the cup)
1 tsp Maple Syrup (recipe called for brown sugar, but I only keep grade A Maple Syrup in the house, no other sugar)
Dash of Cinnamon (recipe also suggested nutmeg or allspice)
Vanilla extract (recipe didn't suggest how much, I just put in a dash)
Pour in 2 ounces dark rum (I used 3-star Barbancourt)
Hot water (I used boiling)
Apparently there isn't a standard shot glass size, couldn't figure out how many ounces my shot glass holds so I used two shots. I've not had this drink before but it was VERY good. It didn't seem too strong and a nice balance of flavor. Very simple, very good. I think a cinnamon stick might be a nice garnish. If this winter is anything like LAST winter, I see this as a nice winter drink. Will try 1 shot next time in a smaller cup and allspice. The cinnamon was nice, though I didn't really taste it, everything blended together well.
It also was a good accompaniment to a "Once Upon a Time" marathon and making my special very low sugar dark chocolate bark as part of contribution to Thanksgiving dinner today. I think it forced me to eat more of the bark than I would have otherwise though

I see this in my future as a winter complement to Mojitos!
Wow, that sounds tasty! Have to give it a try when get our first big snowfall.

Mojitos? I will have to see what this is. I've found that I also enjoy just pouring a shot of rum over a couple ice cubes and allowing them to half melt, or in decaf coffee. This is the first liquor I've found that I actually like. I've enjoyed brandy in tea, but not any other way.
I do still enjoy a good stout, but I've found that beer interferes with my sleep for some unknown reason. Just one beer (which is all I would drink, my body is sensitive to alcohol), is enough to do it, so I've stopped drinking beer for now. Port does the same thing but to far less degree, especially if I drink it before 6pm, rum doesn't appear to cause insomnia for me at all :)

Mojitos are a little labor intensive to make. You need mint, club soda, lime juice, as well as rum. And a muddler, a little special tool to mash the mint. Perfect summer drink, though.
We started making them about 7-8 years ago, when Bacardi was a sponsor of the Tour. They had an ad where everyone was dancing around, to a very catchy tune. It got us to buy the rum! Once, when we were having mojitos in a restaurant in the Berkshires, during the Tour, we got up and started dancing on the outdoor patio. We weren't really drunk, just happy from riding all day, eating, watching the Tour.
Mojitos are wonderful, but on a hot day I like caipirinhas even more. It has to be a hot day so that the ice melts a bit, otherwise I get quite drunk ;-) You really need crushed ice, though. We never have any, and end up smashing ice cubes in a towel with a hammer, which is sort of entertaining for everyone around but messy and labor intensive and gives you lots of sharp ice shards in your drink.
I once had a really good hot chocolate drink with some kind of spirits in it, I wonder what it was.

Since I no longer work the 2-10pm shift, I have my evenings free. One thing I want to do this winter is experiment with wine and spirits (I was never much of a drinker, and know nothing). It was 25 degrees and snowing this morning, and at 8am, I had a wonderful woman come by to look at my bike for sale. (She bought it!!) I'm still cold. I think I want to try hot buttered rum. Now. Thank you.

I wonder if it was something like Bailey's? Or maybe creme de menthe? I've had both of those (not at the same time of course) in hot chocolate and both are really good. That hot buttered rum sounds good, may have to try it this winter.

I bet creme de menthe would be awesome in hot chocolate, and suspect dark rum would be as well. I've tried Bailey's a couple times and found it too sweet for me.
Yum, that hot buttered rum sounds good. Wish I had some rum in the house, but I guess I can fix that.

How did you like it? I've been told to make certain you get dark rum (not clear), as it is aged and goes better with hot drinks. I really like the 3-star (aged 4 years) Barbancourt, though was also told Appletons is also really good. I want to try the 5-start Barbancourt next (aged 7 years I think). I don't know much about wine and spirits either, but it is fun to experiment with the hot drinks in cold weather :-) What struck me about the hot buttered rum was that it was quite warming and very smooth. The rum didn't have the bite that it did in my coffee and tea experiments - though I may have either put too much - OR I needed to add just a touch of sweetening. The Grade A maple syrup seemed to go very well that I used to replace the brown sugar my recipe called for.
Roo4 - yes you can fix that

Yes it is :D How about trying it with your light rum, and then compare when you get the dark?

I don't have any rum!! I was going to ask what kind to get, so thank you for pre-emptively answering my question. As I said, I'm not much of a drinker, and I never really liked the rum and cokes of my college years, so I'm hoping my palate has matured a bit. I live near some university housing and therefore close to some liquor stores, as well.
Ugh, rum and coke from undergrad years! What were we thinking?

Anything with coke is horrible, at least that's my opinion. I got the 4 year Ruhm Barbancourt because it was highly recommended at a moderate price. Appleton is a little less expensive. I've not had it but I know people who really like it. I've never been much of a drinker either.

I pretty much forgot about it until this thread. Maybe we thought we were being classy? Mixed drinks instead of beer?

Pizza. Pizza goes nicely with Coke, but I'm guessing you meant something mixed with it.
Maybe we could start a drinking for non-drinkers club

I drank Rum and Coke in high school, and maybe a bit in college. I was not much of a drinker during this time, though. Of course, I lived in Florida, where rum was popular. Then I moved to AZ, where it was more beer. When I started working, I went through a Scotch phase, as that's what I had seen my parents drink. It kind of burned my stomach out! After that, it was wine and beer, but with no real knowledge of what was good. Then, when I was in my 30s, I had weird allergic reactions to wine, so I only drank beer or mixed drinks. Rarely, though. I started driking wine again in around 1997. We started getting more knowledgable about wine in around 2000, when we began visiting local wineries. I like a lot of the newer craft beers, too. And now I drink almost red wine exclusively, with some rosé.
I still don't drink a lot of mixed drinks, but last night DH made a cocktail recipe from Cooking Light for Thanksgiving. It was gin, Compari, and Rosé Prosecco, with simple syrup. It was fabulous, but a lot of work.

I did mean a mixed drink, but I don't consider soda of any type to be palatable. Haven't had one in at least 25 years...which means there is more for those who DO like it!
I've spent most of my life as, basically, a non-drinker. I've been known to go years between drinks. Occasionally I find something that I do like, like now but it never lasts. My body is so sensitive to alcohol to begin with, and then I start thinking about the empty calories, and then, well, I go back to tea/coffee/water until the next time. I am more likely to drink a little more in the winter. I've not been in the habit of drinking mixed drinks since my very early 20's, but am glad to have found something that helps to warm me AND doesn't appear to give me insomnia like a good craft beer does (never did like mass-produced beer). Love a good stout though, pity even one affects my sleep.

This sounds a lot like me, and I'm glad you mentioned the calories. I've been to a couple of wine tastings this past month and besides the tasting sizes being huge, and me ending up with a headache (I do wonder about some kind of allergy), I was also thinking "I don't need these extra calories".
I rarely drink soda and when I do, it's just a small amount. I won't open a can - it's too big.

There isn't anything wrong with a small drink as a treat, and hard liquor doesn't have as many calories as either wine or beer. Unless you go wild with the butter and sugar, that hot buttered rum isn't too bad in the calorie department. As far as the wine is concerned, you may be sensitive to the sulfates (assuming it was red wine). I DO drink more than I once did, over the years I've found things I enjoy, but still not much compared to others. In the winter it is usually no more than one or two a week - if what much.

Simple syrup will keep in the fridge for a very long time. You can make a quart now and it will still be fine for your mint juleps on Derby Day and your summer margaritas and mojitos. :D If it starts to crystallize, just dump it into a pan and warm it up again.
That said, I'm more likely to grind up some bar sugar and deal with the cloudiness if it's just me and DH. It only takes a couple of minutes with a mortar and pestle to grind sugar fine enough to dissolve in a cold drink. Less than that in a spice grinder, if you can get yours clean enough that you're not introducing cumin and hot pepper flavors where you don't want them. :p It's just not as pretty and crystal clear as doing it with syrup.
Traditional Italian spritz is just Campari, prosecco and club soda with a twist of lemon. Terrific summer apėritif. Campari is plenty sweet enough you don't need any extra. Or you can use tonic water in place of soda, for extra bittersweet.

My issues with wine started at a time when I was having all kinds of allergies and asthma issues. I went like 10 years without drinking it, way past the time when my allergies resolved.
However, there are wines without sulfites. I remember back in 1988, having dinner in a vegetarian restaurant, and they had organic wines, without sulfites.
I don't notice any weight gain with having one glass of red wine, most nights of the week. I have tested this numerous times, too, in my quest to figure out why I seem to gain/lose with no apparent trigger. Of course, if I started having more, or I drink a lot of beer, it does affect my weight.

I love gin but it doesn't love me back, gives me wicked stomach aches for some reason.
Crankin - I still love beer but good lord it bloats me out now. Seems to have started after menopause; so I mostly stick with really good bourbon or wine these days.

I see this in my future as a winter complement to Mojitos!
Mojitos are my all time favorite alcoholic drink.
Interesting side note, I actually will get sick before I can ever get drunk. Usually 1 mixed drink or 2 beers is my limit. The most I get is a nice warm glow, which is fine with me since my father was an alcoholic.

I don't know the specific gravity of rum without looking it up, but drink recipes will always be in fluid ounces, not ounces avoirdupois. Two fluid ounces is the same as 1/4 cup. One ounce is two tablespoons.

Shows you how much I know about drinks, I had no idea, thanks! This is very helpful. I had already figured out that there is no single shot glass measure so that was my way around it. I will have to see how close I was, but it seemed the right balance of rum to water to spices. I used unsalted butter.
I also dropped in a small cinnamon stick when I added the (very) hot water, very tasty. Very nice for a cold damp night.
