So the past few days, I've getting a harassing scam calls, a very hostile one at that.

They claim to be from Treasury Enforcement Dept and that they are taking a legal action you. They even give out their phone nymber but its "spoofed" and in reality its a number where you have to pay!!

If you get one of these calls, hang up. If you have caller ID right down the number and don't answer it the next time or the next... My scam came from 202 area Code Washington DC it says.

Please report this call to the US Dept of Treasury, Inspector General. Here is their contact information: Treasury Inspector General for Tax administration (TIGTA). 1.800.366.4484. http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/

FYI if you are being audited by State or by the IRS, they will be sending you a letter first. They do not call and make such threats.

Around there there's a scam where someone calls claiming to be from the IRS, saying you owe a huge amount in back taxes and fines, and you must immediately pay them by sending gift cards for Home Depot. I think they may be targeting immigrants.

Close, elderly, dear family friend got one of these calls asking for money to bail my BROTHER out from a Mexican jail!

Whether this is you, friends, family, arch enemy ... never, ever give or even confirm any account, financial, id information such as social security info over an inbound call, not ever. Even with caller id you do not know who the caller is. There's caller id spoofing for example.

Instead whether the caller insists they are your bank, phone company, whatevah you do not call them back on any number they give you. You call the number on your bill, statement, some authorized source for the number and ask THEM if it's a legitimate call.

That's your outbound call, you checked that the number's legit. You know who you called. You never know who is calling you.

Share this tip especially with the elderly.
