View Full Version : "Theft" was not my preferred method of culling the herd.

After 20 years of riding straight bar bikes, I decided to try a drop bar road bike. I didn't think it fit quite right, so I bought another one :o Lately I've decided that maybe I should stick with my Specialized Sirrus and sell one or both of the road bikes. Today someone stole my Sirrus. It was lunchtime, a mixed residential/commercial neighborhood, locked to a really sturdy bike rack. They even took the lock, so I don't know if the lock wasn't closed all the way, or they just happened to have bolt cutters on them.

The police don't even come to take statements anymore. They tell you to fill out the report online (that actually made me laugh).

So now I'm confused. I had been shopping for a bike, then decided to just wait until something great comes along. Don't settle. Now I'm shopping again. Thanks for "listening".

thinking there has to be better ways of making one start shopping for a bike :).....i've lost a couple of very cheaply built up commuters and that was easier to wish the new riders of them safe rides and move on to the next bike. An expensive bike would probably add a dream about slow dismemberment of the taker before my moving on though.......do you have serial number/photos etc?.....if not things like this are a good reminder to all of us to have that.

sorry and enjoy the new search!!!!!

Rebecca, at first I was impressed with your generosity in wishing the new riders safe rides, then I got to the next sentence. My wishes for them were far less charitable. And my mother showed a side of her I rarely see :D

Muirenn, the online forms are for thefts under $3000, so I guess it depends on the car. Or, if a weapon had been involved, they probably would have shown up. I really can't blame them. I think their resources are stretched thin, and the violent crime rate is embarrassing.

Oh, I wish that and a lot more for the dude who stole my namesake, Trek 420. I'm sure the 6'2" perp looked like a clown descending on my 47 cm bike. Also sure he sold it for a hit of crack. Bike theft sucks.

Have fun shopping though.

Ugh. Sorry that happened.

Semi-related rant: why in the world does Cannondale put the serial number on a removable sticker that, even if you're careful and even if a thief doesn't deliberately remove it, will come off on its own after a few thousand miles?

So sorry to read what happened...certainly not the preferred way to cull the herd. Will your insurance cover the theft?

Sorry that happened. Having to worry about bike theft is so annoying.
