Best inexpensive bike for beginners

Hi there,
Was hoping to get some help. Looking for my first road bike. Hoping not to spend a ton. Would you recommend a used bike? Any make and models that you would suggest?

+1 on the Jamis. I have the Bosa Nova from Jamis and it made me change over completely to
steel frames. Also great thought on bike fit. If you don't get a professional fit, and the bike never
seems "just right", it will potentially ruin most of the joy of riding, imho.

I also have a Jamis and have been very happy with it. A lot of bang for the buck.
