It is time to build my SS bike. This bike will work for both mtn and cross with 2 different sets of wheels. Fun!!

Must be a very early Christmas? umm 650B must be the wheel size. ??? My Litespeed used to use 650C. That's bit different than 650B... I'm bit confused. Is it more popular than 650C? I thought mtn bikers were looking at 29ers not a smaller wheel.
I must be a dinosaur cause I know nothing...

650B is in between a 29er and a traditional 26 inch mtn wheel. It's nice for people like me who feel like a 29er bike is just too dang big, the wheelbase too long for tight cornering being a primary issue.
The outside diameter of a 650 wheel with the tire on it is the same whether it is A, B or C. So 650C is a road wheel with the tire on that has the same outside diameter of a 650B mountain wheel. The tire sizes are different so the actual rim sizes are also different, the mountain rim is smaller in diameter, but the tire is bigger.
Clear as mud right?

Nice! I like the idea of two sets of wheels to turn it into two different bikes :)

Interested to hear more about the conversion to the SSCX bike. What size wheels will you use for that? 650s, I presume. Do they make many CX tires in that size?

Interesting idea--I'm curious as to how the conversion works.
I love the orange, though!

I've already tried a 700c cross wheel in there. It fits with plenty of clearance.

A-HA! And will you leave flat bars on it for cross, or switch to drops? I am intrigued to see how this will work...

I'll just leave flat bars on. The bike has a very easily adjustable drop-out, so I'm hoping that I should be able to accommodate an appropriate change in gearing between the cross set up and the mountain set up that I don't have to mess with the chain too much. That remains to be seen.
I'll use the same fork for both set-ups, a rigid carbon disc compatible.
The other thing I'm trying to figure out is bar ends. I like having bar ends for mtn biking especially SS. But you can't have them if you're cross racing. I still have to look into my options there.

Oooh, Soma! I can't wait to see it built up.
