yeah...hopefully the federal judge that ruled on it will do that even if the 10th circuit gives a stay.

The appeals judges, Robert E. Bacharach and Jerome A. Holmes, fast-tracked Utah's appeal, but they said they wouldn't stop the marriages in the meantime, writing that the state would have a tough time proving that letting the marriages go ahead would cause "irreparable harm" or that it had a good shot at winning its appeal.

Someone told me that fast-tracking the appeal could mean it will be heard in a matter of weeks, rather than months.

A short time for the 10th should be a few months with no party asking for an extension and then the time for oral augments and the written decisions. Thankfully the request for a stay to the Supreme Court can be decided by Sotomayor who is the Justice assigned to the 10th.

Yeah, it kinda was tough when our marriage was on verge of being voided by prop 8. I don't recommend this but I think it made us stronger. So I'm enjoying the chaos.

We got to watch the lawyers arguing the prop 8 case in San Francisco Federal court before it went to the Supremes. They were/are brilliant, like verbal chess or tennis. If you get a chance to see "8, the play" live or watch online, do.

I got my own miniature prop 8 trial over my unemployment bennies which was fun, if you think law is fun.

All counties now issuing licenses! Maybe they hired temps while clerks take a vacay? :p Congratulations, Utah!

rebeccaC
12-27-2013, 05:26 PM
Nope I can't forgive.

When I saw the LDS Church succeeding in getting California's Proposition 8 on the ballot and then the way they funded getting it passed, I couldn’t think of a stronger example of the need for separation of church and state.

Had a good conversation with some friends one night about teen homelessness and suicide in Utah and parents abandoning said teens for homophobic reason’s given to them by the LDS in their churches through anti-gay video’s, letters read from the churches leaders and strong fundraising for initiatives like Prop 8. If they could only see compassion and caring becoming real when they recognize a shared humanity instead of the condemnation that leads to their fear.
As I already wrote a marriage license with Provo, Utah on it makes a huge smile go across my face…and prayers for the forgiveness that leads to everyone opening their hearts!…..that's a good personal practice in any case :)

This thread gave me the biggest, happiest smile I've had in a long time :):) Congrats to all who have married (and to all those who hope to, I wish you well).

I live in the Australian Capital Territory where gay marriage was legal for about 6 days before the law was overturned by the High Court of Australia (equivalent roughly to your Supreme). It was wonderful for a few days to see the photos of the happy couples in the newspaper but very sad that their marriages now have no legal standing.

I thought the wedding attire was pretty fun in its wild diversity. I especially liked the photo of the woman in a wedding gown embracing the woman in a black hoodie. Since it was so close to Christmas, I had a giggle about "...Don we now our gay apparel..." For the occasion, what else could anyone dream of wearing?!

For the occasion, what else could anyone dream of wearing?!

We wore t-shirts and jeans. Everyone wore jeans; minister, our witness. We'd been on the way to Lowe's to get a ladder when the minister called and said "I can fit you in between 3-5pm if you can get over here". Married in our church during the window before prop 8.

Maybe a do over because Knott looks fantastic in a dress. In anything really :)

To couples married in Utah from one of the couples married in CA before prop 8; keep calm, you're still married. You get the thrill of filing taxes jointly, shopping for a tandem .... it'll all work out in the lower courts there I think.

And to those in Utah who were planning to get married today don't worry. There's CA and WA which have great cycling and food, just sayin' and however many other states we're up to and soon Illinois I think? I've lost track. Think it's 17 and I can never remember it that's with or without DC.

I saw them at the Acme Comedy Theatre when they did a show here in LA….funny stuff :)

Wondering why Sotomayor let it go to the entire court????….You know the Utah attorney general will challenge the validity of the licenses granted but hopefully the 10th circuit will resolve the issue of the stay in our favor to make that a non-issue soon. The marriages are official for Federal issues regardless of what the state does.

Oklahoma's gay marriage ban was also ruled unconstitutional by another federal judge. He did order a stay until the 10th circuit hears the case. I think Kansas is the last state in the 10th still with a ban. What a nice change from when a lot of the bans took place in the early to mid 2000's.

Even with the shift in public opinion and growing acceptance there are those who have heard nothing but how intrinsically morally evil it is during the attempts for the state constitutional bans and now in their churches, communities and from their politicians. Unfortunately, even with positive judicial rulings, we will still hear how gay marriage is a threat to children, family, heterosexual marriage, faith and freedom from those whose intolerance is greater than their caring/compassion. I put my faith and hope in generational changing attitudes. In looking at other civil rights movements I see developments in society and culture mattering more than those in jurisprudence.

I do see one large positive with the judicial rulings that have come out in the recent past. I was in my late teens when the state constitutional bans started. I’m just glad other teens don’t have to deal with those feelings mixed in with understanding their sexuality.

And today Kentucky joined the party, partially! A fed judge has said that the state has to recognize all marriages legally performed in other places. The state doesn't have to allow same-sex marriages to be performed here, at least not yet, but it's a huge step, completely out of the blue.

It's more than a bit sad that there's been no word from the governor or the AG (both democrats) on if the state will appeal. While the governor is in his final term and swears he's never running for office again, his son is a candidate for AG, and the current AG might run for governor, so they're both likely a bit scared. A recent poll found that 65% of Kentuckians support our anti-marriage amendment, after all. Pretty major move from when it passed 75% to 25% in 2004, however....

Alaska was the first state to have a constitutional ban. History hasn’t judged well those who are the last to turn off the lights of discrimination. My money would be on Alabama though.....which was also the last state to end laws against interracial marriage.

I think it was a couple of months after the end of the civil war when it took a Union General and his troops to convince Texas to free slaves.

The problem with Texas and also Louisiana and Mississippi may be that they are in the very conservative 5th circuit court of appeals which hasn't ruled yet on the Texas ban.

Thought it was pretty ironic.

We're such bumpkins in the US.

We really are, kind of like an opinionated muscular adolescent, we know everything and have no problem beating you up if you disagree!

I sat down and cried when I heard, never thought I'd see this day.

I am so thrilled! As someone from the first country to legalize same-sex marriage, I'm beyond excited that my adopted country now allows the same.

This is also the week of the Episcopal Church General Convention - which is being held in Salt Lake City this time around. I've been wondering what the rather more conservative Mormons are making of all of us gathered there  Very curious to hear what our priest has to say/if she says anything about that when she returns!

Several weeks ago I marched in the "Episcopal Diocese" section of our local Pride Parade (which was MASSIVE). It was so good to see all of the young people there - both in the parade and watching/cheering. Things have indeed changed from when I was their age, and that was very good to see!

Somehow we ended up on the British Consulate float at the Pride parade last night. Their theme was "Love Is Great"

Good on the 5 justices.

Good on all the people who struggled, marched, petitioned, talked and came out, picketed, fund raised, got out the vote, campaigned .... I had a coworker say to me "oh, that's what the government did to us". Nope, we all struggled and won this. I even had my own tiny case with CA unemployment.

Thank you everyone for the well wishes. Obviously after 16 years together this doesn't change our commitment to each other, but it was important to us to have the legal recognition, especially now that we're getting older.

Just getting back home after a Pride weekend of the celebration of love, caring and solidarity I see "A man reaps what he sows" was tweeted by strongly anti-lgbt Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick one hour after 50 people were killed in the Orlando lgbt nightclub. My spirit breaks when I see this kind of righteousness that seeks to 'deny, demean and destroy anyone not part of a persons authoritarian ideology' whether that comes from a hateful group or especially U.S. politicians.

Why are some people so filled with righteousness that they could say something so disturbingly hateful as Patrick did? Hate is a poison and in this case also undermines a precious value: freedom to just BE who you are.

Alex shared 1 John 2:9….”whoever says they are in the light and hates their brother or sister is still in darkness” as I was upset about all this. I do indeed love her…..

I was proud that todays parade was also saying to the face of bigotry and fear….we are here to say we will not shrink away, we will not be stuck in our homes because of senseless violence, we are out here to march, to celebrate our caring for one another, to show solidarity and to mourn those lives lost in Orlando. With a heavier heart I am Proud and Gay meant even more to me this year.

after a little over a month of planning, family and friends watched and celebrated Alexandra’s and my marriage last Saturday in Gordes. We’re staying in France this week and then traveling back home to the new journey of sharing our lives together.

btw….thinking I’m not going to be on the net much for a while :)
