My mom is 85 and still very much alive and kicking. She's been an activist and writer most of her life. She's lived a lot of history ( so have I by default) For example, my older siblings went to the first integrated preschool in the US. She was very much in the forefront of the lesbian movement in Sonoma County in the 70s, and more. I was inspired to make a blog for her, as a venue to for her stuff and a new project.

Here it is. :-)

You're blessed lrulan to have a mother at the forefront and wanting to share stories..to the world on what she thinks, has experienced.

I'm sure she's thrilled to have blog venue. Anyone is who naturally enjoys sharing stories in writing.

I just added an entry, a Peace March memoir that goes back to the fifties. Do you gals want me to announce when I put up something interesting?

oh, she is really excited about it. She was really fascinated by margaretandhelen. As soon as I brought up the idea a couple of months ago, she created a folder on her desktop and has been putting things into it.

I love this! Are you talking about the co-op preschool that was at SRJC? That was integrated and my parents were involved in starting it. All of us kids went there including my brother and my sister, Duck on Wheels of this forum.

Irulan, did we go to pre-school with you? :)

My Mom was in the first class to graduate Sonoma State University. I remember her going to classes when they held them in hotel rooms, no university yet and barely any buildings. She and my Dad were very active in the Peace and civil rights movements in Northern California. They were honored by the ACLU before Dad passed. Mom at 92 still attends a peace vigil every week and is an activist.

I just sent her the link. I recognize some of the names and I'm sure she knows a lot of your mom's friends. Willing to bet your mom knows or knew of my parents.

Oh, no, - not in CA. This would have been an integrated preschool in Chicago, in the 50's. Hyde Park -Kenwood, near the U of C, was one of the first "integrated neighborhoods' in the nation, according to what I know, where middle class black and white families lived side by side.

I asked my mom just how many pieces she has. "copius amounts' was the answer. I think I have it down to a system. All I"m doing is pasting things in, formatting them, proofing for typos and scheduling them to go out. I have at least 8 things in the pipe already. I don't think it's going to be too much work. I'm moderating comments, which only takes a sec.

OK, according to my Mom our Mom's might not know each other. Alice Neel sounds familiar to me somehow.

JJ Wilson has met my siblings. My brother taught at Sonoma State. My sister is a professor but in Norway and has been to at least one event at her home.

I found this photo today. It's totally worth sharing. I put it with her memoir, "50 years of peace marches"

as an aside, she just gave me a book of articles/essays/memoirs shes written on race, integration, related politics, white privelege etc,. These are all based in the area of Chicago that was up for "urban renewal", where she lived, with the melding of white and black middle class. I am delighted that I can scan the text from xeroxes right into Word for editing. So stay tuned. It's very interesting stuff.

...like I said, really cool stuff.
Back in 1953, her newspaper did a small PR ad showing a group of children of different colors playing together and talking about "let's all get along". The paper got hate mail calling them "commie" and "red"....
Here is the latest blog entry about it.
