Too bad it's not in Houston again. DH just got his shop running again after a year sabbatical. Of course, there may be plans I don't know about...

I'm planning to go. I've got this "thing" about getting a steel bike, possibly a Gunnar. They're supposed to be there, per their web site. Plus I want to see bikes from Vanilla, Landshark, Waterford, ... um, actually just about every other builder too. Should be fun.

eeeeewwwww ! :D

Here are the show hours from the website:

• Friday - Noon to 6 PM, reception at 7 PM
• Saturday -10 AM to 6 PM, Seminars all day at various times
• Sunday - 10 AM to 5 PM, Awards presentation at 3 PM

When are you folks planning to go?

At the moment it looks like Sunday might be out for me - I might have to travel for work that day.

I'm thinking Saturday, Sunday I have the local Cindy ride.

SadieKate
02-18-2006, 12:37 PM
I think we were planning Saturday also because we had originally been planning on the Tour of the Unknown Valley on Sunday.

Still have to figure out what to do that day. I need one last big-ish ride before Solvang (my only hope of keeping up with yellow and Killer Bea.

Cool! You have egg-cellent taste - I still drool over Magpie's lugged stem. :pWhy thank you, ma'am. I love spending other people's money.;)

Here's our plan:

Amtrak is supposed to deliver us to the Diridon (or as snap pronounces it, the Deerdawn:p ) Transit Center at 8:50. If we're on time we should be able to grab a VTA bus to the convention center for a 9:12 am delivery. We'll have to wait 30 mins if Amtrak is late.

The show doesn't open until 10. We have not pre-purchased tickets but I'm not going to stress about it.

Is there a coffee shop or good hang-out spot somewhere nearby? Or is anyone else arriving early? Perhaps the Jo and Lee Mobile (aka the Elementobile)? :D

jobob
02-27-2006, 04:14 PM
We'll be there, would you like to head out for breakfast someplace ? We could pick you up at the Amtrak station.

Snap, Kim, are either of you interested in a pre-show breakfast in San Jose, perchance? Anyone else?

We'll take the subaru instead of the element, the subaru is much better for passengers.

Just curious, do you have to take such an early train?
(Or is the schedule such that the early train is the only one, or the only practical one?)

- Jo "too lazy to look up the schedule herself" bob

SadieKate
02-27-2006, 04:31 PM
The next unreserved train (unreserved gives us flexibility for return trips, exchanges, etc.) wouldn't arrive until 10:50. Therefore, the only practical one. Normally, this schedule wouldn't be a big deal but we're on our Winter schedule (as in hard to wake up in the dark unless your spouse is using unladylike 4-letter words).

I'm sure that we can entertain ourselves if everyone wants to sleep in (and I can't blame them).

We'll probably have coffee and a pasty with us on the train because I have to have calories by 8 or so. But, what's another another pastry among friends? Or call it brunch and I could probably last until late in the afternoon for lunch. You'll always know when I need to be fed because I get crabby. Ok, feel free to say "Now how would we tell that!?"

You pretty much can't swing a cat, dead or otherwise, without hitting a restaurant in downtown San Jose. Here are a few that serve breakfast:

City Bar and Grill at the Hilton
Arcadia at the Marriott
Original Joes
Il Fornaio
Cafe Primo
Peggy Sue's

Don't know what the food or prices are like though......I've only had dinner at Original Joes.

... because I get crabby. Now how would we tell that!?

Second breakfast would be OK with me, or lunch, or both. I haven't thought about my arrival time, but I'm very lazy this time of year - 10:30 or 11:00 sounds doable.

The Amtrak station is near the HP Pavillion, and there are lots of places to eat, especially east of there.

Peggy Sue's on Park Ave. seems to have a good breakfast menu, if you're OK with the 50's kitsch.

Heh, it occurred to me to see if we could find a place that's close to the convention center, and it looks like Park Ave (where Peggy Sue's is loacated) is only a couple of blocks away :)

The Plan of the Moment is to meet at Peggy Sue's, 183 Park Ave in San Jose, at ~ 9:30 on Saturday.

If the Amtrak is on time (i.e. if h*ll freezes over) :D then we might be a little bit earlier than that.

Since it's close to the convention center you can park there or at one of the other nearby lots. Here's a nifty interactive map of the parking lots in that vicinity.

http://www.sjdowntownparking.com/parking_map.php

According to Peggy Sue's website, it's located in the same building as the Park Ave garage, and they validate on weekends (probably only for a short length of time, but might be worth looking into).

Okey-dokey! Tour Guide Jobob is putting together an egg-zellent plan! Now, the question is whether it is enough to tempt snap and kim.

Thank, Jo. I'm off to round up a bunch of alarm clocks for strategic placement.

How about your very own Idaho Spud Bar?:p

The popular Idaho Spud Bar is a wonderful combination of a light cocoa flavored marshmallow center drenched with a dark chocolate coating and then sprinkled with coconut (Sorry, no potato!). The potato shape and unique blend of ingredients appeals to both young and old, making the "Idaho Spud" one of the top hundred selling candy bars in the Northwest, and is Idaho Candy Company's best selling bar. The Idaho Spud Bar has been a favorite since it was first manufactured in 1918.www.idahospud.com

Alas, marshmallow and coconut count among the very few food-like items that I don't particularly like (although the dark chocolate could make up for that).

Tell you what, you can give mine to the Birthday Girl.

I'm not a big marshmallow fan either. That's why Bubba gets all the Peeps.

Some scofflaw photographers have posted their pics from the show. This thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=178620) from bikeforums has some good links (you need to scroll through the postings) and some of the links have good links too.

Anyone seen any other photos posted from the show, or by chance, want to post theirs anonymously (we don't want the bike show police coming after you) :p ?

Snapdragen and I wandered about in a pretty bike-induced haze, and then we noticed that there were dozens of people taking pictures so we surreptitiously pulled out our own little digicams and started snapping away. We felt so naughty ! :D

Snap muttered "just you wait, I'll be the only one here to get nailed for taking photos".

As it turned out, neither of us were chastised by the photo police, but my picutures came out terrrible. :p

Hopefully snap had better luck?

It was a great show, so many pretty bikes, some with unusual designs, and some soul-satisfying classics.

Nice job, Snap! Thanks for sharing! There are some very interesting pictures! (Some pretty weird bikes there!)

Yes, pictures were not supposed to be taken. So Thom didn't bring his camera gear. Who wants to lug pounds of unused gear?

Apparently on Saturday they decided to relax the rules. Kind of annoying. But it meant we didn't have to spend hours wading through the shots and putting them up on the web.

Was there some rule about not taking pictures? Yes and no.

Yes, in that people who attended the show on Friday reported that people with cameras were told they were not allowed to take photos, and that there was an "official" photographer hired to take photos.

Now, mind you, there was absolutely nothing on the website that said anything about a no photo policy. People on the various email lists (iBob, Rivendell, Framemakers, to name a few) were calling this BS and announced their intentions to bring their cameras on Saturday & Sunday. ( Just my 2 cents, it's one thing if the "no photo" policy was spelled out on the website and on other promotional materials, but it wasn't - people found out about it after they paid their admission and entered the exhibit space. Pretty slimey, IMO).

I brought my little digital camera fully expecting not to be able to use it, but it weighs very little so it would have been no big deal either way for me - except for the principle, of course.

Either there were some confrontations at the show on Saturday, or the organizer wisely backed down, because by mid-morning on Saturday there were cameras a-plenty.

It's too bad that Thom didn't bring his camera, he would have taken some great photos. But since as of Friday evening it seemed like he wouldn't have been able to take photos at all, it's understandable that he didn't bring his gear along.

Just cruising around on eBay, snooping around. Last time I did that I ended up with pink disk rims.

Chris Kelly has a singlespeed cruiser, his Hoop T, on there. Bubba was already to buy but it's too small. Darn but good. We have bike storage problems as it is.
