Oh my. You just reminded me of the days when big hair was the style on Long Island. Back in the late '80s, I was at this awful bar for my sister's bachelorette party, and I went into the ladies' room. And everyone else in there had FULL SIZE cans of Aqua Net in their (huge) purses so they could keep their hair big all night long.

But no, they were not trying to get closer to God with their stiff big hair.
