Wouldn't it be fun to show some summer piccys?
It doesn't matter if it's road, mtb or just plain fun ride photos ;-)
Let's begin

We've been on a 15 mile round trip today around two different Iakes and in several forests.
We rode early in the morning.
My Titus Rockstar is a fantastic bike in hilly terrain ;)
We met some very curious animals, who needed a cuddle or two, awww.

Great photos.
May I suggest: Create a blog where you can pile in more photos, with also text to explain what area a series of photos are depicting and occasionally just send us a link to just a few favourite ones?

This year I started carrying a camera in my handlebar bag to share images of some of my rides on the ride reports forum of another bike site. It would be interesting to have one here, perhaps this thread, to see the areas we all ride in. My first photo post on this site was a ride in Joshua Tree National Park. Here are two other of the favorite areas that I’ve ridden in so far this year.
My usual weekend rides are in the Santa Monica Mountains. First are some from those rides.
A little over half way up Topanga Canyon road I always smile when I see this.

Beautiful pictures thus far! I rode up to New Buffalo, MI. It is a normal route for me but there were two detours that would have added over 13 miles to my route and would have put me crossing a very busy road in rush hour without a ride. I eventually called the SAG team. Still got about 42 miles in.

Wow Rebecca C those are fabulous photos! And that's a pricey camera, I'd be afraid to take it on a bike. Gorgeous countryside.
Colorisnt, I have a photo of that same lighthouse in New Buffalo!
I call this tree the Voodoo Tree for obvious reasons. It was from an early spring ride along the Huron River in Ann Arbor.

Awesomesauce! I will have to follow your blog on RSS. I love Michigan and have been going up to New Buffalo for Redamacks and Oinks since I was an infant. It's a short drive. Back in the day, there wasn't much there but it's definitely a Chicago hotspot now. Michigan, in general, is an amazing state for cycling and probably my favorite state of all - cycling, beaches, hiking, camping, and WINE all in one state!
I will have to keep checking on here and updating. Bringing my DSLR up to Ottawa on my ride to Gatineau and back for sure. Riding my bike up there made me so very happy. I felt empowered. I'd take that over an expensive beach vacation any day.

I agree with everyone else about RebeccaC's photos -- looks like a professional photographer. Wow!
Mine aren't nearly so good, but here are a handful from our "urban adventures" here in the KC area. We've been riding everywhere!
After a grocery store run, we determined that we can bring home a 12-pack of double-roll Charmin in our two backpacks. :D

KC looks fun :) How big is that park? At some point this summer, I would like to ride in Forest Park in STL but we'll see if anyone dares come with me. I'm not gonna do it alone.
I am getting all prepared for my Canadian bike adventure. Beginning Sunday, I am driving through Canada. Stopping in Ottawa to do some work and ride my bike. I mapped out a "safe" route according to the Ottawa bike map to get me to a shop in Gatineau. It's right off the path that runs along the river and will allow me to be able to say "I rode my bike to Quebec and bought xyz". I'd love to get a cool jersey while up there. It's no big achievement with me being behind the Rideau Centre for my time there but it will SOUND important. Small victories.

This is my second favorite spot, that's a killer trout stream. Sadly it's privately owned so you can't fish it at all, but there are a few places you can stop and see them hanging out around the bridges. So neat!16392

The park with the art is Leawood City Park and according to the website is 66 acres (http://www.leawood.org/parks/citypark.aspxa), but riding the trails through there was just a small bit of our ride, which started and ended on roads and in the middle included a long trail section through several parks. We've been really pleased with all the paved bike trails here, some many miles in length.

Yesterday we rode part of the Katy Trail, from Sedalia, MO to Windsor, MO and back. About 43 miles round trip as we did a little extra riding around Windsor. It was our first time on the Katy, and we had a blast. If you'd like to see a slide show of our photos, I've put them up on Photobucket here:

Looks like a fun day trip! There's so much to explore out there - all the history in the towns, the trail history, nature, scenery - A friend from work rode part of the Katy several months ago. She started at Sedalia and went east, I think. They stayed at B&B's and spent a lot of time exploring the towns. I've never been, but it sounds awesome.
So how was the trail for riding? We seldom ride anything but pavement, but I've heard the Katy is pretty nice.

We are mostly pavement riders too, but we rode our mountain bikes, so it was fine and quite comfy to ride on. Very finely packed limestone. Saw at least a couple of people riding what looked like road bikes -- probably more of the cyclocross variety with slightly wider tires. Would not want to ride a 23c-25c tire on it. We saw a couple of recumbents but mostly mountain bikes. It was a very quiet day on the trail, being mid-week. We probably only saw about 10 other cyclists in our five miles total on the trail (including stops).
We're hoping to ride the entire trail eventually -- probably in the fall, though. The hottest part of summer is upon us, and there are plenty of areas with limited or no shade. We will probably plan on a credit card tour and stay in hotels/b&bs. We did pass one guy riding a full-loaded mountain bike (tent, etc) and saw a couple of other loaded bikes.

DH and I did an end to end tour of the Katy in September of 2011. Some sections are better than others, as are the towns along the way. I liked Rocheport and Hermann. Clinton, Sedalia and Augusta were pretty meh to, well, god awful. If I had to do it over again....I wouldn't. I hate to say that because I know a lot of people who really love the Katy. We were decidedly underwelmed. Now, if I just rode a section here and a section there, I'd probably like it, but a weeklong trip was way too much for us.

Wow, that's interesting, indy. I have been reading a blog/report (mostly photos, some text) of a couple who did the entire thing in six days and absolutely loved it -- so much that they went back and did it again. I'm curious what you didn't like about it. I need to be prepared since we're currently thinking about doing the entire thing.
Here's the couple's report I mentioned in case you'd like to compare to your experience:

I have only read their 2010 report so far; have not read the 2011 one.
Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer!

That's funny! That's the very same blog that made me want to ride the Katy Trail. They make a compelling case for it. We even used the same tour company to arrange all the details and transport our bags from town to town.
I don't want to dissaude you from doing it necessarily. Different strokes for different folks, right? We may have just been unlucky. The week we did it was unseasonably chilly for one, and we had one full day of rain (our first), which didn't get us off on the right foot. It was rainy the day we arrived in Clinton, too. Our hotel was next to nothing but a Walmart, so that didn't help either. We made the mistake of starting on a Sunday and that really impacted our dining experience in several towns. We stayed in Sedalia on a Sunday and very little was open. We ended up eating at some greasy hamburger place. Rocheport was our next stop. Rochport itself is lovely and our B&B was one of the nicest places we've ever stayed. But guess what? Monday is the day that every restaurant in town is closed, as are the antique shops. Again, we ate at some greasy spoon that stopped serving at 5--far earlier than we wanted to eat. No one bothered to tell us that the B&B could have us made a nice dinner--with adequate notice. The ride out of Sedalia is arguably the prettiest stretch, and we had lovely weather for it, which was nice. At Jefferson City, we got yelled at by the B&B owner for arriving a bit early. And when I say yelled, I mean truly chewed out. I felt bad for being early, but quite honestly, I lost track as to which place had a check-in time of 4 versus 3, but I think he could have handled it more politely. At least we had a decent dinner in Jefferson City. Our next stop was Hermann and that was a nice stop, too. Then we hit Augusta, which was about the most god awful place we've ever stayed. The B&B was fine, but the town was just awful. In looking for someplace to eat (and there weren't many choices), I read a number of reviews that indicated that the locals are extremely hostile to cyclists. We ended up at a brewery that stops serving food at 5--yet another early dinner. The ride out of Augusta is very pretty, but then you hit the outskirts of St. Charles that is essentially a smelly industrial area. St. Charles was nice though.
Beyond the towns, the trail is pretty monotonous. You see the same canopy of trees, the same aging bridges over creeks, the same lazy river over and over again. Are there pretty stretches? For sure, but not enough to fill six days of riding. There's also a hostile vibe in some areas with the adjacent landowners. Lots of No trespassing, Beware of Dog, Keep Out types signs--on properties I would otherwise have NO desire to enter onto. Rundown, ramshackle, boarded up, junk in the yard; you get the drift. Add that to the economic depression that was plain to see in many of the towns, and it just made for a less than positive experience.
My husband and I have travelled to some truly lovely places in the US, and while we don't need to have our socks blown off on every trip, this just didn't cut it for us. We aren't posh, impossible-to-please people either, but a lot of what we saw was just depressingly rundown. Did we have fun at times? Sure, but I can easily think of any number of places I would have rather spent a week of my life.

Thanks so much for the feedback, Indy. Much appreciated. I totally get the Sunday/Monday thing after we did a day trip to Weston, MO recently on a Monday to find pretty much the entire town closed on Mondays. Only three restaurants (two of which were bars) open for lunch in the entire town and all the shops closed. I guess they're busy on weekends with tourists so close up on Mondays. We'd probably try to start our tour on a Tuesday, with that in mind.
Could you please PM me (if you don't want to post it here) with the name of the B&B where you were chewed out? That's just ridiculous! We've stayed at quite a few B&Bs when we've been bike touring, and all have been incredibly accommodating. Definitely want to avoid that one.
I've sent your post on to my DH just so he is aware of some of the potential downsides. I think poor weather makes everything look a bit worse in general, including one's outlook (certainly does for me anyway), so we will try to plan for a time of typically good weather...however, I know Mother Nature cannot be predicted with anything approaching 100% accuracy!
I'm sorry your tour wasn't a more pleasant experience overall, but it sounds like there were some very nice moments.
Thanks again for the info!

We're off on a 10 day moto trip next week. I'll try to get some pics up, but I'm not sure if I can link them on TE via mobile. I usually do that whole photobucket thing to link pics. Maybe I can link directly from Facebook...?

Big Sur to Carmel Ca. over an extended July 4th weekend ride on the Pacific Coast Highway 1. Great views and beaches and an awesome mission in Carmel.
Oh, nice! :)
Pfeiffer Beach and Pt Lobos are two of my favoritest places on earth. I really enjoy the ride to Pfeiffer Beach from Big Sur state park on my bike. And that's Pt Lobos in the background of my avatar pic. :)

I used to go to Copenhagen a lot for work (Hørsholm, to be exact) and I visited Dyrehaven a few times on foot. I intended to rent a bike at some point but, alas, the subsidiary in DK closed before I managed to do so.

We just returned from two weeks in New Mexico and did some great cycling while there (in addition to excellent hikes). We took our Jamis mountain bikes rather than roadies as we figured our rides would be more urban and/or on unpaved trails in this part of the country. I've included links to some of our photos from the trip below. In all cases, the guest password is TeamEstrogen. Please let me know if it doesn't work.
We spent a week in Albuquerque where we were very impressed with the cycling infrastructure -- bike lanes and paths just about everywhere. Being a big city, there is a lot of traffic, but we only rarely had to ride on a road without a bike lane, and we used the Albuquerque bike map to determine our best (and worst) routes. The biggest downside of the riding here was goatheads -- oh my! We'd never experienced such a thing, having done most of our riding east of the Mississippi, but we quickly got an education when I got my first flat after one day of riding (on pavement -- did not expect that). I got more flats than DH, and after the first one, we went and bought tire liners and additional tubes. Still got a couple of flats even with the liners. And DH picked numerous goatheads out of our tires nightly before they could cause us to flat. He got very good at changing tires quickly.
Here are photos from our favorite place to ride in Albuquerque, the Paseo del Bosque trail: Paseo del Bosque trail ride photos (http://s816.photobucket.com/user/emilys7atgmaildotcom/library/Facebook/Long%20Bike%20Ride%20on%20Paseo%20del%20Bosque%20Trail)
One day we took the bike-friendly Rail Runner train up to Santa Fe and rode the wonderful Santa Fe Rail-Trail there. What a lovely trail. Once you get south of town, it goes from pavement to an unpaved surface but is not technical, which was perfect for us, since we really haven't done much technical MTBing at all. Since we're road cyclists primarily, we prefer swoopy, fast riding to tight turns, roots, and rocks.
Links to these photos: Santa Fe Rail Trail Ride (http://s816.photobucket.com/user/emilys7atgmaildotcom/library/Facebook/Mountain%20Biking%20in%20Santa%20Fe)
Next, we headed to Taos for six days. We didn't care for the West Rim Trail at the Rio Grande Gorge as it was much rockier than expected, so we turned around after the first couple of miles. We later tried and much preferred the Rift Valley Trail at the Taos Valley Overlook area. It was an easy to moderate single-track trail. Had to walk a few times for short distances, but for the most part, it was doable for beginners like ourselves, and we got a good workout. Scenery was gorgeous too.
Photos here: Taos Valley Overlook Mountain Bike Ride (http://s816.photobucket.com/user/emilys7atgmaildotcom/library/Facebook/Taos%20Valley%20Overlook%20Mountain%20Bike%20Ride?sort=2&page=1)
The urban cycling infrastructure wasn't too good in Taos and traffic was heavy, so we didn't ride on the roads there. Loved a lot of things about Taos, but Albuquerque was better for in-town riding.

After doing a long organized ride the previous Sat. (with lots of other riders) I needed to get back to riding on the quiet roads of the Santa Ynez valley that I’ve come to enjoy exploring and training on this year. This route has long climbs and incredible views. When I stopped at the ranger station for some water a ranger said there can be incredibly beautiful fields of poppies and lupines in the spring. Next year!!
Figueroa Mountain and Happy Canyon roads, starting and finishing in Los Olivos Ca.

Emily, so glad you enjoyed your trip. I need to remember to look at your pictures on my home computer. Photobucket is an off-limits site at work.
Rebecca, again, your photos are outstanding!
@mzone, tell me more about the Northwest Tour. I've looked at the TCBA site, but there's not a ton of info available on the routes? It sounds like the rides are hilly? How hilly would you say? How was the support and the camping? Are most of the riders members of TCBA or are there some outsiders as well?
Before getting married, I did a couple of weeklong tours in Tennessee similar to the Northwest Tour and would really like to do something like that again if I can talk my husband into it. I love how little you have to actually worry about on a tour like that. It was surprisingly relaxing.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

Indy, the NW tour has some good climbs on each route. I don't consider myself a good climber by any means, but I was able to struggle up the big ones without getting off and walking (even if i was going 4mph at some points!). If I remember correctly, there were 3 route length options each day, so you could choose your experience.
The campground is nice - they have a pool and a small store and keep things clean. The food was fine. The TCBA folks were great. It's the same club which puts on the DALMAC, so they know what works. I'm not sure what the ratio was of their membership vs other riders, but me and and my friends are not members.
This was my first multi-day tour, and it was nice to have that experience without having to pack up gear each morning and set up camp each night. The ride was opened up to 300 riders this year, and it sold out in 2 days!

Thanks, mzone. I really like that there are multiple routes each day. We'll have to give it some serious thought!
My husband and I finished up our fourth and last segment of the transamerica this summer. We started in Florence Oregon and ended in Yorktown Virginia. So many wonderful and beautiful experiences. The tough times are quickly dissipating and I'm looking forward to our next tour. We were unsupported so I depended on my dh when the going got rough. I'll try to load a few pics of our trip.1656116562165631656416565

My son and I had a great time on Ragbrai this year. Last year I did it by myself so it was fun to have DS along!
Weather was very nice -mostly in the 80's after last year's 100's.
The day before Des Moines stop it was estimated to have 35,000 bikers on the road.
Ragbrai is indeed a spectacle, to see and experience.
Milage was much lower than last year, so I enjoyed Iowa hills, corn, soybeans, food, bicyclists and Iowa folks more than ever.
Amazing how that many bicyclist can coexist on one road.

cosc....your transamerica must have been an incredible journey!! I'm so envious!! Did you by chance do a blog of the ride that you want to share?
and you and goldfinch are making me want to do ragbrai again!
We started a journal but I was unable to keep it updated. Finding time, energy and internet access just proved too much. We might finish it later. Of course we have many pics and a diary for each day. Some days are written, while other days we just voice recorded about our day.
The beginning of our journey is on Crazyguyonabike. The journal name is "Celebrate 40 tour." We rode 2 to 3 weeks for 4 summer segments to complete this tour.
My husband is a farmer so he would have to come home and combine wheat each summer.
The tour would of been easier and cheaper to accomplish in a solid block of time, but sometimes you have to do it the hard way.
Training was mostly done on the tour since SD winter and early spring is not outdoor training weather. I don't have a lot of time to train in the school year anyway.
Anyone can accomplish a cross-country tour if I can.
The next one I'm hoping we'll be able to finish in one block of time.
Your California pics were amazing, Rebecca.

Well... technically this wasn't a bike ride... but we wanted to get out of Dodge as it were, because yesterday there was a big parade that goes down one street away from us. The parade itself is not the issue, but they don't adequately divert traffic, so everyone that usually uses the 4 lane arterial tries to divert down our little essentially one lane residential street... Over the years we've seen lots of stupid stuff (like the person who drove down the sidewalk...) and had our car hit. As long as we were going to drive somewhere we decided to take a hike. We went to Mount Defiance, in the Alpine Lakes region (Snoqualamie Pass)

Deborajen, you just have to get inventive (http://inhabitat.com/transportation-tuesday-the-diy-floating-water-bike/) :)
Whidbey is a bigger island, but it should be similar. We've been having a pretty exceptional summer this year. It's been warm and dry... (unlike the past 2 years, when I never even got tan lines, because it wasn't ever warm enough to take the knee and arm warmers off....) I do have to warn you, even though it was shorts weather at my house yesterday. It was very windy and a bit nippy out on the island. I was fine cycling in my shorts and short sleeves, but on my way home I could have used long pants and a jacket outside of the car, so pack some chilly weather gear too (and it nearly always cools off considerably at night around here).

OK, what is going on with the file attachments? Everytime I upload something I get a big red symbol next to the file number, and I can't drag it into the bottom part.
I've never had any issues before.
2 thoughts - the file sizes may be too big for direct uploads or you may have reached the your limit on files stored on the server? (assuming you are uploading and not hot linking).

OK, I deleted all the images stored. NowI cannot figureout why my pics always appear as thumbnails. DH and I searched everywhere to find a place to change this. I remember changing the size of my attachments a long time ago, before the forum format changed. The new thing just feels very non-intuitive, if that is even a word!

There is a bike path that's mostly on the beach here. I use it in the mornings at times to wake up on and sometimes to have an early breakfast with a friend in Manhattan Beach. Sometimes to de-stress after work. This ride is 12 miles south on the beach path to some residential climbing in Palos Verdes. 40 to 50+ miles depending on how much climbing I want to do

This year's adventure was a supported tour (as in, my husband drove our stuff from place to place, then rode out to meet us on the trail) in upstate New York. We started in Fairport and rode along the Erie Canal to Brockport on day 1; then took a combination of counrty roads, bike paths and the Erie Canal to Grand Island on day 2; on day 3, we rode to Niagara Falls and did all the touristy things; day 4 took us up into Canada to St. Catherine's along the Welland Canal; day 5 was back to the US over the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge for a stop at Ft. Niagara; and then along Lake Ontario to Hamlin Beach State Park on day 6; day 7 was suppose to be ride back to Fairport, but it was pouring, so we wimped out :-( and took to sag wagon back to the cars.

Ah, now I can. I opened thus thread yesterday on my work computer, on which I often can't see photos. Beautiful shots!
You reminded me that I really need to edit my signature to more clearly reflect that "Mary Anne" is the writer to whom I've attributed the quotation in my signature. You're not the first to think my name is Mary Anne.

Did you do the ride up the "hill" on Orcas?
We wimped out on that last summer! Took a great hike at the English Camp, instead, which rewarded us with awesome views.
The San Juans are beautiful, but it was my first experience with chip seal. I was not amused!

Indysteel, and I was thinking how great to have Mary Anne Radmacher as a forum member :)
Maybe just put quote marks around that great quote?……I wish I had even a small percentage of Pema's or Mary Anne's wisdom!!
Crankin, I did ride up Mount Constitution. One of the best and hardest climbs I've done! Very cloudy day so the view at the top wasn't all that great which was a disappointment. Orcas seemed like it was either a crazy steep pitch climb or descent through my entire ride on the island though. I think Lopez was my favorite ride. Quieter than San Juan or Orcas and a really nice alt-culture, organic, artistic vibe with a really good restaurant. (Vita's) I'd go back in a heartbeat to any of the three though. I was thinking of maybe adding Vancouver Island to a future ride.
aponi, the outer banks is one of my favorite places. Thanks for taking me there again! Great spider image!!!!!

The last double century that I’ve been training for this year is coming up soon. This has been my year of challenging training rides. One of the reason’s I’ve photographed my routes is that I’ve used thinking about photography as one of my mental tricks on hard climbs or just long rides, using a second ride for getting the photos. So my ride reports on this site and another helped that and my creativity! Back to my basic routes and shorter rides after the Solvang Autumn double…so this is probably my last ride report as I've already shown my basic routes.
On our way back home from Washington State on 101/1 we took a couple of days off from driving to ride sections of the Oregon coast and a Redwood scenic side road that was just incredible with the trees, light, foliage and solitude…..and I saw a dinosaur!!! :)
THANKS Devold for starting this thread and helping me get up some steep grades :D

Now why didn't I already think of that? Duh! :) Thanks for the suggestion!
Did the Mt. Baker Hillclimb yesterday - for various reasons (unpleasant store owner in town, being one of the largest....) it was not possible for it to be a race this year - no closed road and no timing, so I took and threw my camera in my pocket and boy oh boy was it a beautiful day too

Absolutely gorgeous, Eden! How lucky you are to be able to ride there.
Thanks for sharing!
I don't think it's ever, in all the years we've gone, been as nice as it was yesterday. Usually even if it is nice at the bottom, it's cold and foggy or cloudy at the top. It was a superb year to be able to sit up and enjoy the view!
