View Full Version : Anyone know anything about car insurance?

My son goes to college out of state in Kentucky. We live in Texas. For his first 3 years he did not have a car at school. This fall he wants to take his car back to school (it's his, but I hold the title for now.) His driver's license and all his school's mail comes to his Texas address.

I called the car insurance people and they informed me that they could not insure the car unless he registered it in Kentucky and changed his address and driver's license to Kentucky. That makes no sense to me. Come next May he will be coming home to Texas and it costs about $500 to register that car in Texas. I can't believe I'm the only parent to send their kid out of state and have the kid take a family car without changing the registration.

Thoughts/experiences?

Nope, you're not. They have policies written for just this purpose. We once looked into registering our son's car in AZ during the year he went to U of A, and while we would have been happy to change the registration, etc (it was totally in his name, anyway, so we could never get sued), it was 5X the cost as insuring it here.
Call around to different insurance companies and ask.

Thanks Crankin! They did tell me to call one of the "big" insurance companies and I asked, "Aren't y'all owned by Allstate?" To which she replied, "yes." I just rolled my eyes. I guess I'll be calling around.

Right now the policy is under my partner's name because she owns the house and we get a bigger discount that way, so we'll see how that goes.
