another reason to wear your helmet

Hey ladies,

A bunch of guys from Perth that we know get together to ride on thurs nights and do some mtn biking. Last night one of them had a major stack & without his helmet he would probably be in worse shape....

OW. That looks painful. I've read that correct helmet use prevents 80% of traumatic head injury.

In the old days (of skid lids and such) I used to ride without a helmet all the time... no more. Have landed on my poor head one too many times and even with a helmet, I still sustained a pretty bad permanent head injury. Geez, I cracked my head a month ago cleaning the kitchen floor and now ponder if I should wear my helmet indoors... dorky huh???? :rolleyes:

Well I won't be cleaning the floor anytime soon. I ended up in the hospital. Worse thing was I cracked my tailbone. Now that's a painful injury!!!!

Yikes that does sound painful. Yep I would stay away from that floor.
Are you fully recovered now? How long does it take to recover from that sort of injury?

A helmet sometimes prevents head trauma and sometimes doesn't. In my case it didn't prevent trauma (probably pretty hard to do when I landed directly on my head...) but it did save my life. I have everything I can do not to stop and encourage people to wear helmets when I see bare-headed people on bikes. Unfortunately since there is no way to predict how someone will react, I usually keep my opinion to myself when faced with helmet-less strangers.

I broke my ankle walking across the kitchen floor, just slipped and *snap*. Boy, those kitchen floors are dangerous. Let's stay out of 'em ;)

Lise, I read that 80% figure too, yet so many don't wear a "brain bucket" or wear it correctly.

Having recently fallen off my bike and been saved by my helmet, I firmly suggest everyone wear a good fitting helmet on every ride. You may still get banged up, but at least you can look forward to another day in the saddle.
