well, not my road bike, but a rented one in Hawaii where we went for business trip that my husband had. As some of you followed my shoulder fracture accident on Labor Day my first ride back was on the Big Island of Hawaii. Even with the mild winter, I just could not get back on my bike at home. I guess call it mind over matter, but it was easier getting on the bike in 80 degree weather. I will admit to having a major stomach ache the whole drive to Kona where we were renting our bikes. They had Specialized which is what we ride, but no Dolce for me. I ride a 51cm Dolce and the Allez 50cm fit me just fine. I did not bring my pedals although my husband did. I thought best since I did not know how familiar I would be with the bike they gave me, I had better use regular pedals. I also had them put the seat a little lower than I usually have it.

I road once around the parking lot and thought, so far so good then we walked the bikes up a hill to the road that they use for the Kona Ironman Triatholon. Oh my, my, why can't all roadways be like this. It was beautifully paved and smooth. I got right back into the groove. There was a 40mph gusts of cross/head wind going but coming back was not so bad. We put in 20 miles which was ok. I know if it wasn't for that wind I could have done 50 easy.

I know I sound like a broken record, but my shoulder is still not 100% but I see a little more improvement at weeks go by with my continuous stretching and some weight exercises.

I am so happy to get over that first hurdle. I know I will be fine on my bike with the clips on. I just thought that I would share this with you as so many of you were so kind and offered so many wonderful words of support to me. I am ready for spring and will try for my first century in May. I know if during the course if I don't feel up to the full distance, I will take the lesser mile route and not feel at all bad about it. That is the plan for both my girlfriend and I. There are two others that we will ride during the year which will also include my husband, my brother and his girlfriend so that is something for us all to look forward to.

Once again thank you for all your kind words over the course of the last few months.

~ JoAnn

JoAnn -
That's wonderful news - back on your bike and on the Big Island too!

And I agree that it's much easier to convince yourself to get on a bike in Hawaii than it is during our current cold snap.

JoAnn, I'm really impressed that you could jump back on a bike after the shoulder accident and do 20 miles right off the bat. After my broken collarbone, I had to practice leaning on my arms on a piano bench before I dare put weight on my arm on a bike. Then I started with 1-2 mile rides. So congrats on that ride. I'm happy for you.

Hi Deb, this really isn't too soon. I fell on Labor Day, Sept 5th, so it is 6 months. It wasn't until November that I was able begin holding on to my handlebars on the trainer beginning with putting my weight on my shoulders for short amount of time and increasing the time as I felt better. But I always pedaled for at least 30 minutes to keep my legs strong. I hope you are doing better. If I remember correctly, your injury happened last spring. Your story was my consolation that I will get better, but all in due time. Please feel free to keep me updated as to your progress.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. It is nice to post about a cycling adventure instead of my injury.

Lucky you to be in Hawaii! I love that place - wish I could figure out how to live there. I could picture just where you were riding too. Happy to hear you got back on the road. :)

Jo - Reading your note made me smile! What a wonderful place to take your first post-injury ride---HAWAII!! You sound like you did great.
It took me a long time to recover fully from a broken shoulder, so be patient. You will get your strength and mobility back. Even though my ortho never put me in PT (a huge mistake), my shoulder is 100% thanks to my own efforts. Incorporating rotator cuff work into my weight lifting routine really has made the difference, as has stretching.

Good for you! Overcoming the fear is at least as much work as healing the shoulder. I'm very happy for you :D Lise
